Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: The Power of Courage and Creativity | Aramis Hamer | TEDxUofW

Aramis describes her path to becoming a visual artist and muralist, and the lessons she learned about imposter syndrome. Aramis O. Hamer is a visual artist and muralist in Seattle, WA. Her large-scale, acrylic paintings are inspired by the cosmos, music, nature, divine femininity, and the complexities in Black culture. Aramis has exhibited her colorful creations throughout Washington state. She also painted the “V” in Seattle’s Black Lives Matter mural. This self taught, Neddy Award winning artist lets her imagination be her guide.

Holy moly, ARAMIS!!!! This was so beautifully said and I already knew a lot of your story, but that part about cross pollinating the field of collective consciousness? Chills, baby. I have CHILLS. You always have such a way with words...can we expect a book of poems or an autobiography in the future because you are a gifted writer and speaker (I mean not like we didn't know that already) I am literally doing a quick research refresher this morning on Imposter Syndrome today because I'm making a video talking about it and getting ready to do a voiceover soon. I'm clicking on all the ted talks and had no idea one of them was gonna be YOURS. I completely forgot that you did a TED Talk at all and was so damn delighted to see your beautiful face and listen to your story. And I am most definitely going to be linking to this video for folks to get more information. And I look forward to your videos to come, I know you're on a little vacay from YT, so enjoy that time off! 😉

I was listening to a podcast and Andre 3000 spoke on how he felt stuck creatively and frozen by the fear of judgment of others. When I felt stuck I started my youtube channel so that I'd be motivated to complete the activities that I was too depressed to do. Discipline creates stability and all that. I record myself studying/journaling because even if I’m not doing anything at my desk, I at least turn up everyday because I 100% wont do anything if I’m not even showing up.

I can relate to the impostor syndrome. I have some talents and feel stuck using them in the real world. I won't be good enough.

Your energy and wisdom are stunning, you are a leader, and your words inspired me so profoundly. As an artist, I can assure you that you gave me the courage I needed to keep going and share my authenticity and art with the world, even if I shake while doing it, I will always be the change I want to see in the world.
