Overcoming food addiction, losing weight + finding the me I was meant to be | 3 year update

#weightloss #foodaddiction #healthylifestyle
How much weight have you lost? What does recovery mean? How do you do it? I couldn't ever give up those foods. These are things I hear frequently. In this 3 year abstinence anniversary update, I address some of these questions and talk about what these past 3 years have actually been like for me.
May 8, 2017 I started on a path that I honestly had no idea where it would lead. I hoped it would lead me to shedding the unhealthy pounds of weight I had accumulated on my body (and it did! I've lost over 100 pounds and maintained that weight loss), but what my life has looked like over these past 3 years is something I never could have imagined.
The Biggest Loser, Jenny Craig, 80/20, I had tried all the diet programs out there and nothing ever worked. Until I chose to stop white-knuckling it and actually surrender my control to God. To live His way and not mine when it came to food. It was sooo hard to admit that I couldn't do it on my own and so frustrating that I couldn't have it all- the cake, the cookies, the chips AND the weight loss :/ Funny, but true.
When I finally came to the point of realizing that it wasn't really about the food, but it was about my desire to retain CONTROL over the foods that I ate, everything changed! Truly living in a way that says God, I'm going to let you reign in my life, even in the areas I think don't matter much to you. We can want to keep the "not so important" areas in our control, but God wants us to surrender everything. We can't live our way and His way at the same time, it just doesn't work.
Choosing to no longer eat sugar or flour was a MASSIVE lifestyle change for me. It's like keto, but not. Haha...but for real! Trying to order at a restaurant is sometimes impossible. But would I do this 1000 times over again. Absolutely yes! I am so much happier. Experience my relationship with Jesus so much more deeply and fully. And am no longer ashamed by not only my body, but my choices and habits when it comes to food. No longer sneaking around, hiding food wrappers or eating from sunup to sundown.
It can be hard to come to the point of saying- I know what I need to do but I just don't want to. We stomp our feet and pray for God to give us an answer, when we know full well he already has. I'm gonna drop some truth bombs in this video because I think there are probably people who need to hear them. Stop allowing yourself to find excuse after excuse to be disobedient. Put down the food and walk in the fullness of what God has for you!

I am so happy for you and so proud of you for losing the weight. The best part to me is that you gained control while you were still young! I have struggled all my adult life. I am in my 60s and a lot of days I feel like it's just not possible for me to gain control over the food and sugar. I hope I can learn something from you. In the meantime please pray for me.😢

Amen to that! I truly believe the Lord brings revelation at the right time. He knows where we are in our journey/process and is gracious in that. As hard as it can be to admit it, once we have awareness, we then have a responsibility to take steps toward wholeness. A wholeness and freedom that only HE can bring. -Matina (Adventuring with Jesus)

I didn't struggle much with relapses but I also gave myself really strict boundaries at the beginning. No substituting or trying to find things that were like what I used to eat but "ok." For me the step easy food plan with FOF worked though I didn't do as many veggies (because that was hard for me...did salads and v8 to help with that). What are you finding most challenging about it? Feel free to email me also if you'd like to chat more- info@matinahawkins.com

When I find it the most challenging is when I'm experiencing lack of sleep. For me it's unmanageable. I eat everything in sight. If I had a regular schedule/same work shift everyday it would be a lot easier (I guess)

I typically eat eggs, oatmeal and fruit for breakfast and lunch/dinner are protein (chicken, beef and ground turkey are my go-tos), potato or rice and veggies/salad. I have a couple of "go-to" recipes that are pretty quick and also some crockpot ones too which are helpful when I don't feel like really cooking. I do not eat anything with sugar, sweeteners or any type of flour (so not just gluten free, but nothing made with a flour based product - breads, pastas etc). Happy to share more specifics if you'd like - you can email me or DM me on IG. - Matina

Hi Melody- I'm actually going to be doing a video soon on sort of FAQ's and a lot more of the specifics of my meal plan will be in there. Basically- meat, rice, potatoes, fruits, veggies are what I eat. And yes- for me it's no flours at all- almond, corn, coconut etc. It's less about the "gluten" aspect and more of how quickly anything that's made into a flour is processed in the bloodstream. -Matina
