Overcoming excuses - people sketching - episode 2

In this video I demonstrate coloring a sketch from start to finish. I also talk about dealing with artist excuses, and what we can do about it.

"What we have is based upon moment-to-moment choices of what we do. In each of those moments, we choose. We either take a risk and move toward what we want, or we play it safe and choose comfort. Most of the people, most of the time, choose comfort. In the end, people either have excuses or experiences; reasons or results; buts or brilliance. They either have what they wanted or they have a detailed list of all the rational reasons why not."

Your words are so inspiring, it's just what I need to get my lazy ass off and start writing again. I may not be an artist, but everything you said applied to any aspiring person. I'm finally motivated to start working towards my goal of being a writer. No excuses. Thank you for this. Your drawing is beautiful too!

I just found these videos in a time in my life when things are rather rocky with my health and spirits are low. Not only were these inspiring to me as an artist, but you've rejuvenated something inside of me about being happy about my work and encouraging myself that I haven't felt since I was a child beginning art for the first time. Thanks bud, tonight was memorable :) I don't even know you and your encouragement truly touched me. If I could give you a big ole bear hug I would /manbrace

This video is seriously amazing. I always find myself thinking "gosh I wish I could do this, or I wish I could do that..." and when I try and it doesn't come along well I get discouraged and stop drawing. I learned a lot from this video and it makes me just want to step back and enjoy myself again like I did in the beginning. I also love how you said when you try to make something nice no one notices, but when you don't try and have fun people notice. It happens to me al the time, and I even learned from that, that when you draw because it's something you like to do it shows. When you try to hard it doesn't have the same feel or aura that the other has. Thank you so much for this video. I will keep everything in my heart and mind from now on!

When you say a physical excuse is not having enough money, that troubles me. I don't have a lot of money but I can still buy basic supplies and try. I feel like if you can master crappy products you can do amazing things when you have the money to get better supplies and mediums. It is a lowly excuse for not doing art which I can relate to. I agree they are valid excuses, but still excuses. I've also found recently that my mistakes are helpful and not a reason to get stuck, and I feel like its a huge relief to me when it comes to art. Also super into the white highlights, so fun! Great video, thanks for sharing! You are so insightful and I am really enjoying your videos.

As an artist feeling down about not having the time... I finally heard what i needed to hear. No Excuses! Will, I stumbled onto your KZread videos while watching a review about a pen I was considering on buying... I was FLOORED by you ability to be so positive. I'm usually the positive one but as of late I felt myself sinking into a depressive art slump... then I heard your uplifting words. I actually got goosebumps... thank you...for helping me reboot.

I think this is because everybody assumes artists just happen to have these magical visions and they just vomit them beautifully without any hardship, planning, rational thinking, composing, trial error etc.

I would like to thank you for this video! It is very inspirational and the way you talked about how important it is not to quit and not to be afraid helped me a lot. I was doodling something in my sketchbook when you started to talk about "what you focus on is going to expand" and about excuses. I immediately stopped and had to write it down. I even wrote NO EXCUSES! at the hard cover of my sketch book because I always have problems with that - especially with comparing myself with experienced artists. So I want to thank you for this because you talk about things that I always struggle with and that are important to overcome. It helped me a lot!

You give me hope, not only in drawing bit also in my everyday life. I can do anything if I take my time and let myself make mistake, and change and fix those mistakes until I like them and learn from those mistakes.

Will, these videos always seem to hit so close to home. As silly as it sounds, knowing that professional artists and artists that have more experience than I do have the same problems that I face does so much to push me to work every day at becoming better. You probably hear this often on these comments, I just really wanted to thank you for being able to share all of this without being condescending or intimidating, which I feel a lot of other art teachers can be. Thanks for everything, and please keep doing what you're doing. It really makes more of a difference in the lives of people than I imagine you could expect.
