How to deal with stress - people sketching - episode 4

In this video, I talk about how to deal with stress, and how to meet deadlines. After 15 years of making comic books, and doing freelance illustration, I have run into a LOT of stressful situations. In this video I share some of the tools I've learned to overcome those obstacles.
Below are Amazon affiliate links for some of the supplies I use in these videos.
Feel free to use the links if you're interested in supporting me with your purchase:
The type of sketchbook I use is the Earthbound Cachet sketchbook, available here:

The white pen I use is a White Gelly Roller Gel pen available at most arts and crafts stores, or on Amazon...
amzn.to/2ng3tLW
Red/Blue Colored pencil from Prismacolor :

I've made two videos talking about the types of drawing supplies I use: • Video
And another demonstrating them:

Just watched this video, and it reminded me of a quote from my favorite author, Lois McMaster Bujold: "I've always thought tests are a gift. And great tests are a great gift. To fail a test is a misfortune. But to refuse the test is to refuse the gift, and something worse, more irrevocable, than misfortune."

Hi Id just like to say THANK YOU!,I am a visual arts major in high school but I plan on going into nursing, your videos have encouraged me to continue doing what I love, and to not fall victim to excuses. This year at the end of mt senior year I literally planned on burning all of my art work (which is actually exceptionally good according to others) and giving away my art supplies. I figured I wouldn't have time for art. Like I said before you have inspired me and maybe even perhaps saved my life, I enjoy your videos and i thank you for sharing your wisdom. I can really relate to you

Your rambling is amazing advice for tons of authors (and humans) out there. I know I'm getting a lot out of these - and I just came here to learn how to draw better! :) I found you from when you did a video with Jazza, Mary Doodles, and Cartoon Block. I loved hearing you talk about stress, I used to stress over the little things In life, and in my art work. Recently in the past 6 months I have been having seizures and a good friend of my mine was witness to one of them and we got to talking about what had happed that day, that day I lost my stepdad and just got back from the funeral and was stressing over whats going on in my brothers mind he is so young, and he looked at me with a big smile and a hard laugh saying he has solved my problems, DONT STRESS. I laughed at it but it was true, all my episodes happened under stress. So listening to you makes me happy, and help understand the things up ahead for me on my journey to be a artist.

Human things we all deal with. Maybe the stress is real or imagined for me but watching you draw and just talk calms me down. Grounds my thoughts for a bit. Thank you so much for these videos. I always seem to find the right video at the right time, and they always help me immensely. I think someone else said it before me; every time I re-watch these, I get something new out of it. In regards to the growth vs stagnation you mentioned, I had it explained to me like this: you reap what you sow. If you plant seeds, you get fruit. Or veggies, or whatever. If you don't do anything...you get weeds. You're either growing or decaying. And watching this video brought that back for me (as well as a bunch of other stuff about dealing with stress) at a time when I really needed it. So thank you. :) And this concept is really funny, by the way. Love it. :)

First off, I love your work, it's amazing stuff. Secondly, I've seen a few of your videos and I love them. I like how you take a video of your drawings, yet you barely talk about them. Instead of a play by play of your work you fill the time with sage advice. This is something I rarely come by, and I really appreciate it. I've been going through some stuff of my own, and It's really inspiring to hear someone elses accounts that are similar to mine. And, to get some input on how another person may have handled it, and advice on how to overcome myself. Again, thank you, and keep making awesome work and awesome videos.

How come whenever i watch any of your videos it relates to my life right now? I am in junior high (8th grade) and I have to write a 35000 word novel in one month. I am only 58% done right now and i am really freaking out (because it is almost the end of November). I am a really stubborn person and have the biggest ego in the world. I get really stressed really easily about really simple things (like turning in a math packet). And i have the tendency (more like all the time) to make everything i do perfect (which everything cant be perfect). And i have a really hard time not looking at my classmates work and thinking: "They have way more words than me, i am horrible at this, and i am never going to get this done in time." I started to cry a lot while I was watching your video. Not because it was bad, but because it was what i wanted to hear. I needed someone to tell me that you can only do the best that you can do now. You can look at it and try and fix the errors in the next one, but that you don't need to stress so much about it that you never get it done. I cant compare myself to other people because, there will always be someone better than me, i can never change that. I am not supposed to make the book print ready by the end of this month (i am only supposed to meet the quota, we will edit later), but i feel if I am to show it to someone for them to review that it needs to be perfect. Maybe i don't want people to look down on me because it isn't the best novel (this is my FIRST novel so it shouldn't). But i so desperately want it to be. Thank you so much for making this video, I am now trying to regain my composure and start typing at the novel even if it is not very good, i can always learn from it. Sorry, I am trying to hold back tears. Thank you so much..... I guess you could say that you saved me.... thank you....

Love your videos and your laugh. :-) Your people sketching videos mixed with helpful topics are great! They make you think and show you that you are not the only person thinking about or dealing with certain things. I enjoyed many parts of this video, but wanted to mention the part abouut getting the sketch our of your head. You were not totally pleased with your sketch, but at least you tried it and completed it. And, like you mentioned, might go back to it later, but at least you got it out of your head. That is a motivational idea to me so that I can finally get ideas on paper, even if I don't like the end result. At least I am getting better (hopefully :-) ) and getting closer to those 10,000+ hours. :-) Thank you, again, for sharing.

Hey Will Terrell, thank you so much for talking about stress, struggle, and failures as an artist. I too went through a time where I gave up on drawing for a bit, because of stress, caring too much of what others would think, and a death in the family. Podcasts and videos everywhere rarely mention this topic (failures and struggles), and it felt very lonely as I was surrounded by steven silvers and glen keanes. So I ended up causing my own... i think it could be referred to as a self-caused creative paralysis? I wish I had this video a few years back, but now finally I am where I want to be starting off in the industry. It is lovely to hear about how you overcame it all. I hope you keep making videos and I love your work. Your designs are charismatic and hilarious.

Great advice! And it came at a great point in my life. I'm currently stressing over these two paintings that I'm donating to a charity that raises money for autism awareness, but even though I've got the pieces about 88% done, I'm stressing over the fact that they're not perfect. And I keep telling myself "let me just fix this, then I'll turn it in". Tomorrow morning I'm sealing them, signing them and turning them I'm!

I really liked this video. you said some things I think allot of people need to hear in regards to overcoming fear, be it in art or in life. Just wanted to drop you a quick note of encouragement, people are watching and listening to what you have to say. Thanks for putting yourself out there buddy!
