    I definitely would’ve went with more composite materials to build this rig, can’t imagine how much this thing weighs and not even having any interior done.

  • @brianswanigan9891
    @brianswanigan98916 ай бұрын

    Sorry to say Chris but the biggest mistake you have made so far is that you didn’t upgrade the suspension in the back because of the use of steel instead of aluminum. With what you have right now is probably pushing the weight limits before you start putting in cabinets, storage, refrigeration unit, heating and cooling systems, water storage, waste storage, wiring and plumbing, windows, doors, and there still is things like cushions and beds, etc. To fix it now you will need to remove the shell RIGHT NOW before it gets too heavy to lift. Before you ask how do I know? 20 years experience of building recreational vehicles just like you are doing. Oh, you also might want to check on the center of gravity and make sure that it’s not too heavy, you’ll have a tipping problem. Not trying to rain on your parade, just wanting you and the gang to be safe.

    I should have waited until the end to comment, you need to stop now!! The truck is already starting to squat down because of the weight. Please rethink the design. There needs to be six inches of clearance AFTER you put the interior in the camping shell, how much do you have right now? I’m sorry but your project looks like it is now becoming a little dangerous.

    @@brianswanigan9891 They haven't listened to reason on anything. It will get used once and parked like everything else. The boat still needs about 4k pounds of ballast to sit right in the water and I doubt that will ever happen.

    @@BlueDually4x4 I know, and it’s scaring the crap out of me. When we would work on trucks like this we would avoid the Dodge Rams because of their frame using a C-channel style. Even when I had to install a 5th wheel hitch on a Dodge I would collapse the frame and we would have to spread it back out and reinforce the frame. So we would use Fords, and something of this weight should be on a F450 at the minimum. I checked the weight limit on the Ram and it’s 5-7k. He’s hitting that with the camper shell along. I just hope nothing fatal happens.

    I once made a small charge pipe from stainless steel cause I didn’t have a welder for aluminum. I thought that was ghetto and was ashamed of it. I painted it to hide it. This was like 15 years ago when I was only 20. But this is next level ghetto. This thing is gonna weigh 15k lbs and be super top heavy. Ambition strikes built an aluminum shell on a newer 3500 and were within like 100 lbs of the “legal” gvwr. They said it handled like garbage until they did some suspension work. This thing isn’t doomed for failure, it IS a failure.

    If you add heat/ac to this box; I advise ducting your heat to come out of floor vents and the ac from the roof mount/or vents. That way the heat rises all the way through the box and the ac falls all throughout the camper. Love the series and I can't wait to see it finished. Also I'm very excited for the door, can't wait to see how it works!

    Chris, mount these boxes with bolts. You will be able to remove them if it is needed. Also, in these gaps between you will accumulate a lot of mud and dust from the road, and that will rust. So I think it is better to have them removable.

    I remember you mentioning earlier on in this build that you’ll be getting a bunch of lead acid batteries to use with a power inverter. Just wanted to throw out a quick suggestion that you go the lithium (LiFePO4) route instead; the energy density is far better, they weigh significantly less, have a longer life, and are just generally way less finicky/tempermental. Renology is a fairly popular brand, but I personally went a cheaper route and went with ampere time (I think they changed their name to li-time). Then I found a charger-inverter, which when plugged into shore power will automatically charge the batteries, then when on battery-only it switches to inverter mode. I also added another DC-DC lithium charger for when we’re on the road, so the tow vehicle can charge the batteries too.

    Should have filled it with tin / brass like the old days :P Plumber's solder just tap it into the gaps and go to town with a heat gun. The work on those storage boxes really shows off the skill you guys have perfectly. For the Porsche just buy some knock off software from China. Not sure if VCDS will do it since its basically VAG you might be able to put a module into say a VW and code it, then put back into your car (they do that here to code radios, ABS pumps and stuff with VW golfs and the gateway model, you provide the code you want for module, and they pre-program it with VCDS by connecting it to another car and send it back.). You can also find a decent electrical repair dude to unsolder the chips containing serials and place them into the working modules.
