Overcome Overwhelm and Get Stuff Done!

Let's talk about overcoming feeling so overwhelmed, we don't know where to start.
When I feel overwhelmed by my never-ending to-do list (or life in general) I tend to "ostrich" - aka avoiding and procrastinating.
So how do we overcome those feelings and actually get stuff done? It's all about embracing GETMO (Good Enough To Move On)!

I’ve learned that often the time I spend procrastinating is actually longer than the time it would have taken to do/finish the chore. I should also mention that I try to frame the word “chore” into “Accomplishment.” As in “What would I like to accomplish today?’ VS “How many chores are there to do?” Cleaning a bathroom is a chore. A clean bathroom is an accomplishment.

Before yesterday, I didn't think making a list was nesserary for me. Until I had company and they looked in a very dirty bathroom mirror that I forgot to clean. It was dirty after using tons of hair products that I used trying to control my long hair and then brushing it. Then, without me noticing, it would fling onto the mirror. The mirror was last cleaned four days before this happened.

Cass, I just had this epiphany this week, for getting my business setup! I'm an interior designer, and want all my handouts branded perfectly, and realized I'm wasting time. No one else cares about the exact font size or tint of blue i'm using. I can always go back if I need to, but I NEED TO MOVE ON :)

This GETMO concept is so freeing! Thank you! Doing things "good enough " requires that I kick my mom & grandma out of my head because my brain is trying to tell me that I'm not doing it "right" because I'm not doing it the way they taught me. Excellent video!

Cas, my fridge is STILL clean and organized 2 weeks later. And my silverware drawer, and got rid of half my utentils. Plus, I did reorganize my lingerie drawers and have kept my bed made up. Yesterday I had a nurse visit. It only took me 30 minutes to tidy my dining room so we could sit at the table and plan. Im able to find things faster. More motivation to keep going! The All Day DeClutter was transformative on so many levels. I realize the role trauma played in my life now 😢 but moving on is critical to my recovery. God is revealing me to..myself! "Getmo" is such a brilliant (and catchy) motto. I will keep on telling me this. Deep down I'm a perfectionalist (you wouldn't think so when looking at my household). So, since it's basically all a mess, and I'm overwhelmed, don't know where to start and already know I won't manage to do it all, I don't start in the first place. My husband keeps on telling me "just start SOMEWHERE, and don't attempt to do it perfectly, there's no need to." He doesn't understand my way of thinking (and feeling - I get so anxious, all the stuff drives me crazy, makes me feel bad about myself and somehow paralizes me), and I know he's right, but it's still hard not to do it perfectly. I will keep on telling me "getmo" all day long from now on. By the way: I love your top!

A to do list for me is never more than 3 things. When that’s done, I make another to do list. I have all the things I have to do in my head, but I never write down more than three at a time. That way I get “woohooo I did it” several times a day instead of “I’m a loser didn’t even get my things done today”.

A couple of months ago my husband and I went on a cruise for our 20th anniversary. Which sounds like a fabulous vacation. But with 6 kids and school in session, we had to have my parents and in-laws come stay in our home (take turns) while we were gone. They used our bedroom and bathroom. I was soooo stressed getting my house ready for guests to stay without me there to help. And all the details required to leave my kids for a week. 😱😱😱 I almost backed out of my trip. Thankfully we went and everyone survived. But I wish I had been able to prioritize the things that really needed to get done.

You show what REAL life is and that honesty encourages me to get moving and to have more confidence that progress will happen. And when you said it was 3:00, I felt my own panic start to rise for you, but instead of you trying to stay up all night to do more, you approached the situation with "what do I do now and without perfectionism intruding" rather than beating yourself up for needing to stop all morning and hide out to deal with having way too much to do. Now when I haven't done any of my plans during the day, I will think of you and know that I can start things later in the day rather than quitting for the rest of the day, too, because nothing much has been accomplished. THANKS!

I'm a mom, and 2 of my 4 of my kids are married. Both my daughter in law's work and they have children both familie. There is one family that we use to help out monthly watching my grandkids. The laundry wasn't always done, and there were areas that went dusted. But you know what I felt when I was there it, It was a houseful of love they were being amazing parents and busy activities. What I would do while I was there is I would do their laundry. I felt like I was loving and blessing their home. My daughter in law is short. My son is tall. I would go round and dust the little things that they didn't get done through ceiling fans. Blades may be some of the vents at times. But I did it with no judgment. I just LOVE. No, my son would say mom, you don't need to do the laundry we didn't. Have you come to work, I would always say I know. I figured when the kids were doing their things by themselves that they wanted to do for those few moments, I could be that blessing. Sometimes I would say to the kids, should we surprise your parents should we do something fun. They thought mundane things were fun just because grandma was there. Now this wasn't an all the time thing we went there monthly because because the parents at that time had to work the same weekend. But I will tell you it was so much fun, Honestly I love cleaning someone else's house. It's always more fun to do someone else's house than your own. I have been like this since I was a young child, I can remember cleaning the farm stove of my grandparents' farm. Her kitchen stove did lots of cooking, but this particular grandma wasn't the tidiest, so I would help. I would sit there with a rag and just. Wipe things down. One day when you get older which I hope isn't for a whole lot of years, You will understand when you go to your children's home. I agree about the part of changing the sheets. Before my one family member, before they got their robot vacuum cleaner, they have 2 dogs. They love their animals, but I also knew how much my daughter in law didn't like the dog hair, but she was busy, Her hours and so they could both be there for their children. They were creative in their working schedule. Because it wasn't my normal and it was fun, I went around and did all those little areas cleaning the dog hair. And yes, they noticed, and they would say mom don't do that, I would tell them you can tell me don't, but i'm still gonna do it just to bless you. So that's what I think many times us as parents We love to be a blessing. Did I snoop in everything no.. But I did get to love my family. I got to spend time with them and I got to bless. I hope you have a fantastic time away with your husband at your meeting. I also hope your parents have a fantastic time with your children. Cass I am part of the take your house back course and I just want to say huge thank you. I hope your parents realize how much of a blessing in your energy you pour out to others. I can tell you I've gotten rid of a lot of things sentisend a memo. I've also look at different things at taking care of me better. I'm a mom of four chiturn plus bonus five grandchildren plus bonus. Sometimes we're so busy pouring out we forget to take care of us. Big hugs are much love to you.❤ The body doubling helps me plus everything you are saying..it's amazing!!

I intensely relate to you as a late ADHD woman and am endlessly thankful for the stepping stones your content is laying for me. I really needed this today. I have just finished my year as a preschool assistant teacher while I have doubled up my classes for my Early Childhood Education degree so that I can student teach in the fall! Not to mention that I have been asked to sub in other classrooms and my youngest son graduated from high school! I have felt pressure (in the past) from family members (not my own family) that my house needed to be perfect all of the time! I have since begun to realize that I do it GETMO! We had started to declutter when we were supposed to move in April, but the house fell through, and I just haven't had the brain power and energy to do more. We are hosting my son's graduation party and we as a family need to work together to clean it up. Laundry has been a major fight and issue for a LONG time! Just paying the bills feels like a chore. We have been working on the dishes as a starting place and I will be taking notes on your Kitchen Path. I love listening to you and Dawn. Baby steps and I will get there. Thank you!!!!

We have free standing food pantries. Food is acceptable past best buy date if sealed (non perishable). When I assess my kitchen and pantry, I try and take note of what isn’t/hasn’t been used to take and pass along to someone else. It helps with the “I don’t want it to go to waste” hang up. Other things that need to get used up, I set out so I can use them during the upcoming week (meal plan around items).

This is the part that made me cry. After working together in the kitchen my daughter went into the baby room where this room has remained the same for two years. She miscarried and had to bury a tiny little baby girl named Alizabella. For the first time she packed up everything in bins that would have been used for the baby and put them in the garage. I am so proud of her for facing this hurt head on and doing it. I have tears in my eyes thinking about how brave she is!

Ok, after listening to 5 things NOT to do while organizing I threw out a tonne of stuff - not to have to organize my clutter. Still enough to be thrown away, left, but for now it was good enough, went through three drawers in my living room cupboard and a drawer full of candles and candle holders which I will never use again. And I finally threw away my tapes. Luckily I already had done my dishes ... While listening to this episode, I paused it and took my vacuum for a tour through the apartment and put on a washing machine. Started folding the laundry away from the drying rack. Now I deserve a few more minutes of listening, before I get that done (have to, as the washing machine will be done in 2 hours).

I LOVE listening to you while I clean or exercise! I just cleaned put my multi function air fryer oven while listening to this. After a few months of using The Organised Mum Method on what to work and when, and listening to you on organizing, my house is transforming from one giant mess to a home I can live in and function in. I like your motto GOTMO. I will use that. I still have mega lists....because otherwise I get scattered-brained. I've come to recognize that in organizing my things, I'm a Butterfly/Lady Bug hybrid. But in my list and schedule-making, I'm a Bumble Bee/Cricket hybrid. I have a calendar and notebook for schedules and lists that I don't currently need for the week. But then, I have white boards and a bulletin board that I can easily write out what to focus on that day, and right now...and I can erase them and change things up as needed. And, I use a timer for the main jobs...I tried to simplify those lists and it just kept me over-thinking and overwhelmed throughout my day. But when I thought back on your video about people whose homes you transformed who represent each of ghe organised styles, I realized that I'm a Bee to the hilt when it comes to writing out lists, with a little bit of Cricket mixed in. That's when I embraced that style. And That's when it started to get much easier to actually clean and organise in my most macro styles. Hopefully eventually my lists will be come a little simpler as I become more consistent in getting the things done.

I always fold laundry while watching KZread. :) Today I left a few wrinkles in a junky t-shirt instead of refolding it, and a lot of wrinkles in the set of sheets I folded. The sheets will be going on the bed in a few days when my son gets home and needs his bed and I will probably wear the shirt asap because it will drive me crazy knowing it is wrinkled in the drawer. I am always late for everything because I can't even brush my hair without cleaning every piece of hair out of the brush before putting it away, and it has to be put away. I definitely need to get mo' GETMO in my life! Thanks for sharing tips with the rest of us with such honesty!

I stumbled upon this podcast at the perfect time. I just downsized from a 1000 sq foot apartment to a 648 sq foot apartment. I thought I did a pretty good job of downsizing, but-apparently not. The movers put the boxes in right up against the shelving units and bookcases I need to stick the stuff in the boxes on. So I have to move everything the movers just moved in order to put everything away. I am just exhausted. I’ve been working pretty steadily since I got here, but I have miles to go and probably more stuff to give away before this space is liveable. It’s Thursday morning. Oh. DID I mention I have overnight guests coming on Sunday? GETMO is my new motto! 😂

Shortcuts is key. Hehehe. But not in every aspect of our lives. An employee being paid lots of money, can't procastinate and at the last minute, just do things good enough.... Procrastination is one thing, overwhelmed with many things all at once is another, not getting help from others (family/team members) is another thing.. identify what the real problem is. Doing just good enough is not the answer, just a short term solution. So long as we don't tackle the real problem, we will forever have this problem.

Last night I remembered the 10-minute start-up suggestion for Getmo. The ADHDstartmotor often gets stuck, and how the 10-min timer "crutch" can help - by using it to 1) just ACCESS (group C+D) what is really is today, (instead of 2 hrs of videos), or start doing anything getmo. I can do this WHILE I'm listening to your great podcast! (But I'll still save the walls for a less stressed day... I'll call it a project, assess, and spend some 10-min sessions for planning how.) I do dishwasher filling while waiting for the water to boil (so I don't risk it boiling dry...) (In a 1 BR apt, there aren't so many extra spaces...) Have fun at your conference!❤

Re the 26 min mark in your video, I started being more organized when I labeled and categorized my things. Then I started finding a home for them when I thought of my spaces as being similar to a retail store. Where would these things go and where should they go in my house so they can be found? I’m still constantly sorting and making small piles with incomplete projects but then I have to make time to complete those things because otherwise they take up space. This could be as simple as fixing something with glue that lingers around incomplete. You have to make decisions and then be action oriented. That is difficult if you have depression, physical pain, or overwhelmed with anxiety. I try to make the most of it when I get bursts of motivation. You will be stronger in the long run but you have to let go and keep moving. Focus on your health so you don’t procrastinate too much. Swimming makes me feel very different and motivated afterwards.

I've had Cass, Dawn and Dana on random videos throughout the last week or so of decluttering. I cannot thank you all enough. I'm on my 4th go through of my craft supplies and tech today, I cannot believe how much I have as a single person in a one bed flat. And I know I didn't have a massive amount of excess to begin with, but it has really blown my mind what I do have. Several bags to be donated, gone to rubbish and recycling. Today I found 5 unused notebooks! Had no idea I had them. And I finally threw away some tech boxes I'd been holding on to for more than 3 years, just in case. My surfaces are getting there, but there is more to do still :-) It feels so uplifting already, definitely has lifted a weight from me, and I know I couldn't have done it without these supportive ladies. Great advice and motivation! THANK YOU!

I have to say ( after watching this a Y e a r Later , lol) that the Kitchen Counter " visual " you spoke of is spot on. .. ; Even as a " Bee ".. (being Visual Organizer) ..I only have out things I actually USE , most everyday. I have my Toaster stored, the Mini Food Processor. The Ninga mini Blender. The Egg Cooker. These are all stored in one cabinet, on a shelf. I actually do not have a lot of Cabinets, so a lot of my Glassware , Cups, Small plates , etc are stored on open shelving, above where the Tea/ Coffee/ French Press. Etc is stored on the top of an Antique dresser that is also used for Storage. I still need certain things out and visible.. but I also know that Counter space is limited . My Spices are stored on the bottom shelf of a very large 3 level hanging Plate Rack ...where the plates are stored( near the Stove ).So I have what I consider a " happy medium " ... with seen and unseen items being stored. I really enjoyed this Podcast even though it's....a y e a r Later. Who knew.... ??! 🤷🏼‍♀️ And addressing the " Overwhelm " and Procrastination.... One of the best Topics you've done. .... " Spirit is never late " ... it arrives when it is meant to. Amen. ✨️😋💫🙏🏻 Thank you. 💜
