My last day working as a shoe store manager I caught a shoplifter and had to drive 45 minutes each way to the court three times because the shoplifter didn’t show up, didn’t have a lawyer and then asked for an extension. I told the judge I was done coming to the court because I didn’t work for that company anymore and it wasn’t fair to my new employer.

There's a reason retailers tell their employees not to pursue thieves - they know that shrink is a small percentage of their losses, but they can't let theft come too easy or they'll actually start to notice it financially.

@@Bando-fx4mf Those get away cars are usually stolen. The license plate readers don't work. Until digital license plates become a thing and can be remotely changed to STOLEN, it probably isn't going to do anything, unless that system is hooked up to the police's stolen vehicle registry.

I volunteer at a non-profit thrift store. It amazes me how much is shoplifted. It is a growing problem. After the store was recognized for being one of the best, shoplifting greatly increased. After the reopening , it got WORSE!!! C'mon people, it's a NONPROFIT!!!

Hats off to the old gal at the end of the video. She gets it. I worked in retail briefly during the Great Recession and stores don't eat the losses from shoplifting, they pass them on to the customers who pay for their goods. Stealing is a crime and should always be treated as such, no matter how small the theft. The store I worked at had a zero tolerance policy for theft and prosecuted all the shoplifters they caught, including employees who were walked out by the police in handcuffs. I realize life can be tough for poor people but turning to crime is not the answer. Our country needs to improve social safety nets so that people don't have to resort to theft to fill their family's basic needs.

These aren't "poor" people trying to fill their bellies, these are thiefs, period. Some (most?) are kleptomaniacs and the rest common thieves. All are criminals.

So unfortunate we honest shoppers have to needlessly wait 30 minutes for a cosmetic item to be unlocked and there’s no wiggle room to compare labels and read product information because a busy associate is sharing the same key throughout the store and then I turn the corner walk down the isle wait again to purchase a house tool

You can find way more information about every product online as well, including reviews and other great information. Only grocery stores will survive as Brick and Mortars, those are far harder to go only online.

The inconvenience of having to wait for someone to unlock the secured product is what is keeping the price of that product down. You will pay much more for the convenience due to the thefts. The store will not absorb the expense of losing it, the consumer does.

I work in cosmetics in Walmart. Sometimes there may be nobody specifically assigned to cosmetics at that particular time. that’s why it took forever for someone to come help you, hence why this particular associate needs to move around the store with the same keys, just happens to be caught by your eye and was probably doing other projects outside of cosmetics. Typically, there should be someone inside the cosmetics department. Sadly, more lock ups in cosmetics appeared more as of last December as well in my location.

That old lady was awesome!

I respect that grandma detouring that thief at the end. Also, she said it best, "You just jack up the price for everybody else because of you a**holes!" So true!

I see your point, but I think the real power of this device is that the thieves will take the path of least resistance and target stores who don't have this type of security. Remember Car Club steering wheel locks? That was even part of their sales pitch- they said it was difficult to remove, not impossible- but thieves will move on to cars that don't have it. If you are in the parking lot of a large mall and looking to steal a Honda Civic, you'll probably have several options- and you aren't likely to target the one that has a steering wheel lock if the others don't have it.

I have worked retail for most of my working life, I'm 38 now, shoplifting hasn't gotten any worse than it has always been. The problem is none of this stuff is "outsmarting" anyone, because they know the vast majority of stores make it company policy that you are not allowed to stop shop lifters you are only allowed to service them and call a manager. Seriously this does absolutely nothing and thieves know they will get away with it since there is nothing we can do.

People will take the risk regardless of threats of prosecution. That's literally the concept of shoplifting. You have to supply people with enough money to get what they need and want so there's no desire to 'shoplift'. You can better attempt this through UBI and/or a raised minimum wage.

I worked loss prevention at kmart before it went out of business in like 2014. They literally wanted us to get in front of those shop lifters and try to stop them, without putting hands on them first. One dude pulled a knife and even though I kept him from stealing the cart of stuff, I got fired for not stopping him and having him arrested. I realized this wasn't worth $11 an hour.

I knew someone that worked as a security guard at Target and he said he literally couldn't do anything but ask them to stop (no physical touching) and call the police and report what they looked like, their license plate, etc. If they aren't an actual police officer they can't do anything and it's a huge liability for the company if anyone gets injured. Every store employee is told to comply with anyone threatening harm. If anyone in K-Mart tried to tell this person otherwise, they would've been liable for a massive wrongful termination lawsuit.

Oh please, you don't need a study lol. Certain communities lack certain values and in this woke era, they have nothing to fear from the justice system as they will not serve any time or be released in a half an hour. Go look at the videos on KZread. Most of these thefts are for luxury items. You don't see videos of groups of people shoplifting Walmart brand shoes, they're robbing Nikes and Yeezys. You don't see videos of people robbing goodwill for clothes. They're going to high-end shops. They're stealing jewelry. They're stealing phones. They're stealing laptops. They're stealing high priced electronics. Theft is illegal, end of story. There is never and will never be a legitimate/legal reason to steal.

I have worked in retail all my life. There used to be plain clothes security who walked the stores catching shoplifters back in the day. But that went the way of the dinosaur. Now, technology has supposedly taken its place. However, if what is taken isn't over $1000 the police won't even come out for it, at least not in any of the stores I have been employed with. I don't get paid enough money to EVER try and stop or apprehend a shoplifter. That is a very dangerous thing to do and not worth possibly losing your life over. Even with modern technology, it can't completely stop it from happening, it's merely a deterrent. It's almost as difficult as controlling the weather.

Recently, due to relaxed gun laws, a store worker shot a pregnant women because he thought she was shoplifting. She is in the hospital and he is pleading self-defense with the help of Republican made gun laws. He could very well get away with it. I wouldn’t feel safe trying to stop anyone either. Anyone could have a gun these days and it never ends well for anyone.

Yup! You're right on point. Here in CA anything valued at less then $951 is a misdemeanor ticket. And that's per theft. So I can go down the block and steal $950 worth of goods from CVS, then head to Macy's and get a new $950 outfit. Maybe hit up Petco and get my pets $950 worth of stuff. I'll have worked up an appetite so I'll probably swing by a Whole Foods and help myself to some things. I now have thousands of $ in stolen merchandise. Worse case scenario I get caught leaving the last scene. Each robbery is a separate incident. Officer writes me my citation and I'm on my way. 👋🏼

No, it’s because states like California penalize store employees and loss prevention for stopping thieves. All a criminal had to do was cry discrimination in court. Companies were getting sued by criminals who stole from the store. Now thanks to props 47 and 57 being passed in California, it essentially legalizes theft and protects the criminals from ever being prosecuted.

I haven't heard Costco being victimized. Other stores should copy their store layout. Do not put expensive items by the door, or display them behind chain enclosures where a store associate can get them as customers check out. At least nobody can just grab & go if there's a barrier!

I hope it won't happen - online purchases aren't immune to theft anyway ("porch pirates", bricks sent to customers etc.). Maybe it's time to return to simpler times before piggly wiggly invented self service... Or maybe we reaching the point where people realize that some behaviors must be penalized.

I totally understand why stores are doing this and it’s honestly necessary. But it’s only going to make things worse because people like me already prefer online. But we know that's not the case. Some of these stores have 3 people trying to fill 5 positions. In my case it's toothpaste that I refuse to wait around to be unlocked so that I can PAY to have.

People think "Oh just file a claim on your insurance". There is no insurance for shrinkage (internal and external theft) However, the biggest shrinkage for retailers is not shoplifting. It's internal theft from employees and paperwork errors. I was in retail for 40 years.

There is business insurance that covers losses... did you know employers with over 200 employees get a tax credit for26000 per employee... haha that free money just to employpeiple and they stealing identities and claiming employees that were gone months ago

As a customer who always pays, I am sickened when I have to wait 30 minutes to browse razors, or electronics, etc, all high theft items. It’s usually because I have to find an employee. Now since it’s taking so long to browse, I just shop online and I doubt I am alone. Soon large retail stores will be closed or very $$$ to offset being open, like convenience stores. I hate it, as I enjoy the shopping experience, or used to. I understand we have to stop thieves, but not at the suffering of those who don’t commit crimes. Between self checkout and now this, I shop everything except groceries online, I would do that too if the people picking items weren’t feckless and dirty. Maybe allow dogs in stores for LP, what about giving more pay and tasers to LP, what about arming law abiding citizens and making theft a crime worthy of lethal force. All great options if you ask me.

As long as the membership is free, I wouldn't mind registering & given a card to get in.

Sad that we have to come to this. I believe all we need to do is have stricter punishment for these actions. There are none these days so repeat criminals fear nothing; no one.

I shoplift at walmart all the time food grocery eggs vitamins medecines mouthwash razor shaving cream lotion etc and more i saved so much money everything that i took so far roughly guess near 10k or more and the most i spend so far is like around 20 bucks i always just scan 1 item the cheapest one thats it and just walk away nobody even checks my reciept checker dont even check they just glance at my reciept and say thank you thats it and other times i would just walk rite out the door and hold an old reciept they never check ive saved so much totally unbelievable 👍

If this is real and you're serious you should stop. I shop lifted first and last time I did. I got caught and it didn't end well.

When I was a restaurant manager, I always instructed my staff that if anyone were to dine and dash, you just let them go. Try and get their license plate if you can while staying inside the building. Never chase. You could end up getting hurt if they have a weapon.

Not to mention the legal implications if someone is injured in process- and sadly, that includes the shoplifter. Chase a shoplifter that runs into traffic voluntarily and gets hit by a car, you can guarantee some dirt bag lawyer will be salivating at a chance to sue the business.

Spring breakers in Texas who ordered something from menu. And they will come back with a bill including percentage of tip before they could cook for them. Black colleges students exploded. They were told if you want to eat something or police will be called to remove them. It wasn’t racist. It’s fairness. And hotel rooms required deposit in case they wrecked the room too. And shoplifting continues. Sad.

@@kevinmach730 In theory this is true, but in practice it isn't. The only way to sue would be to admit to a felony, and most criminals aren't going to dry snitch their felony for a small payout. They also tend to not have lawyers at all, or know how to contact one; let alone have access to a good enough lawyer to win them a case against a corporate conglomerate. They also steal for a living, they definitely couldn't afford a lawyer even if they wanted one. And nobody is gonna pro bono some dude who runs a shoplifting ring.

@@PTMG I appreciate the comment, but I couldn't possibly disagree with it more. For one, in practice it is true and DOES happen. There have been plenty of cases where people sue police or companies and receive judgements when they were doing something wrong (and it doesn't have to be a felony).Second of all, they don't have to admit to a crime in many cases- there are a million reasons they could spin it - for example, saying you didn't no why you were being chased and fled out of pure fear. And your completely confused about the lawyer aspect. If you get a court appointed attorney for the criminal aspect, it may not be the best representation, but everyone can have one by law. But when it comes to be awarded money, that happens in civil court- different entirely and there are tons of attorneys that will take that action on contingency, meaning you don't have to pay them a dime unless they win you money.

There have always been many thieves among us. We are just more aware of them these days due to all the technology available for passing information along.

When I was growing up in the 80s, it was such a shame to even sample a cookie in a store. Today stealing is no big deal. Strange times we live in.

I don't know about you, but as soon as I see a cardboard cut-out security guard/cop staring blankly at me in a store, my urge to shoplift immediately disappears. What a great deterrent.

I wouldn't buy anything like a drill that needed to be activated at checkout to work. I can only imagine the issues that would bring. Especially with the push to have people self-checkout. What next? Have me build the item I'm going to buy, then have me check myself out, then have me activate it.

Good point...Imagine "activating" the drill at checkout, going home and charging it overnight, then testing it the next day only to find out it wasn't activated correctly. Now imagine if it was a gift to someone else and it was shipped to them right after purchase. In both cases, the users wouldn't even know if it was an activation issue or it was a lemon product...talk about a nightmare.

Keep in mind the responsibility falls on behalf of most retail stores because they’re not willing to press charges, not making a difference, despite employees being assaulted for trying to intervene. EDIT: Look up San Francisco Whole Foods and 20+ Walgreens that were forced to close before you start criticizing me. And if you still criticize you’re basically defending criminals of the next generation.

Depending on the type of store and what's stolen, it's often not worth pressing charges. (Assuming the police don't arrive while the thief is still in the store or they are weren't being a potential threat). In CA, some large chain store managers are directed to not even bother filing a police report if the merchandise stolen is worth less than $950. If the suspect is gone police will consider it a non-priority call and could take hours to get there. Company potentially looses more productivity wise with the time taken to pull the manager and any additional staff to speak with police and provide statements. IF best case scenario police catch someone in the act, store has to hope whatever they stole is worth more then $950 to even have an OPTION to press charges.

@@CB-cv9yh But that is also a problem. Look at Whole Foods flagship store at San Francisco for example. Even though each individual shoplifters doesn’t steal $950 worth of items it encourages more criminals to steal to the point that Whole Foods was forced to shutdown recently. Even Target there made the decision to close at 6 PM to reduce stealing. Where else would workers would buy their food after their shift ends? Before they use to have securities locking shoplifters in the room before police arrives. Since the retail stores want to avoid bad reputations for the way shoplifters were handled and to avoid any potential lawsuits they gave in to apathy and do nothing all together.

@@chalexen2862 Profit is not the problem for W.F. when you're charging $7.99 for 12oz of OJ. They had a safety issue. Cars getting broken into in their underground parking. Drug use in the bathrooms. Outburst in the store and attacks on staff. On top of the shoplifting. From a business standpoint, they were smart to close before they had a newsworthy incident that drew negative attention. Now that would have been a P.R. nightmare and profit draining for that location. No point in a security guard or employee puting themselves in harms way to detain someone for who knows how long before the police arrive. All for a petty theft charge. They'll go through the jail booking process only to be released O.R. on a case file a D.A. will never look at for more then 45 seconds. Why should business owners have to take on any more burden when the court system and law makers stopped doing their part years ago.

How are they able to continue to pay rent in a city like SF if stores like Walgreen and Whole Foods were forced to temporarily close? Somebody has to be held accountable otherwise the problem will only get bigger. Those examples are just the beginning.

That's not fair. I prosecuted a shoplifter once, and the police said "You got your merchandise back, why bother?" Because if it's in the news, that a businees prosecutes, the shoplifters take notice. Not even all the measures Walmart has, stops theft - that's why they've started closing stores.

You sure outsmarted them.

Best deterrent against shoplifting (based on what was shown) is staging a grandma at the door to assault criminals. Go grandma!

Maybe we need to start voting for candidates who will be tough on crime.

This discriminates against members of the shoplifting community. These stores need to hire social workers.

I once caught some kids shoplifting and on the way out i told them “it’s alright i got your license plate” and one of them, who didn’t steal they just drove, got in my face saying i didn’t have their permission😅. I was like “sweetie i don’t need it, your friends were stealing and your driving”

We ALL have to pay more for things because of these thieves and all of the prevention measures needed.

How about consequences for the thefts? It’s known that there will be no actions taken against the thieves.

Thieves will just buy a burner phone to enter that phone number into the system.

I'm surprised this method hasn't been implemented: mandate a membership. It doesn't even have to cost anything, but it would enforce associating a picture and identification with anyone going into the store. I bet costco doesn't see much theft for this reason.

A google search shows that indeed Costco's shoplifting rate is very low. I think that a membership model, or at least having to make an appointment or show ID to enter a store, is the future of retail. Imagine having to show your shopper card to enter Kroger! Also, facial recognition of shoplifters could be shared between stores to keep them out. My impression of the retail theft situation is that retailers don't want to invest more money as long as the cost of theft is less than the cost of prevention. There is a lot more that retailers could do, but they choose not to do it because it just isn't worth it.

I work in retail and they tell us to log all suspicious activity. Most dont bother because they would be logging reports every hour.

Pay a living wage maybe? Ever think this is just people recouping stolen wages? Society brought this on itself. And until McDonald's pays $30 dollars an hour and the ceo doesn't make multi millions then this is just going to get worse. Blame the game not the player.

I've only watched as far as the drill with the chip in it. I agree this is a nationwide problem that needs to be gotten under control somehow... but putting a chip in something that has to be activated correctly before I get home after I pay for it and then you get home and it doesn't work, that's going to be a worse problem for people

My community has lost Shoe and Clothing stores, a full size Walgreens, a Big Lots store, a Dollar Store, and even the THRIFT STORE. Psychopaths who think that everything is really theirs, for the taking. Parents who train their kids how to shoplift are the ones that hurt our community. it's why we "can't have nice things." We are a small city and could not afford to lose those stores. Now that mall is a ghost town. We're lucky to still have the grocery store, and Auto Zone, and the tiny Walgreens they built for prescriptions only.

You literally can’t outsmart us

I'm as honest as the day is long but I wouldn't care to share my cell phone # to open up a merchandise case. I get enough junk calls and texts without stores selling information I gave them for "security purposes". And then if a store does later report something missing I don't want one of the lazier type of police officers going after me because they got my number from the store and they don't want to spend the energy figuring out who really did it.

@@marcuslinton310 No, I use a credit card. I don't really care about the points you mentioned. In these times if you use your cell phone, or make any non-cash financial transaction info is gathered. That's not so much of a concern to me, not fond of it, but there it is. Giving out a phone # though opens up more possibility of spam calls and texts, and associating yourself with a display cabinet being opened whether or not you ended up purchasing anything just seems like a great way for some sloppy police work to add all sorts of complications to your day.

They will simply get a stolen phone or get a fake number. What a terrible sign for society.

I would never give my phone number to a store just so I can open a shelf. Also I’d never buy a product that had a chip in it that has the possibility of bricking the product if it glitches

Great ideas for reducing theft. Taking shoplifting reports and hauling in these crooks used up a lot of time when I was a cop.

Just cause they leave the price tag on a item they are selling doesn’t mean it’s automatically stolen!! I buy clearance items and have a room full of stuff I actually bought on clearance, I turn around and sell them online. That doesn’t make them stolen!! I think they meant the security tags w/c require a special device to take off.

We need qualified immunity laws to protect/hold harmless store owners and their staff, if/when force is used against these worthless criminals. In addition, we desperately need harsh, mandatory punishments for the POS when they're caught.

Corporal punishments, finger/ear amputations, decades of hard labor, and public executions if it were up to me. Vlad the Impaler of Romania 🇷🇴 once placed a solid gold chalice in the town's square... it sat there, untouched for years. Why? People knew what would happen to the one dumb enough to take it.
