Outlaw King: Review & Analysis
Фильм және анимация
In this video essay / review, I give my unsolicited opinions of Netflix's Outlaw King, starring Chris Hemsworth, and compare it to the very similar Mel Gibson film The Singing Detective.

Fun fact: The War Wolf was being built as the castellan to Sterling offered surrender. Edward refused because he was curious about how the trebuchet would perform.

Edward II wasn't at Loudon hill, i'm hoping they make another one where they take it all the way to Bannockburn, at which point they'll need Edward there or else it wouldn't really make much sense
Ransom of Edward II is the GDP of a nation. It's insane to think they would let him walk away.

Yes it was mental, I understand the need to condence the movie into about a year and a half of time 1306-1307 and not included the decisive battle of Bannockburn 1314, but tacking on that fight at the end was insane, even if you need to have Edward show up, you could just have him fleeing as he often did.

Doune Castle is the only privately-owned castle in Scotland, as it was in 1974, and the Scottish Historical authorities are very protective of all the others. Neither set of filmmakers had much choice.
Hit it right on the head when you said "You don't end a Robert the Bruce movie with Loudon Hill, you end it with Bannockburn", I was taken aback when they ended it with a battle that... while quite important, can't match Bannockburn in any capacity.

Yea totally concur my reaction to the last part left me jaw dropped and in a ten minute coma of speechless WTF disbelief!! I mean they had done so, so well up to that point! I loved "Braveheart" (Being Scottish it's in the contract along with Irn-Bru, deep fried Pizza and Buckfast Tonic wine) but I was really pleased up until that point with how they had potrayed the characters, 13th/14th century Scotland , and the costumes and armour were great. Dont get me wrong like most Scots we forgave Mel for portraying us in Kilts and even the woad face paint because secretly we kinda wished it was true as it looked cool as F**k! But as a historian I really appreciated "Outlaw King's" attempts at authenticity. Then the last scene jeezo what were they thinking? To me that last scene in Outlaw King is on a par with William Wallace getting the Princess of Wales in the family way and knowing that the progeny could only be Edward III who was arguably an even bigger c**t to Scotland than his grandfather "Longshanks"! I did not mind them leaving the story at Loudon Hill as that would then set up another movie climaxing at Bannockburn and perhaps even a wee spin off about Sir James Douglas' adventures after and his later heroic death on Crusade in Spain! But now if they continue the story this is going to hang over the whole movie because when Bruce perhaps the greatest Captain in Europe at the time does finally take the field at Bannockburn facing a far larger more powerful English Army with the fate of the nation in the balance! We will know that they could have had the whole thing sown up ten years before at Loudon Hill wi Pizza suppers and Buckie all roon for the boys courtesy of Big Rab! Anway dude great stuff enjoying yer stuff esp the Witchfinder General lol
I think the final scene is voluntarily like that because it is quoting the Scottish anthem: "O Flower of Scotland When will we see your like again? That fought and died for Your wee bit Hill and Glen And stood against him Proud Edward's Army And sent him homeward tae think again"
I totally concur with the ending. It is so STUPID to have Edward walk away. And if you want to end the film at Loudon Hill, make Valence the main villain. Historically he was the commander of the English at that battle, and was the Bruce's second cousin. They could have played off that dynamic beautifully. I still enjoy the film immensely, but there was a chance for it to be even greater
That's Doune Castle which is up the road from me (just past Stirling and Bannockburn) and it's all the castles - exterior and interior - in The Holy Grail, they dressed it up differently and shot it from different angles. The audio guide from Terry Jones explains the history of each part of the castle and then goes on to list which scenes were filmed there.
Bravehearts battle scene was an actual battle done with LARPers with real yet dull swords, most of them were drunk and people got really injured. You can't top that with CGI and fake blood.

Nah. I loved this way more. Longshanks in Braveheart, as much as i loved that film, was more like Voldemort than an actual historical king. In Braveheart, the English were comic book villains. In this, they and the Scots were actual people. The portrayal of Edward II as a violent psychopath rather than the traditional portrayal of him as an effeminate wimp was an interesting change. Bruce was portrayed as an excommunicated murderer with real flaws.
@kylebalmer3396

Buy longshanks was like a comic book villain. Theres an account of him literally frightening a peasant to death. Does Stephen Dillard look like he could do that? No but mcgoohan does. Dillanes no hammer of the Scots and his son was apparently homosexual and weak willed in real life

@TheSamuraijim87
3 жыл бұрын
@@kylebalmer3396 yes, he and he frightened a peasant to death by dint of his height, temper and reputation. Not by being some ridiculous charicature, like Braveheart portrays. That's how scared of him, and how formidable he was, to the peasants of Britain. McGoohan brings evil to Longshanks, and he was doubtless a ruthless leader, but completely ignores the human side or the dedicated monarch, which were both essential part of Edward's character. Dillane brings presence and authority to Longshanks, which is exactly what he had. It's also exactly why the Scots asked Edward to arbitrate the succession - there simply wasn't any other figure who could match Edward's stature (in political power and physique) in all of Europe.
Doune was also used for filming in game of thrones if im not mistaken.
You had me at the Monty Python connection!

I showed my mom who is a big Monty Python fan the scene at 1:42 and within seconds she recognized it
Bannockburn has some amazing parts to the battle, like where the camp followers supposedly made themselves into a fourth column to break English moral. Or when the Princes bodyguard fought like a mad man to get him free only to tell the Prince his honour wouldn't let him run and so he just rode right ack into the battle to die honourably. Bannockburn could be an hour and a half movie all on it's own (with the build up included obviously).
It was a great 4-hour epic, crammed into 2 hours of screentime.
Thank you for roasting the history buff channel I am now a subscriber

@DariusOfPersia
4 жыл бұрын
@@BigBazz-Clips Yeah, but that really doesn't matter. Both historically and for the sake of the movie, what's important is that the Scottish won a major victory there. The fact that it happened on a bridge ultimately doesn't mean anything.
@BigBazz-Clips
4 жыл бұрын
@@DariusOfPersia kinda does considering the history behind it 1. the tactics the scots used were actually quite clever and would be amazing to see on screen. more interesting than the generic hollywood moshpit 2. Wallace wasn't even the main commander at Stirling Bridge, it was the Earl of Moray which isn't mentioned at all. The Earl of Moray is actually killed during the battle leaving Wallace as the sole leader of the army. My point is that i know directors are going to take some liberties when they make a movie, they have to, but with braveheart they didn't even try. You might not care if it's not your own, history which i think is the view most americans have, so long as they can see the English lose
@DariusOfPersia
4 жыл бұрын
@@BigBazz-Clips I'm fully aware of the actual history of the battle. The tactics, while interesting, will not matter to most of the audience. Most people are simply not hardcore history/military history nerds. Whether the battle happened on a bridge or in a field makes no difference to the overall story. What matters is that the Scottish won, and the English lost. It's the same idea with historical dates. I love learning what dates things happened on and whatnot, but that's ultimately way less important than knowing what actually happened.

historically accurate, except where it wasn't. and as a proud Coloradan I can confirm, Coors light is not beer.
A shark was jumped in that review somewhere 😂
Sure, historical accuracy in movies plays second fiddle to good story telling and is never truly achievable (I'm with you all the way), but I can't unsee that horrible draw at 3:10.
This is the better movie, you know why? Because it's actually respectful of Scottish culture, rather than sticking us in kilts and Pictish war paint or mooning the English at the Battle of Sterling Bridge (yeah, sticking your butt out at a bunch of dudes holding pointy sticks... that's a great idea). This movie actually depicts Scotland as it was in the middle ages, a complex and not necessarily unified country, rather than the one dimensional hicks from Braveheart. I agree that the movie was too short and the end could have been better, but at least it didn't end with a scene that would serve as a prototype for the Passion. It is undeniably the more accurate movie, especially when it comes to Scottish history.
Saw what you did there .. at the end
They appear to have confused Ed II with Henry V in looks. Also, Edward II was more interested in hedging and ditching than fighting.
this tho, this i wanna watch
At the end of the battle : "Ok that was the last cent of the budget, wrap it up people!"
There’s simply no way that the nobles would’ve allowed Edward to fight de Brus like that, precisely for that reason. The reason that the nobles got Edward’s ass away from Bannockburn post haste. Without Edward as ransom, the Scots cleaned up on ransoms between the captured nobles, though de Brus allowed Marmaduke Tweng to go home w/o ransom.
they let him go at the end i imagine because he was never at that battle in history.
I'm very biased in my hatred for braveheart as I'm from scotland and we are taught in school how it butchers our history
Excellent video. small point, this movie stars Chris Pine, not Chris Hemsworth.
Tried making this in total war It was awesome
Honestly the biggest disappointment is that with how well they portrayed the Black Douglas, they cut off before reaching his best exploit, namely his capture of Roxburgh. That would've been awesome to see in the movie, just a bunch of guys crawling across the fields hidden by their cloaks, trying to get up the walls before they're noticed.
They did shoot the Holy GRRRRail in Scotland :)
Damn it, now I want to watch the movie again and go play some Medieval Kingdoms 1212 😁

Uh, pretty sure Chris Hemsworth is the Australian Chris.
I, funny enough, watched both Braveheart and the Outlaw King more or less back to back, and yeah I think as far as visual representation of the forces and tactics Braveheart takes the cake, but the action, and accuracy (and therefore believability), blows Braveheart out of the water. I think Outlaw King could be cleaned up around the board but honestly, I will never have to watch Braveheart again because of this movie. Outlaw King was incredible, and the Battle at Stirling Bridge may beat the Battle of Loudon Hill, but the ambush by the highlanders beats the Battle at Falkirk.
I should've waited until I watched the whole video to comment I laughed my ass off the last minute of the video.

6:00 I don't know why the writers would make such a dumbest decision. Irl they would just capture Edward II, the war would be over and The Bruce would likely get his family back, maybe that didn't sound like a satisfying conclusion to them but it does to me.
