I'm sure I'm not the first to mention this, but here goes. If we are dead set on having the third film take place in China, then the bad guys should be obvious. The Japanese. After all the Japanese Empire committed a lot of atrocities, and they had a good military uniform as well. The Imperial Japanese Army should have been the big bad guys in TOTDE, since they are looking for a way to end the war in China, kick the British, French, and Americans out of the Pacific, and secure their position against the Soviet Union. An unstoppable Terracotta army, that doesn't need sleep, food, or water would sound pretty awesome to me if I was Emperor Hirohito or Hideki Tojo. We shouldn't need a Sure Fine, Chinese warlord substitute for Nazis when the Japanese exist, and they are just as bloodthirsty as their European counterparts. Forget not knowing set up and pay off, apparently the writers slept through history class as well. Otherwise, I do love the alternative movie you set up.

Well, the whole "rogue army" thing kind of has precedent. In the years following the Japan's withdrawal from China, there were warlords in certain parts of China that had to be dealt with as the PLA tried to unite the country. This is essentially the plot of "The Taking of Tiger Mountain" (a lovely piece of Chinese Communist propaganda that is also way too fun of an action flick).

I think a good compromise would've been a Mongolian mummy, kind of like Tamerlane. He was a Turk-mongolian warlord who conquered the Middle East and his tomb was famous for a certain inscription: "Whoever opens my tomb shall unleash an invader more terrible than I." Mere hours after the soviets opened it, the Nazis invaded. So while they aren't Chinese or Egyptian, a Mongolian warlord might be a good compromise between the two, with an East Asian aesthetic and access to mystical mummy stuff in Egypt. Edit: I watched the rest of the video and I think that it would also fit in with the main character's espionage activities during ww2. With the nazis trying to recruit a mummy army against the Soviet Union.

  • @danpeterson114

True. As good as this scenario is, having Nazis prowling through Egypt, just like in Indiana Jones, would have gotten this nixed by the movers and shakers as obvious plagiarism. There was plenty of fighting between the Italians and British in North Africa before the Germans became involved. But like it or not, setting it in China was probably smart move and ultimately the Asian sales might have made it far more of a success than another "Egyptian Mummy seequel considering the first Egyptian Mummy sequel as a bit lackluster.

When the film ends a British 'M' type intelligence officer decides to cover up the whole incident "last thing we need is panic spreading amongst the troops". Okay there will be SOME German archaeologists, but the main antagonists will be 5th columnists.

This sounds like a genuinely good alternative of the movie. The only thing I would point out is that Alex would likely be the one serving in the British army because well, there is a war on and there's no way a young able body man in his prime would be on the sidelines unless he was serving on the home front. I would perhaps instead of him being an oxford student, make him an intelligence analyst at Bletchley Park where decoded Nazi transmissions provide a clue to their plan and so that's how he gets involved.

I would argue there could be a good Incan themed mummy movie. Mummies in their culture could still own land and were treated as if they were living. Including having full dinners with other mummies. There would be a 'speaker' for a mummy that essentially ran things for them. Could be an Incan Mummy resurrects and starts raising the dead Incans of the past to rebuild and reclaim his title of Sapa Inca. But instead of killing the mummy, they have to find a descendant of the Mummy's last speaker to communicate with him in Ancient Quechua. And it ends with a climatic stand off between Peruvian Forces and the Mummy's undead army with the heroes trying to stop both sides. With the moral being "Colonialism was bad. But we cannot remake the past. But we can make a better future tomorrow."

@The Martial Lord of Loyalty There were dismal abuses no one can condone. Yet there was also an effort to enact royal laws to protect the natives, there was never a concerted effort to commit genocide against these peoples. Spain even went to war with other Spaniards from Perú that didn't want to let go of the abusive colonial system that was first enacted and that benefited them and which the Crown wanted to change (look for Guerra de los encomenderos if you're interested) and you hardly hear about that. Also as any genetic test or a look at modern Peruvians can tell you, there was a lot mixing, much more so than killing.

I'd go a step further, and fully embrace the rule of the trilogy a la Scream 3- what you thought you knew in the first 2 films was a lie... Have it be revealed that Seti was always the bad guy, but that the legends of the Medjai were simplified over the generations due to the fact that Imhotep was also a villain- and whose return they were guarding against. Anck Su Namun can be revealed to be just trying to get out of a forced marriage to a despot, and Imhotep to be a man driven to dark magics to try and help her. Dark magics originally researched so that Seti could become the living embodiment of Set- and kept secret from his daughter, Nefertiri, and the Medjai. Link back to reference the mix up the Bainbridge Scholars had in the first film, by having the initial partial resurrection of Seti by one of their expeditions- which Alex is accompanying as part of his Oxford education. He realises they are making a mistake, as this tomb has similar inscriptions about a Mummy's wrath- but appears to be set up to actively encourage the resurrection of the occupier once enough time has passed for the magics invoked to take hold. But being a junior member of staff, they don't listen to him as they think the tales he and his parents told are simply fiction. Oops, one angry Pharaoh is now loose... The race against time element can be trying to stop Seti from obtaining the last of the magic he was trying to locate in life with his wars against his neighbours- which was interrupted by his murder. Yep, Nazi archaeology expeditions can be co-opted if required at this stage, though mind control and the plagues worked in the first movie. This time though they are in the hands of a general, not a priest, so could be even more formidable. As part of the subsequent chasing down of Seti, the heroes have to also bring back Anck Su Namun as part of the deal to get Imhotep to join them. They initially want him to use equal powers against Seti, but Imhotep can't access them because he has been returned to the earthly plane in mortal form. This could lead to a lot of interesting interplay between the heroes and anti-heroes, some of whom have literally killed each other in the past- and Imhotep loving, but not forgiving, Anck for her trying to abandon him in the last movie. The tale can then end with a form of redemption for Imhotep at the end, as it's revealed that the Magi were originally assigned to guard against the return of Imhotep because it was prophesised that whoever killed Seti in life, would be able to do so again in death. But, once they reach the final conflict (after much shenanigans and set pieces) it doesn't work! Imhotep stabs Seti with the blade that killed him before, and Seti just laughs in his face and cuts him down. At which point Anck Su Namun leaps on him and stabs him to death, revealing that only the pair of them can fulfil the prophecy. With Seti defeated, Evie stops the army of the dead with the book and returns them to their graves- and also calls for Anubis to judge Imhotep and Anck Su Namun. For defeating Set's plan to enter the mortal realm, Ra grants them a new life with the scales rebalanced. Ardeth questions what the Medjai will do, now that their whole purpose in the world has turned out to be a lie. Imhotep simply remarks that they should go back to hunting dark creatures, as was their original purpose before Seti took them on as his personal guard. That should also sort out redoing the Mummy remake in a better manner, and a better lead in to a Dark Universe whilst we're at it.

You pretty much covered my problems with it. I would've brought back Freddie Boath who was around the same age the character was supposed to be by the time that movie came out. I would've used Kharis from The Mummy's Hand from 1940 and the 3 sequels that were made. The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost and The Mummy's Curse. There was also an animated series that had the characters traveling around the world. And they even went to China and Peru. Which is where they would've gone in that fourth movie that was never made The Mummy: Rise Of The Aztec with Antonio Banderas. Why Stephen Sommers didn't return ? Who knows ? Is like Terminator without James Cameron. I guess he was busy with G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra. But i wish he would've wrote the script and be more involved in it. He could've had other writers helping him with the scrip just better writers than those. And a better director. Someone like Joe Johnston could've replaced him. Similar to Star Wars where George Lucas didn't directed The Empire Strikes Back but developed the story and produced it and hired a director.

20:00 I think this is a reference to the cartoon (if you really think it wasn’t the highlight of my Saturday mornings, you’re mistaken). In this cartoon, we see Alex’s adolescence as he trains to be a Medjay and works to foil imhotep (yes he’s still around, he’s purple, don’t ask), so by the time all’s said and done he’s a more than capable soldier. Unfortunately, you’re right. The idea that boys take after their fathers is antiquated and dumb. Luke is terrible and his half-assed Indiana Jones schtick is aweful. Also, in regards to Yang, he’s a Kuomintang. It’s pretty obvious from the setting that we’re in the middle of the Chinese Civil War, and the Communists are the good guys (gotta get that China money). Remember, this is the same year we get Batman going to Hong Kong for a somewhat unnecessary 20 minute sequence solely to a) plant the Echograph phone, and b) get that sweet China money.

Yeah, this is DEFINITELY the MUMMY 3 that we should've had! Now that I have seen this video, I realize that there were other things wrong with it - and these points relate more to its release than its actual creative and technical merits (or lack thereof - emphasis on lack, more's the pity!) I was 13 going on 14 when the first MUMMY film came out and I saw it with my whole family, and it was such a relief to watch a couple of hours after we just finished seeing the abysmal THE PHANTOM MENACE. It was just so much fun, and I watched it many times on home video! THE MUMMY RETURNS, which I saw when I was 15 going on 16, again with my whole family, shortly after we just finished watching a Barter Theatre stage production of THE GRAPES OF WRATH (there was definitely a patterned tradition developing here even months before the first LORD OF THE RINGS film came out), was kitschy blockbuster fun - not as fresh as the first one, but still dependable escapist entertainment. I was already a fan of the original MUMMY and had fun with these two, so of course TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR failed to bring back the same childhood feeling! For crying out loud, I was already a college graduate at this point in time in 2008, the first two movies were already a distant childhood memory at this point (God I feel so old!) and having a third MUMMY at this point was so obviously an ill-fated, avaricious attempt by Hollywood to replicate the process and feeling! There's also something else about the third one going immensely against it - namely, in that it came out way too long after THE MUMMY RETURNS, which had been released months before 9-11. Now, if the 3rd MUMMY film had come out after 9-11, maybe in the summer of 2003, not only would it most likely have Sommers and Co. return and again be set in Egypt, but it actually probably would have fit the mood of the times - you know, having a plot set in WWII with the characters pitted against Nazis to match the tone of the real-life war set in the Middle East against terrorists, all while bringing the series full circle. (OK, that's just my own opinion, of course, but we all know how almost every film is a product of its time and the first two MUMMY films were no exception.) By 2008, with the war already having overstayed its welcome and extending into a second Vietnam, leading to anti-authoritarian feelings against the Bush dynasty, already the times and audience perceptions were quickly changing, and so had the trends. Comic-book movies were the main draw at this point, and there was no way that a long-delayed, sloppily-written and poorly rehashed reboot like TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR would stand a chance against the likes of IRON MAN (the first MCU film) and THE DARK KNIGHT (the best Batman movie ever made!). Finally, I have to add that this is a pretty piss-poor representation of Asian culture, a damn shame, considering that I am fond of Asian culture (particularly Edo-period Japanese) and Michelle Yeoh in particular. And if you want a movie about Yetis, go back and watch 1957's black-and-white Hammer flick THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN, which despite being dated, is not only far more intelligently written, but also has the same elements of exotic adventure and atmospheric horror that distinguished the first MUMMY.

Interesting take on how to fix that mess. Personally I wouldn't have done a 3rd mummy, so no fixing, but I can imagine the O'Conners involved in others adventures, maybe with the yetis in Tibet but no mummies. Maybe with vampires to build a "universal's monsterverse/O'Connerverse".
