Hi Steph - I am a 74-year-old grandmother that lives on the gulf coast of Texas near Houston. I love seeing this video and would like to see how you manage and what your life is like through the whole Reno. I’m sure that’s a lot of work but it kind of looks like fun too. My daughter and son-in-law and my granddaughter who was then four years old (she’s now 24), came to live with me for seven months while their home was being renovated. They had planned to rent an apartment but I convinced them to come here and save the money to put in on their home. It worked out great. I have a big home and at that time I was still working. My daughter and her family had the run of the house and she fix dinner every night. I cleaned up and did the dishes afterwards and then just went to my bedroom to watch TV a little while before I went to bed and had to get up early the next morning for work. I loved my granddaughter getting her bath and running and jumping into bed with me with her books for me to read. It was a good memory. When they left I told my daughter I sure missed her cooking and she told me she sure missed my cleaning up. Ha ha I bet you this will be good memories for you and your family. Just try to make it fun and focus on that. Many blessings and I look forward to keeping up with you and your family this summer.

I think the very best thing about your videos is that you share real life - not picture perfect, beyond belief, how could anyone else ever measure up - no just real life. When you are having a baby, moving, preparing for Reno’s, moving again (temporarily no less) and so on - that is how people’s lives actually go - there is always something and some things are bigger than others but with a smile on your face and encouragement for shining through you tackle what is handed to you and figure out how to make the best of it. Keep doing what you are doing - it is real help for real people living real lives! Hope you and your family enjoy your backyard adventure this summer!!

Would love to see weekly updates on your renovations in your home. Also would love to see how you are preparing meals and attempting to set up new routines. What an adventure you will have this summer living in your backyard. I hope you do not have many thunderstorms or super hot days to deal with while camping in your backyard. Living in middle Tennessee........ summers can be super hot and explosive with storms. Love all of your videos!

We lived for 6 months in a caravan (what you call a trailer) that was only 16 feet long! The dining table had to be made into our bed each night & our 3 sons (then aged 6, 8 & 10) used 3 of the 4 bunk beds at the other end of the caravan with 1 bed as our storage bed!! It was challenging but we all still have fond memories of it. We also realised how few clothes, dishes & general items we actually used & needed on a day to day basis. Most Aussies only use clothes lines to dry our clothes... we do! It's way cheaper & saves wear & tear on the clothes!🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

I know what you're going through. We stayed in a trailer half that size with 6 of us for 6 months while my house was being built. When we moved in the trailer, I prayed and asked God for help to get through this thinking we would only be there 3 months. Unfortunately, it took 6 months to finish the house. Buuuut...we made it through taking it one day at a time. God got us through it. We went through the winter and even did homeschooling with gloves on because the heat in the trailer was not that great. One of the things we did was go for a 1 mile walk everyday. Getting outside was helpful to not feel so cramped inside. We also tried to put away one activity before pulling out another activity to help maintain the small space. Put away this toy, game or school work before starting something else. Meal cleanup was immediately after each meal. Laughter is the best medicine and we tried to find laughter in the chaos. Blessings as you walk this adventure. You'll make Great memories!❤️

    Looking good! One suggestion, lower one of the awning poles a few inches so any rain will run off of it instead of pooling in the center and bending the center support pole. I run an RV rental company, awning parts are impossible to get right now so you don't want to damage it;

I have your printable on my fridge, and it really helped me to be accountable when I could tune in (or watch later in the day) and fill it out “with” someone. :) we camp a lot in a travel trailer, so it is fun to see what it looks like to live in one for the summer!!

Lol Aussie here, I find it hilarious that people in America’s/Canadians don’t often hang clothes on the lines. Here it’s basically ingrained in us from birth and having a dryer is a luxury :) we just hang clothing inside on hampers when it’s damp out. Different cultures :) So good to see you’re settling into your summer caravan, and it’s great to hear you and Jill doing your podcasts again :) can’t wait to see the new house!!

I live in the southern part (Appalachian Mountains) of the US and most of us line dried clothes a lot up until the last 30 years or so even though we did have a dryer and used it when needed. I still line dry in the summer. My grandma never had a dryer. She hung things up in the house when it was damp outside. It is interesting to hear Aussies mostly line dry. :)

Campers get messy soooo quickly! Ours does, at least, with just me and my husband! lol One tip with the laundry, fold the laundry as you take it off the clothesline and lay it in the basket. It saves so much time. The clothes are ready to be put away as soon as you bring them inside. I learned that as a teenager who wanted to finish chores quickly 😉 Please share all about this season of life. We'll enjoy that and I think you'll enjoy looking back when you're in your home again.

Three suggestions: Get an old bike that laughs at rain, with a basket for hauling stuff back and forth between house and trailer. That's a long slog. Buy a cheap stack of washcloths and use them instead of towels. They take up almost no space, a week's worth in one washer load and they line dry fast. Be careful, especially as Fall arrives about taking/leaving food outside. Bears. Raccoons. Skunks.

Tossing some white vinegar in the rinse cup if you have one can also help with softness, but honestly, I got to the point I prefer the crunchy feeling because it feels cleaner than when I was using detergent and softener and there was excess chemicals clinging to the fibers of my clothes.

My mother never had a dryer and she hung clothes out year round even in freezing weather. We liked to pretend to walz with my father's shirts when they came in, until they went limp and then she hung the limp laundry around the house as the furnace would finish drying the clothing. The smell of the clothing is beyond anything any fabric softener can deliver!

Drying clothes on the clothesline is a lot of fun. If it is not very windy and the heat is what is drying them, yes, they feel more crunchy. They always smell great though! Tip: Hang tops by their bottoms and bottoms by their tops. Ideas for videos: Flylady in a Trailer? how meal planning has changed? Yes, updates on the renovations. Future plans? And who cuts all that lawn? Wow. Love your videos. you have a plate full! Enjoy life.

What an adventure! We traveled in a camper for a year when we were raising our two grandchildren. We went everywhere and home schooled....1st and 2nd grade. Number 1 thing we learned? We did not need all the stuff! Especially clothing! From then on we simplified our lives!

  • @Michelle_Myers

We always put a rug/mat in under the steps of our camper. Helps eliminate dirt by taking the shoes off before stepping on the mat. Also be careful when using water because your gray tank will fill up fast. We also have a portable tank to empty the “black” tank so we didn’t have to move the camper every time is needed to be drained. The gray water tank just have a long discharge hose & empty it along ways away from the camper so you don’t get the smell when it gets hot out. When showering just wet yourself turn off water soap up the turn water on to rinse off. Grey tank won’t get as full too fast by doing this. Unless your still able to shower & stuff in the house some of these tips won’t matter. We lived on our camper for 6 months while rebuilding our house after the historic 2011 flood in North Dakota. I can’t wait to see how your house remodel turns out!

So exciting, house looks cool already! Best campsite ever. I’m Canadian, from Manitoba but l live in New Zealand, hanging clothes on the line outside is what most people do. It’s a bit more work but your right it’s way better for the planet. In winter we use our dryer more because of so much rain and the sun isn’t real strong but we also have a fire so we put laundry on a rack by it to dry also. My step mom used to dry clothes outside in the winter in Canada by letting it freeze, if I remember right! I would love to see updates of your house project and whatever else you feel inspired to do 🦋🌈☀️🌺

Has everyone already given you laundry hanging advice? If so, ignore me! I have a very similar washing line, just like I grew up with in NZ. Hanging clothes by the bottom hem is my preference - the clothespins can leave marks in the shoulders that are really obvious and the underarms don’t get much air or sun. I also learned to hang things with a clothes peg shared between them - faster to take down if rain comes in and you need fewer pegs and less space, but that’s just a habit. I heard that if things dry really fast they’ll be stiff, if there’s wind they flap around and it keeps them softer. Shaking things out with a good hard -snap- as you remove them and fold them helps and is very satisfying. Towels are less crunchy if you give them 10 minutes or so in the dryer before you hang them. Line drying is so good though, and you can pre-sort clothes as you hang or remove them. I try to hang things based on how I’ll store them, all hubby’s tees together, socks paired together, etc.

I love the feel of non drier clothes. So much that I hang my clothes on a pole thing in my apartment. What I call a hard towel is so much better to dry my self with because a soft towel just moves the water around. Plus it makes it easier because I have one less step. I used to have to gather, sort, wash, dry, put away, now it's wash hang up and put away. No more putting dirty on clean because I didn't get the last step done.

Robin, may be a good resource to help you get through this reno. Oh and Kallie, of But First, Coffee - they did a kitchen/living space/bathroom reno with two young children, so she may have helpful tips for cooking. Thankfully, it's summer so you have the blessing of outdoor fun and grilling! Be sure to take appropriate bear precautions and bear proof your camp! You will be making lifetime memories this summer, that is for sure!

Wow! Go you! It could be fun camping out all summer! The kids will love it! I always line dry in the drier months but I think most Australians do. It's alot more hygienic and one great plus to it is that the sun works like a bleach on stains! Have a white shirt with food stains? Soak as usual or spray, whatever you use and then hang it out in full sun. The stain disappears like magic! Decent size caravan you got there! Have fun, i know its got to be hard but make the most of the season and I wish you all the best with the reno!

That clothesline is so cool! I need to get one like that, it looks like it would fit better in our yard than a normal, straight clothesline. You should consider getting a collapsible wagon for hauling all that laundry and garbage to the house! Sure would make it easier, and the kids could even help pull it.

My parents have the same one, it's great, it spins around in the wind. And you can "close" it like an umbrella if you need to store it in a shed during winter. Greetings from Sweden! :)

Umbrella style clotheslines are the best! They hold a LOT (2-4 loads) spin in the wind and the one I have can easily be removed for mowing the yard or for winter like Rebecka said. I think the brand name is Babrantia ? It’s a UK brand but I got it in the US.

In our camper to save on propane my dad installed a converter switch so our water heater used electric or propane. We live in Texas so our summer temps are typically 100+ degrees out. We would cook most meals outside to avoid heating up the camper. Wishing you the best in the Reno! How exciting it must be!

The drying outside does make it crunchy but put a still damp towel in the dryer with the cloth for about 10 minutes in the dryer and it will soft it and remove some of the dust from outside. Now that I have to dry my clothes inside on hangers it doesn't get crunchy 🙃. Still air dry with inside air though 😅 🙃 😐.

Hi Steph, I’m a Canadian living in Denmark. I’m an empty nester. There are a lot of people living in trailers this summer for vacation and otherwise. Me included. We are heading to Scotland and Wales. I live with a lot less in my trailer than my home. Perhaps a video talking about the things and conveniences you miss and those you are surprised you don’t. BTW I try to dry all my laundry on the line we haven’t in our garden. I only miss when the weather doesn’t co-operate. Nothing like fresh bedding off the line. The sun is an awesome bleach substitute!

Good choice for hanging laundry outside. I do it my hole life like that. Even in snow winters. There are only a view rules. Kräftig ausschütteln before hanging up. And at really sunny days in summer clothes or towels bekome hard. So hang it up in the early morning or late afternoon. This helps colours to be fresh and not to bleach.

Living in Australia in a house with yard, the clothesline outside is used for every load unless the weather doesn't permit it. I have a few drying racks in my laundry to hang shirts on hangers and some folding ones for wet weather. I only use my dryer a few times a year.

You’re very inspirational though and I was so happy to see your video this morning! Even though the house is down to bare bones, it looks great. I’m sure it will be a masterpiece and as for the current home(trailer) having enough space for prolonged periods of time is essential. You are doing GREAT, keep it up momma!❤️

🌤👖👕🩳 Growing up we dried our clothes outside during the summer and clear days. In the warmest weather we tried to do clothes earlier or later in the day before the sun was too harsh. Also I remember using vinegar in the last rinse to keep fibers soft. I use vinegar on my linens still today and towels do seem softer. We also lived in the dryer western part of Kansas and Nebraska and Colorado. Now in Utah it’s very dry and take no time at all for rugs to dry, and clothes dry quickly indoors too. May need to get a clothes line again. 😁

What an amazing transformation! Thanks for sharing those real-life moments, as always! As a kid growing up on a farm, we hung clothes to dry on the clothesline whenever the weather permitted. On windy days, they aren’t so crunchy! :) However, I hope you learn to love the benefits of it- they smell SO good, like clean nothingness! And I always think towels are more absorbent after drying on the line than in the dryer. I can’t wait to hear more about your life in the trailer, especially how your routines change with this living space!

Omg in 1980s (south africa) my Mom always taught me to hang the underwear on the inside racks too. In australia people hang stuff out too. All the youtubers i watch from US and yourself always use dryers. Interested to know why outside drying is not done even in summer? The kids would be loving camper life. Whenever we go away I really like washing up the exact number of plates etx we need, only having one small box of toys to share. Cleaning is so quick and easy!

If you pull the clothes from the line while they are still just a tad damp and tumble them to finish drying the fluff right up and you've cut way down on dryer time! If you let them dry on the line completely you can just throw a damp towel in the dryer. I mostly do this to kill of pollen that may have gotten on our clothes (helps with allergies) but it's also nice to not have crunchy towels. Also, the dryer does a much better job at getting rid of the cat hair on our clothes lol

I only use a clothes line to dry my clothes. The clothes would have been a bit crunchy because it was warm and they dried too quickly. When they dry more slowly (a few hours) they are soft and smell great. I Australia we use a hills hoist, which is a bigger version of your clothes line. They are a permanent fixture though.

If the stiffness in the clothes is too much, you can run them in the dryer for just a few minutes and it will work itself out. Also, some items you can flap them a few times and the stiffness will release.
