    I enjoy your videos but I wish you'd shoot shots like this with something less than $6000.00 worth of equipment. Something like a Sony A6500, 24" Octabox , and speed light.

    Light is light. If you try what Miguel is doing, you would have to adjust very little, even with an entry level camera, to achieve similar results. The gear is not important. Pay attention to the technique.

    Actually, common sense would tell you that it's a light and a light modifier (one light setup). It really IS a simple setup. You actually could get a BUFF Octa a bit smaller than that, load it with speedlights, and do the SAME exact thing. That being said you could get a vagabond, a white lightning from Alien Bee with even more light, not have to use HSS, over power the sun for way less than the setup he had. The only difference here is that it's profoto, nothing more. Not sure why you all are bitching and crying. Use a bit of common sense. This had nothing to do with strobe type, there was nothing special about that strobe vs a godox 600, Broncolor, or a wired light like an AB. Stop the crying.

    The camera isn’t as important as the lens and the modifier. And a Godox AD200 with a Glow 36” Octa will cost well under $500. Grab a good lens and you can absolutely create photos that look like this.

    Hi Miguel, I have a question which I hope you can help with? I recently did a shoot similar with the green background and also under green trees, how would you compensate or edit to remove green lighting/shadows from your subject? This has been plaguing me for sometime and hope you may have time to answer. Thanks from Australia :)

    you said you shot at f2.0, 1/160 and ISO 100. I am going to assume that was your metering for the ambient light. Your model appears to be mostly in the shade. You then adjusted the strobe to give you enough output to light up her face just enough to remove any shadows but keeping the background from going dark.

    A 5 foot octabox is almost a compulsory bit of kit these days and it does give a beautiful soft light that I love. But I'm finding I'm being unfaithful, at least in thought, and I keep taking sneaky peaks at large parabolic umbrellas. I know the light is different from the umbrella, more specular and crisper, but it's drawing me in.

  • @crollinsphoto

    I almost never shoot more open than f. 5.6, particularly for headshots. I can easily blur the background in post, but usually i like some blur, but not too much so that there's still a sense of place and context.

    I would have loved to hear more about your actual method of metering the situation. You mentioned your settings.... was that the ambient reading? Also, how did you come up with the right setting for the flash? Was it just trial and error?

  • @kgnash

    @kgnash

    With the Profoto B1 and B2 Air Remote (Sony, Canon or Nikon), you can meter off the background. Then shoot a frame with her face filling the frame and the strobe on TTL. Switch Remote mode to manual and adjust background exposure via shutter speed. Perfect exposure.

  • @kgnash

    He showed his camera settings, but he never mentioned the lighting! Was it metered with a light meter, manually adjusted with a few test shots or TTL. Also, I see no real reason (other than to keep the math simple) that he decided to shoot at f/2.0 rather than f1.8. It couldn't make a very noticeable difference.

  • @EDCGadgets

    @EDCGadgets

    For headshots you can place the softbox close to the subject, and that allows using very low ratio, and gives a very soft, natural fill. In most situations you can get away with 1/64 or 1/128, that will look completely natural in a late afternoon shot. But it all depends on the ambient light, the size of the modifier and the power of your flash of course.

    Just my thoughts..... I feel far too many photographers shoot too wide open for portraits. I believe his shooting at F2 was still too shallow for this model, and it helped (not in a good way) the light wash out her blond hair. I would have loved to see this done using F5 and pull her away from the background (will help create the same basic washed yet not featureless background). I believe shooting at F5 would bring more definition to her hair and not have it wash out like it was. At first I thought it was blown, but think it is really just out of focus too much (for my taste) which on blonds (or those with gray or white hair as well) can LOOK like it is blown. That is not as much of an issue with darker hair. I think this setup and settings (as he used) would have worked great with a model with darker hair though. And yes.... less talk, more shooting.
