Peter has dozens of tips to help make average, every day people look their absolute best simply by precisely positioning their face and body and eliciting a real human emotion. Making people feel comfortable and confident in front of your camera is one of the hardest skill sets to have, and Peter has perfecting this technique.
If you are shooting professionally or are just a part time photographer, this tutorial will teach you how to make the best possible headshots of anyone regardless if you are shooting outside with natural light or are inside a small studio with strobes or constant lights.

That final line "who's going to take them? YOU!" is so important for anyone in any profession. The more you believe in that, the stronger you will be. For instance, I teach ballroom dance, people want to learn how to dance, whose going to teach them? Me! If we all said this to ourselves, we would all be more successful.

I'm curious, how did you come to this conclusion? This kind of putdown is so common, you have to wonder where it's coming from. Jealousy? Narrow-mindedness? If it's from Expertise, then let's hear it. Let's hear the objective criticism or else it'd be safe to dismiss your statement as a "typical KZread comment. Empty and therefore useless."

To be fair, Peter's clients have changed from your average Joe to the top CEOs, entrepreneurs, tv personalities, actors, corporation employees, etc. Yes $3000 a headshot is insane for most markets but Peter has been able to work his way up to the very top in the top most market. A few years ago he used to be $1100 a session and many of his associates in other parts of the world shoot at $300 - $700 a sesson. He talks about this in the marketing section. I bet Vancouver is a pretty good photography market.

Well you could take thousands and never figure out that there are these things on the face: eyes, eyebrows, mouth...all of which can move and make various expressions. Look at the portfolios out there. Most of them, the people all have the same deadpan look, no variation in affect whatsoever. He's pointing out things in a few minutes that some photogs figure out in years, or never figure out at all. Dunning-Kruger effect is rampant in photography.

but, arent you getting distortion having them like only 5 feet away from your cam? Regardless if its a 200mm lens?

  • @FStoppers

The distortion is a good feature though. Peter's images used to be even more distorted back in his Hasselblad days but if you look at a photo taken at 100mm vs 200mm (which requires stepping back), the 200mm sometimes looks a bit unnatural and flat. 50mm might be too warped but around 85-130mm, something interesting happens. -P

For someone starting out, what lighting system would you purchase. Lets say my budget is Less than $1000. Also are these headshots done with a 35mm lens. You are so close to your subjects.

The most money Hurley is making is giving these classes. He might have a few $3000 clients that he worked his way up, but in todays market, you can start at $125, because the market will dictate it, and the masses pay for "good enough". I can almost guarantee you will not take headshots for $3K. But I can also guarantee that you will take many $200 or less. And , I dont really know what headshot a client would need at 3K!

Damn, he charge $3k now, i still remember he said hes charging for $1100 almost 2 years ago. Thats fast, better raise up my price on my headshot, lmao..... Just kidding, i am no body, just a fan of his craft.

This is hardly a tutorial, it' more of a commercial. Seek real advice? Have a look at the Sean Tucker Channel here on YT, e.g. corporate headshots. Just great. Also a good choice: see Picture Perfect Posing: Practicing the Art of Posing for Photographers and Models by Roberto Valenzuela

This isn’t the tutorial though. They even simply said that his last tutorial was four hours long and this next one would be closer to 10. So maybe if you actually watched and paid attention to the video, you wouldn’t be so jealous of actual talent, just saying.
