Daniel, You are blessed for sharing this with the world of the new and up and coming photographers. And you really don't have to spend the big bucks on Profoto to get the same results. You can rig up your own hand held TTL Speed-lights at a fraction of the cost of Profoto and get the same results. Beautiful Job! Back in the 1980's, I paid thousands of dollars at the School of Visual Arts to learn these very same lighting techniques. And back then, we did it with the limitations of Film. We also used Polaroid film backs on our cameras In order to get the instant results we needed. Keep up the good work!
What a lovely young lady and what great shots. Nice job! Great short video to the point.
Thank you, Daniel, Sharinna, and team!
Let the world be your studio! Lovely beauty shots! :) :)
the shots at the castle looked the best . colors and contrast build very attractive composition

Great video, love your work Daniel!
What a beautiful model! Great video!
Quality results as always Daniel.. Thumbs Up!
Stunning model and pictures, great location work
This is some really good headshot photography, images look tack sharp and naturally vibrant. Lighting of the face looks great as well.
Great job...enjoyed your video as always!
She's got a very beautiful smile :D
The shot with the blue backlight was beautiful
Gorgeous and very welldone!
Those turned out really nice!
Had to check if my speed was on 1.25x. it was not. lol, great tips Daniel! Love the speed
Balancing forground and background light....well done...!!!

Great work boys and girls .

Great pictures from a master ! Many Thanks to all the team, nice job ! Nice to see how you use some devices in any situations. May be you could add some exif informations about the picture you've taken and you show us, like the f/ , speed , zoom etc ... I love to see you videos, I'm still learning a lot of things thank to this channel.

Thanks for the kind words, I am getting a few requests for technical specs, I will try and add some in future videos. In this case, I am shooting around F2.8-F4 at 100 ISO and setting the shutter speed at various settings to control the ambient light.
wow she speaks good English. got here cause I like her Mom. beautiful found pride here. God bless her .
she amazing and want to see her more....
Great video!
Nicely done - Out door is my fav place to do headshot & portraits - Not easy buy great results - BABAK Photo
The backlit images shot against the steps are just so gorgeous and make me want to grab a friend and get outside now! Saying that, I currently use speedlights, and in my home studio (the wall in my living room) they are fine if I'm shooting at lower power. I'm hoping to get outside soon to do some headshots but am concerned about the lack of power and the recycle times. I'll see how it goes when I do, but do you have any advice on portable/mains powered strobes? I'm in the UK and can't justify paying lots of cash at this time. Would just like somewhere to start my research. Cheers, Rod.
Pretty model (Sharina?), great head shots with out-of- focus backgrounds on location with some fill flash...
Nice job and beautiful model.
well done :-) charming model !
Thanks a lot for the explanations and the photos. It would help more if you include data like camera, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter, ISO.

ISO is probably 100 or so b/c he's outside. He's using a long ass Canon lens attached to a Canon 5D. He's using a wide aperture, look at his backgrounds.
Love the photos. But did I miss you sharing your settings on the camera?
These are stunning! Good work to both the photographer and model! :)
Daniel, this was a great tutorial! I am learning OCF, now I need to learn how to set my camera to mix the ambient lighting with the OCF. Did you use TTL on the flash after you set your camera for the ambient light?
@Crazy_Dashcam_Videos

He said he used TTL
Great video as always Daniel...except for that beard...!! It's impossible to take a bad shot of Sharinna, she's stunning!!
Great job
Beautiful. I'm getting really tired of and often frustrated by having to depend solely on natural light for portraits, but I'm not all that confident with lighting, most particularly on-location. Like to keep it super simple and clean like these images - do you do any workshops or provide any type of instruction outside of these videos? Also would be helpful to always include an equipment list, and specs help too. If you did and I missed it, sorry. Thanks!

@@gerardorodriguez7858 make some test shots with the exposure for the background because sometimes a slight underexposure of "-0.3" or "-0.7" ("+/- Exposure compensation) can deliver a more "dramatic" background
@jamilgotcher365
Жыл бұрын
@@MrJueKa I exposed the shot for the actor's face instead of the background and I ended up liking the lighter over exposed background better than the original one I was trying for, had a cleaner look.
You mentioned the 2' x 3' soft box, thanks. Could you share the size of the strip box? Thanks for a great video. Exactly what I was looking for.
Nice shots, your use of the lighting was a good learning lesson. But,,, you never mentioned your camera settings for the shots. Could you PLEASE give us your camera settings for your pictures in future videos. I am trying to learn how to shoot in manual. I need the basic setting for the shots.
Thanks for the video. It's nice to see my new 5D4 with a 70-200 in use by a pro. I assume that you shot at 2.8? Did you microadjust the lens? My 85/1.2 was way off and needed significant adjustment.
@DanielNortonPhotographer
7 жыл бұрын
I mostly shot wide open, yes. Since it was a rental camera, I did not micro adjust, but the focus seemed good.
Nice one Daniel
Love this video so much. Can I share it?
good looking results, well done ! once you have understood the basic principle of flash photography, which is not as difficult as is often assumed, it`s no rocket science, then there are hardly any limits to personal creativity and it can be very exciting 4:06 = this is a good trick in portrait photography, counting down from 1 to 5 and taking photos while you are doing it, the photo on "1", on which the model is concentrating the most, is no longer necessary in most cases, all of this often can deliver very natural looking portraits
Great Video. Also is there a link to these photographs?
nicely taken, good luck
The photos are amazing but I think that it is over exposure

Does the b2 use ttl from the camera or do you use a light meter?
Dan you are just full of awesomeness!!
Beautiful smile she's got.
hey, impressive video! have a great day :D
OMG! What a nice model! Thanks for this video
Great video. Camera? Lens?
very nice!
Photography looks amazing I will copy this, great headshots great advice but this doesn't look like natural light, it looks lit.
sherina is charitins daughter..es una preciosidad madre e hija..
Question, how do you power your light when you’re outside??
What settings did you use?
It would be nice if you would also share some settings of each shot to demonstrate the adjustments in power or exposure with the flash, UNLESS you used ETTL..
More Sharinna Please

how do you get to be this good with all this expensive equipment?
@DanielNortonPhotographer
7 жыл бұрын
Think of equipment (especially lighting) as a long term investment, use the budget you have to get the best gear you can afford and upgrade as your business grows. You can make great images with simple gear, the most expensive stuff just makes it easier in the long run.

Daniel Norton Photographer That is really helpful thank you
@90grains

There is a great deal of truth in your statement. It is unfortunate that quatie and others think you have to have your gear to get those shots. You don't! Adorama sells flashes / speedlights that are affordable and can be matched with modifiers to achieve the look you captured without breaking the bank.

Big budget vs Small budget it doesn't matter. I can give the worst photographer thousands of dollars to buy great equipment and it will come out just like garbage, there are plenty of garbage photographers that everyone praises and shouldn't be praising. People need to learn a few things, Composition - light metering (correct exposure) then the rest will come naturally. A canon t6i + 85mm 1.4 rokinon , and you can beat the pants off the worst photographer with a sony a7r ii or hasselblad with expensive profoto lighting. TRUST ME ON THIS I've seen it!
Nice, I guess if you had used the Profit B1 strobe it would have been overkill or would the only drawback be having to put the light on a stand vs having your assistant handhold the strobe?
@DanielNortonPhotographer
7 жыл бұрын
Knowing I was going to be running around all day, I chose the B2 over the B1 due to the size/weight. I knew as well I was likely going to keep her in the shade so I wouldn't need the extra stop of light for balance.
Question, Daniel: what ratio between background and face fill did you generally go for in this series? 1:1 or thereabouts? I can see that you vary it from shot to shot.
@DanielNortonPhotographer
7 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the color of the background and the model's skin tone/hair, but a good starting point is to keep the background roughly 1 stop brighter than the subject or the images will begin to feel "lit"

I'm typically staying pretty open on these, 2.8 to 4 range. I don't like to do much if any retouching on head shots, but I do shoot raw, so I tweak the color balance and make slight exposure adjustments as needed.
Good job Daniel. One thing, it's not like I have a pro photo light and soft box with an assistant with me as I walk around central park :-). Although it's good to get inspiration, for the average photographer I don't think this is practical.

A friend with a speedlight in a softbox could also be used, just keep in mind your recycle will be much slower and you may not be able to overpower the sun in certain situations.

Ed, have you seen the Flashpoint Streaklights on Adorama? Medium flashes in 180 and 360 Watt versions. Portable and powerful. They even offer accessory packages with diffusers for less than $1000. (Totally unsolicited endorsement; I just bought a Streaklight and am very happy with it.)
4.54 is epic :D
How did you determine the exposure for the flash?
What camera are you shooting with
very well done! I hope she was able to get some work!
3/4 Shots which lens did you use?
Oh gawd over doing it with the flash
She's fucking stunning.
Nice pictures. But, it would be nice if you slow down and explain what you are doing, like camera, lens, set up ISO, F, speed, type of light etc. and post the setting on the screen
Doing this type of shooting in New York do you need a Permit to do it
Why have so many locations, when on most background images almost completely blurred? Light stains can be easily "draw" on a studio background.

While I often shoot in my studio, I find being on location helps set a different vibe to the session. Also, not everyone watching will have access to a studio.

"Also, not everyone watching will have access to a studio." But almost everyone has a couple of soft boxes and a set of flashlights with HSS synchronizers: D Thanks for the reply, I understood you)
is sherina on the west coast????
"multipoints model"!!!! . . hair forehead, eyes, cheeks, lips chin, skin, body!!!! . . and shes a photo editor too!
Did you need a permit to use ocf in Central Park?
Sharinna is lovely and adorable. The sad thing about holding a light and using TTL or even manual mode when the light is held it is not good at keeping the density of images consistent. Some were too light some were dead on. I know these could be repaired in post processing. It always looks a little less pro. Keep up the good work though.
What trigger is he using?

What happen if you are on your own? You are screwed....
@DanielNortonPhotographer
7 жыл бұрын
You could bring along a stand to put you light on if you don't have a friend to help, though in most cases, if I am on my own instead of lighting I'll look for a spot with nice open shade and reflected light. This of course limits your choices as you need to work where the light is best, the flash equipment allows me to work anywhere at any time to get the results I need. I use open shade in OnSet 47 - street photography, where I make a portrait in the shade of a scaffold. The key is to use what you have to your best advantage.

Shooting on your own with stands in the city is tough as we are all aware of the regulations of what can and cannot be placed on the ground. You have to be ninja like to shoot solo especially if you're going to light it up properly.
epic hairdo on danny
Name of song
I would use foliage as my background not a flight of stairs.
That woman is quite attractive IMO
She'd make pictures from a potato look great.
most of us don't have 2-3 helpers tho xD
too much flash for my taste - only a few were very nicely done
@snoobaroo2000

I thought the same. If I can, I will use mostly natural lighting when outdoors. I find that the flash can sometimes make the pictures look fake an artificial.
Tiene un buen equipo, tiene asistentes, una hermosa modelo y le cruza los troncos por detrás de la cabeza...?? Mi Dios....cualquiera hoy se cree fotógrafo y hasta dá clases.
I was going to post and ask if all these pix were meant to be over-exposed (and washed out), or maybe it was just the brightness settings on my computer? But a bunch of people have already commented on that so I guess there's no need. Style issue, mistake or was the Profoto B2 feeling inadequate and just trying to live up to it's older brother the D2 by over-firing like a maniac? lol
Yes, fine, but I think, that less light could be better? Its seems to me to be too strong, brutal :-))
some look over exposed
For who are you making pictures like these, without the focus on a dress or something like that. Who needs pictures only about a model´s face? :)

Noobs? :D Dude... You are the king of photography, right? :D :D You can achieve really cool shots with wideangle lenses, used right. For a tight headshots, of course, longer focal lengths. But it all depends on the model, the location etc...
@bethaniesteph472

Don't agree. It can be done with wide angle lens.
@WaqasNasir

Tino Schulz it is not about who is good or bad and giving personal remarks to others .... longer focal lengths give better background compression ... physics law .. so people who like heavy bokeh pictures and want the subject to really stand out .. they use longer lenses ... else u can continue using your mobile phones for portraits and they are very well capable especially iphone 7 plus ..
