    Skip the trendy, expensive fridge. For a pop of color (which is always fun) maybe choose colorful small appliances for the counter or a colorful small dining table/chairs since those are much easier and cheaper to replace. Both of those might look best with a more modern kitchen style.

    My first thought was that you could turn whatever fridge you buy/have into a fun art project. Maybe emulate a certain artist's style. Do you like Banksy's stuff or Shepard Fairey's "OBEY" work? Make your own version of their style, but on your fridge. Or even just Jackson Pollock style with a black or white background base color with splashes of bright paint over it. No matter what, it would be the centerpiece of the room!

    Since Scotland’s winters can be quite chilly, I would recommend enclosing your shower fully with glass to keep the steam in and keep you warm while you shower. The open showers look great but just try opening the door or pulling back the curtain when you’re in your shower next time and you’ll very quickly want to close it again!

    I have one thing to say about the garden, or anywhere, if you have stairs, have handrails! You've already fallen on your own stairs even though they do have handrails, but it becomes important to have them as people age, or if they have any kind of mobility problems due to arthritis, injury, etc. And they can be stylish looking. Also, cats will climb over fences and wander. There are fences that don't allow a cat to jump out and also prevent other critters from climbing in. Personally, and because you're in Scotland with dark winters, I'd go for light colors and if you enjoy it, mixing vintage or antique things with modern things - it's a fun mixture.

    It's a matter of opinion and the size of the kitchen AND the available light in the kitchen. We went with In The Navy (navy blue) by Sherwin Williams and we love it. Everyone that walks in raves over it. And it's not a trend, some kitchens have a dark walnut finish or even black. You have to balance it with the flooring and lighting.

    @@Patchy Scandinavian kitchens are almost always cosy year round, regardless of style. It’s more about candles in winter, the food you cook there, and having a decent dining table to sit around. The latter may not work in this size kitchen-living combo, but even so, it’s the functionality of being able to sit somewhere warm where you can sip tea and eat cookies while you talk for hours.

  • @aliplay5

    @@Patchy I think modern can look cosy when it's done in wood, so simple lines and geometric shapes but wood for the cabinets instead of white or black only, the warmth and the texture bring the cosy in. More pricey for good quality though instead of plain color laminate.

    I enjoy your projects and videos! My humble input: Traditional kitchen would fit the environs around the house and the window views. Also, though you might think this too matchy-matchy, cabinets that match or blend with your interior doors would create a nice, harmonizing thread throughout your house. (Envision the light wood with some whitewashing in the curves of the wood panels.) Give yourself economical options for pops of color with accessories like chair pads, window treatments, counter top kitchen "stuff", seasonal flowers and plants versus expensive appliances with long life cycles (then you're stuck with the same pop of color).

It makes such a difference to what you can do in a room because you don't have to take into account the door opening into the room. I actually like the kitchen doors you have and regret choosing a creamy white colour because it shows its age more quickly - wear and tear is harder to disguise. I love the house! It's got a lot of potential. I'm not crazy about the shower glass wall. I prefer an enclosed shower, not just a single wall. When the water hits you, it ricochets off in many directions and you get droplets flying everywhere. Also, I think the Smeg appliances are adorable but way overpriced.

  • @Patchy

    @Patchy

    The appeal of the single wall is that (I think) it would be much easier to keep clean? Enclosed showers have so many little nooks and crannies that you have to get into which is why I was keen for this layout. And likewise on the Smeg front! Might just get a toaster or kettle from them instead of a big ole fridge.

    George Dunnett, you need to look into non-tile shower wall materials! There is a class of man-materials called Solid Surface. These are composite materials that have the same coloring and materials through-and-through. The advantage they have is they will look good longer than you do, they may outlive you, and they are repairable in place if they ever get scratched or chipped. Here in the States brand names are Corian and Swanstone. My shower is a newer brand, called Transolid and we had our tub removed in 2018 and replaced with a shower. It is waterproof, of course, but also does not mold or mildew. No grout lines. I have caulking in the joints where the walls meet and this is covered with Transolid cove molding. The only caulk visible is between the bottom of the wall and the top of the shower pan. I have to scrub my shower pan every month or so because it has grooves for traction and water collected there can cause a slime mold to grow, but I have NEVER washed the walls. Easy peasy. It is more expensive up front, but will last, looking good, waterproof, for my lifetime. If your home is not super insulated and tight, an open shower can be drafty. A heavy canvas shower curtain can go in the washing machine regularly. Then no glass to clean, either.

    Few things to consider ...... Sliding or barn door for the rooms. The swing of a normal door removes wall and floor space that is usable as it needs to be clear for the door. You get this space back and have more usable space. The doors can slide behind things like shelving. When you raise the roof you could extend it to also cover the seating area of the patio. Put a wall and doors up for the inside of the house but this could let you put roof mounted patio heaters and use the patio regardless of weather. Imagine a rainy chilly day but the patio is covered and heated and you sit with a blanket. I am not talking about the 2nd patio in the green space but the one touching the house. A big thing is to not forget to put extra "hidden" spots for hooking up things like garden hozes and plugging in any tools you may want to use in the garden. It is very long and rectangular so having a hidden plug / outlet and not having to run a cord or hoze the whole way across may come in handy as once you add more plants and fixtures in the garden it could be a bit of pain going around it all when doing work. If you are going to redo the space then take the chance to run some water and electric plugs. I would also advise putting up posts for sunshades in the garden. You can hide them but have them if you need to. This could avoid burning of grass in a heat wave, let you put up a hammock and the sunshades also help it be more comfy to sit in the garden and not get a sunburn. The shades are easy to remove and you can change them out to suit your theme. It is a good and cheap backup. When removed and the posts well hidden..... it is like it does not exist at all. If there is no window or a room only gets natural light part of the day you can use a suntube to get natural light into the room all day. The path to the 2nd patio in the green space is stones and dirt. If it rains hard you are going to get that dirt all over your stones and patio. Just something to think about as it is more work to be done to keep it looking perfect. You could do things like a rock garden for the path to avoid the mess and put a dirt garden in another spot. It depends on personal preference. Personally less cleaning is always nice.

    Love love this vid! The creek makes me envious! Play that up for certain! Here are my suggestions: 1. Same flooring throughout the space in a warm mid tone. Unites & enlarges. Use rugs to define spaces. 2.let how you want to feel in each space define your design. Start with color & how a color makes you feel & build a palette around that. Use upholstery/drapery fabric samples to help. Use the most neutral of your palette for walls. 3. Define the focal points of your room. In your living area you definitely want to draw attention to your magnificent outdoor area. 4. Plant for year round color & interest. For Scotland I don’t know what that is … but give yourself color & interest year round. 5. Personal preference: incorporate nod to the age of the house. How inspiring to live in a building that possibly has stood 400 yrs and provided a home for countless people!

    For the refrigerator, you could always get a white one (of any brand) and paint it whatever color you want to give the room that pop of color you desire. My only argument about the trend of modern living spaces is that at one point or another it will look dated anyway, so do what you want, just make sure there is a way to work storage into the bedrooms and kitchen.

    Modern is ugly, poor taste materialism, cheap and ruined. Zubir, yuk, why is he popularizing cheap junk furniture? Sigh. I sometimes wonder if this is all ads/trendsetting (in the wrong direction) nvm. Only natural materials, stone, bricks, wood or reclaimed wood with antique, vintage and handcrafted furniture is beautiful and worthy. Scenic paintings, homemade curtains, made with love and helps grow your aura (health), true physics. Fiber sellers no thank you. Real men are craftsmen, they use their hands to build and create works of art, wisely choosing natural, traditional materials, and they plant and design permaculture gardens with chickens, a rooster, cows and horses and lovingly care for them and their family. Real men also sail on boats and do other man things. That have nothing to do w/purchasing ready made mass produced corp. junk. Who is putting you up to this unfortunate trendsetting? that is bad for humankind and nature. We are losing real men and everything that matters. Please don't hire cheap people, fake men to install ugly made in china or ikea slave labor (low wage) chemical mass produced (corporate/nwo) furniture that is also bad for our aura and the environment. Tears. Such a beautiful traditional village only real things please. Millions or billions of humans supporting corp. junk, including corp. junk food, is a tragic malpractice and a great loss of tradition, health and sovereignty.

Then, when the kitchen gets too hot (or, heaven forbid, smoky) we can open the roof window and let out the heat and smoke. It is the light that I notice every day, though. Even with it on the north side of the house, it makes the kitchen feel so much bigger and more inviting. Spring for the electric opener, though. We have to hide the crank to reach the window to open it behind our couch!

    I agree with the dining table being the separation piece between the open plan space. I would go for either a Laminate flooring/tiled flooring throughout that looks like timber, you’d be surprised with how realistic it is nowadays. The kitchen colour will be important in how it correlates with your walls. I’ve seen some comments how you want a modern kitchen but have a traditional feel throughout, I think the opposite wall you could do some simple panelling painted in an accent colour. And then for your kitchen, do a two tone, lower can be timber, countertop - a nice granite or quartz and the your top cabinets can match the opposite accent wall colour. Pair the sitting room with a large rug but if it’s going to be used as a mat from coming from the garden make sure it is a dark colour. And depending on how high the wall is make sure the console table is at least a foot higher than the coffee table. Loving the content, have just watch 4 straight vids!!
