LYRICS
I don't want to understand this horror
there's a weight in your eyes
I can admit
everybody ends up here in bottles
but the name tag's the last thing you wanted
as the world explodes
Fall out of it
and we can't let go
because this will not go away
there's a house built out in space
I can't see that thief
that lives inside of your head
but I can be some courage at
the side of you bed
I don't know what's happening
and I can't pretend
but I can be your, be your
someone help us understand
who ordered this disgusting
arrangement, time and the end
I don't want to hear who walked
on water, because the hallways are empty
clocks tick
as the world implodes
we fall into it
and we can't go home
because this will not go away
there's a house built out in space
I can’t see that thief
that lives inside of your head
but I can be some courage at
the side of you bed
I don't know what's happening
and I can't pretend
it's a long, long get away
it's a long, long get away
make it home again
make it home again
it's a long, long get away
it's a long, long get away
I can’t see that thief
that lives inside of your head
but I can be some courage at
the side of you bed
I don't know what's happening
and I can't pretend
but I can be your, be your [I’m here]
And I can be you, be your [I’m here]
It’s a long, long get away

I just started listening to their older music again, and i swear this album was a god send....especially now that its celebrating its 25 year anniversary...some of the songs on this album, including this one, is definitive on describing the mental health the world has been facing the last few years. Makes me happy that i can go back into time and find songs like this one, as well as others, that describe our current situation, and provide some love and such. Much appreciated ❤❤

My mom's mental health and growing up with her suicide attempts, gradually increasing severity with schizophrenia and her being in and out of institutions, and eventually losing her to suicide just before my oldest son was born, this is what comes to mind with this song. Hits home really hard. I've lost a number of people to mental health issues. I know it is written about cancer, but the lyrics fit very well to mental health as well, in severe cases it is a thief in the head, as you slowly watch someone you love change and turn into something else from it.

this was the only song i could listen to when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. stage 4 and had brain surgery to remove many tumors in his brain. i'm not sure how i stumbled on it 10 years later but i sat in my car for hours and cried to this song and whenever i felt weak or sad or scared or alone i would sit and listen to this song on repeat. my dads "disease free" now a year later which is a miracle but this song holds so much importance and weight and comfort. "i don't want to hear who walked on water" really got me cuz i am normally a believer in God but there is nothing comforting about hearing His plans when His plans make no sense in the moment. beautiful song.

The band revealed that the song was written about a young girl from Kitchener with a cancerous tumor in her brain named Mina Kim. The "thief" mentioned in the song refers to the tumor. The short clip at the end of the song consisting of a young girl singing a Sunday school song is a real audio clip of Mina Kim singing "Little By Little" with Maida's wife Chantal Kreviazuk and band member Jeremy Taggart.

I lost a friend to lung cancer today. We were close friends for a brief period many years ago, but eventually lost touch only to speak from time to time. It's not that she is gone that I remember her. I remember her because she was full of life and died younger than any one should. She died at 25, the same age as me. When I heard the news, I was devastated. Though I've known her for a short time all those years ago, she was still a friend. I immediately thought of this song and have not stopped listening to it. I wasn't there for her like I could've been, but I will miss my memories of her. We all live long and fulfilling lives. Some of us are not graced with that opportunity and she will sadly be missed.

I've loved this song and this band, ever since I first listened to their album Clumsy in 1997. I never knew what this song was actually about until just now, when I saw a video discussing the newest OLP album, and realized I hadn't listened to them in nearly a decade. Now I'm binging all of their music, and then I listen to Thief again. As someone who was diagnosed with a grade IV GBM brain tumor at the beginning of 2020, I finally understand this song in a way I kind of wish I didn't. At the same time, I feel so lucky to have this band, and in particular, this song back in my life again. Right when I needed them most.

I love this song, not just for the great sound ect, ect. but about its message (to me at least). . . Bedside at someone dying and you both know, thats tough, but to know that there is nothing you can do about this person. But all they want is just to talk to someone, to you? thats intense, in a way that is how i feel when listening to this song. Helpless and sad? But I wouldn't be anywhere else for anything in the world. I don't know i have been drinking a bit, but i felt the need to write this.

I thought of her often and when I first saw this music video as a child, my heart sunk to see her name. I knew it was her in my heart as soon as I heard the little tune at the end. I confirmed it was my best friend years later when I looked up her name and OLP. RIP Mina. I’ve missed my friend for a long time.

One of the best shows I went to was seeing OLP for 98 cents due to a scheduling screw up. It was a small venue, and I remember after they played the band came out and just hung out with the crowd. Not only do they make good music, but they are some of the nicest people.

Not heard much from Our Lady Peace in a decade or more. Not sure what happened to this band. If it were ever possible without knowing the dynamics of the band then till now. I'd say this is one major band from the grunge/ rock erra that I so wish would re-descover themselves again. Such a unique well put together sound. Anyone would be lying if they were to say they were'nt waiting to hear OLP kick the radio in there vehicle over at least one more time.. My opinion of course... this band deserved more cred than at that time it recieved.

My nana has been fighting parkinsons for 12 yrs now. Today we are waiting for her to pass, and I cant help to think about this song. How helpless it feels to watch someone be trapped in their own head , and eventually succumb to something they had no control in having. I know this song is about a young girl w brain cancer, but no song has ever been so relatable to me as this one is again today.

OLP's 4 albums from the 90's really have some terrific songs on them. I grew up on them. I lost touch with them afterwards, as I did with many bands from the era (Foo Fighters, Garbage). But it was just such a great, great period. They were all doing such tremendous work.

Their best video, hands down. (and they made some good ones). The emotional wallop of this song hits very hard. This song could easily be interpreted as being about dealing with a loved one who has depression. "I can't see that lives inside of your head." Depression is a thief. And the line "there's a house built out in space" describes the lack of foundation upon which the loved ones perceptions are built. "It's a long getaway, make it home again." The person has left and you hope they come back.

I spent 9 months in an adolescent mental health ward in 2000 for a mental health & developmental diagnosis. I always interpreted the lyrics of the song differently. The thief inside my head was this illness that I had no control over with any sense of normalcy being taken away from me.

Is that supposed to be a recording of Mina Kim at the end? I don't know why but it gives me chills hearing it. EDIT: A QUICK SEARCH, IT IS: "Our Lady Peace said that the song was about a young girl from Kitchener, Ontario named Mina Kim who had a cancerous tumor in her brain. The word thief in the song refers to the tumor and at the end of the song there is a sound clip of a young girl that is actually Mina Kim singing a "Little By Little" with Maida's wife Chantal Kreviazuk."
