Aww thank you Dean! We definitely feel the struggle of building a channel from scratch. We look at other creators success and find a common theme: Many people who are now successful on YT, started making videos for 3-5 years before they made any type of living from it. It starts with passion and enjoying the process of creating and sharing videos. We pour our heart into producing the best possible videos we can, and we know that they will catch more momentum over time, BUT we have to enjoy the process instead of expecting instant results. We DID get monetized in 6 months, from that ONE video - Something I thought would take us a year minimum. We are very thankful for people like you, who appreciate our work, our journey, and genuinely want to see us succeed. Like they say, “anything worth having in life is not supposed to be easy.” ⚡️

Okay. Im a Vermont boy, born amd raised. Only ever used firewood for heat. Im a logger and gunsmith. You may have been told these things. 1: extend your pipe a few feet about the camper for increase draft and safety. 2: You exterior chimney supprt is wood...wood burns..The longer u use it the lower the flash point becomes, the higher likelihood of a fire you risk. Dont burn your house down. 3: Silicone should never be used. It has way to low of a heat rating. It will absolutely burn/melt. Always use fire rated sealant. 4: use a chimney cap. 5: Use a magnetic chimney thermometer tl keep an eye on temps and your risk for chimney fire, especially with all those bends that can collesr creosote. 5: Look for an air tight insulated small stove. It will be exponentially more efficient and heat longer. I like thise portable camp stoves, but they absolutely have their limits. Look as Ashley stoves. 6: Try to burn only hardood if u have access. Reduces creosote and increases BTUs and burn time. 7: Keep having fun!

When we lived in a camper, we made a small shed type thing that went up against the camper and covered the door and a large window. We put the woodstove in the shed. We had more room inside the camper but more importantly, a place to store wood and a place for wet boots and other winter gear.

Love that so much! That was the plan but since we were on a tight budget, we did our best. But that’s DEFINITELY what we would have done differently! That must have been so cozy ✨

you need to have your terminate a minimum of 2' above any obstruction, also when your flue exits the window you could install a t-connection. the long side of the t comes out the window. the bottom side of the cross the t would have a metal plug, the other side goes up to the sky. now the advantage to the t-connection set-up is you can b on the ground, take the plug out and you run your chimneysweeping brush upwards. no need for a ladder and risking a fall. mike

22 years off grid?! That’s awesome Katherine! I’m sure you have learned so much over the years. Do you have any advice for others wanting to live this lifestyle? Thank you for tuning in and taking the time to leave a comment! You are appreciated! 🌲🙏🏼🏔

All I know is that you want to use the highest temp rating silicone on the stove pipes and let it dry. Then do your first test run in the morning that way your not sitting inside the camper, therefore allowing it to air out any kind of any nasty stuff that the stove is giving off. When you guys decide to build a cabin or large sqft house, then you can upgrade to a proper larger cast iron wood stove to hold the heat longer and you can shove in large pieces of logs to help burn over night. You definitely have to have a good seal on the stove pipes to create a nice strong proper draft vacuum, because it will force the air to flow through the front oxygen baffle and front door. So everytime you open the door to load with more wood, the smoke will not leak out the front. It will be forced to go through the chimney pipes. You may also want to consider investing in a couple silky saws of different lengths and sizes, that way when your chainsaw is broken or ran out of fuel, you can keep manually cuttin up wood, and yes the silky katana 1000 can cut trees down!!!

Thank you for the input John! We love when people chime in with their advice and experience. You definitely hit the nail on the head! Having a proper draft is crucial. A larger diameter pipe would have helped with the two elbows. Going straight up and out of the roof will ALWAYS yield the best results. Cast iron stoves are definitely better at retaining heat, but we learned that having firebricks are another crucial piece to ANY wood stove. Even with our little stainless steel stove, we experienced a massive increase in the thermal battery effect of only 4 firebricks. (Two on top of the stove, and two inside the stove, lining the walls) We have learned ALOT from this experience and will definitely have improve our design with another more permanent stove install. We were just stoked to show how it’s possible to create function > form while working on a budget.

i put a winnerwell woodstove in my airstream as well, i went straight thru the roof cause i have a oven that fits on the stove pipe, i love it,its dishwasherfor paper plates and wood utensils, its cook top, and of course heat! cheers from canada.

One of our favorite things about winter is being able to just burn our waste. But Canada winters are the real deal, I can’t even imagine how cold it gets! You just popped up as a suggestion from KZread. This brings me back to when my husband and I lived in a Holiday Rambler from 1984-1987. We started out in Indianapolis in the winter. My husband was still working full time and our septic line froze solid up into the toilet. We were parked in a rental spot in a park. I had to rent a plumber’s snake and free up the line. I cried the whole time with frustration and the disgusting smell. It worked. I survived. We moved south to Georgia where we are from. Now we live in a warehouse we own and we are old. If you work hard you will make it.

Aw thank you!!! A lot of changes have been happening, a big one being that Jason pretty much a gutted the entire trailer and built us a beautiful new kitchen! So look forward in a few months to a lot more food content in every episode. Wow! I’m sure it’s stunning where you are, are you getting lots of snow yet? Guapo is such a gem, I’m so happy you enjoy him 🥰 we got him these booties that are like deflated balloons for his feet, let’s see if they stay on haha.

the tamarack tree trunk is an excelent post but it is wood put some empty soup cans between the flue and the tamarack. three, one near the bottom, one in the middle, and one near the top. Heat dissapation spacers.

You are just a wealth of knowledge! How long have you been using a wood stove?

Automotive grade wool is going to work best anywhere and everywhere and a diesel heater. Well maybe not the Diesel heater it might create moisture, but its fine to use diesel heater under your bed just put a bucket of (Camp Dry). I've camped on the coast of Maine during the winter and you have to remember a mist rain shower of moisture is constantly happening inside your walls (dew). Make sure a drain plug for your walls stays clear to drain. Use electric blankets above and underneath you.

Thank you for the suggestions! We’ve heard great things about diesel heaters, but they do produce moisture just like the propane furnace. Unfortunately, electric blankets are not a viable option when living off grid, unless you have the battery storage to support that energy consumption. Wood heat will always be the best option. Not the cleanest or most fun at times, but definitely the most effective. 🍻 Thank you for watching!

Plow or not your gonna need some chains to make it through the winter. Go to Les Schwab and buy the heavy ‘Link-fit’ truck chains that are intended for off-road. The quick fit cable chains won’t meet the demands of typical forest roads. Agree with others that extending the chimney will create more draft. However, the airstream is such an air tight vehicle outside air source is probably going to be a necessity. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure.

Michael, thank you big time for tuning in, and sharing some of your insight! You’re absolutely right about the chains, although we decided against them since our truck was used weekly to drive an hour into town so Dre could work. Those specific chains, although they would kick ass up here, would have been a nightmare on paved roads. Believe it or not, we managed to survive with No chains! 🤯 We always managed to get back up to our property, but our driveway is so steep, we eventually had to just leave the truck at the bottom of the driveway. 😅

No you’re absolutely right, that footage was from our first major storm on the mountain. The footage you’re watching from our last video was filmed at the end of November, 2021. Which is the same month we started our channel - although we didn’t post our first video until 6 months ago. It truly was our first off grid winter on our property, but we are behind 10 months on our footage. Why you might ask? Because we really live up there full time and editing + posting is incredibly difficult with no power or internet on the property. Getting caught up has created an immense amount of stress from an editing standpoint. We had hundreds of gigabytes of footage before we even started editing 😅

Thanks for the advice Robert! I absolutely wanted to build a “car port” at the minimum, but having literally no money, time, or the right tools, we just had to embrace the suck. To be honest, we stressed big time about a lot of things and having a roof over the trailer was one them. Turns out, it wasn’t a big deal at all, and there were many days spent chillin in boxers because the stove turned the Airstream into a sauna!

It was sooo cozy in the trailer with our little "fire place" - Although there are definitely better models out there now. There is one in particular called the Dweller by Pomoly. We would love to work with them someday!

I resonate with your channel. I've been trying to get my own channel going. I live in a van fulltime with my 3 small dogs and a friend (former partner, but vanlife took a toll on us) I've been needing to install a woodstove or one of the 2 diesel heaters I have in storage. I'm afraid to cut more holes in my van. It was scary enough cutting a hole for the roof fan. Anyway I just found your channel today and I am subscribed now!

@@connectedevolution Hey there! Sorry for the late response, we just had our first child and have been spending the last week in amazement and disbelief of what we accomplished. We had an at home, unassisted, free-birth! Can’t wait to share the video about this experience! We are sorry to hear that can life took a toll on you and your partner. Living in a confined space 24/7 with another person, is not for everyone. My best advice to you, is to build out your van to make it more comfortable and livable - no matter how many holes you need to cut. Just do your research on the proper way to do things and just send it! All you can do is your best, and learn along the way. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, just do the research to avoid as many as you can. Your experience will be filled with lessons that you can share with others someday. We both wish you the absolute best on your journey. We hope that you can find closure and start a new chapter on the road with your pups, alone. Or attract a new partner into your life that will make van life special and fun again!

We used the Work Tuff camp stove, but I would recommend checking out Pomoly. They are making some incredible outdoor gear, including a HUGE model list of wood stoves! Some even made of Titanium for backpacking and hunting! 🔥

As a minimum you should have some sort of spark eliminator on your chimney since you are setting 10ft from a dry brush pile larger than your trailer. You need some sort of skirt around the bottom of your trailer. There are many ways to do this. DON’T use straw or hay bales without double bagging them in construction grade trash bags. Raw bales will soak up water and freeze and freeze to the ground and the trailer will be immovable until every thing thaws in the spring. When you get your own stove, get one built for trailers that has an inlet for outside air to be piped in. You should slowly, slowly try to burn up the wood from that brush pile in your stove. Mix in a little at a time with the good wood. Take care and good luck.

The whole straw and hay bale insulation is interesting, so many ways to do it! Thank you for your support, we will definitely be implementing a lot of what you mentioned in the coming years!

"We" all learn together ///... strange sounding to me... I like to see other's learn and I may know something you might not. I am sure you know something I do not ... there are many individuals and I am glad we don't all have the same mind. ... Enjoying the fun and struggles... A great stove to consider when you have the funds (but it takes smaller wood sizes and made for indoor use) is Cubic Mini Stoves from Canada. You can burn coal in them too... but not wood pellets. Safety is really important. You need a good draft is super important. .Also, rockwool insulation is very good and won't burn up to 1000 degrees.

i dont have a camper. soon I'll get school bus n convert into a skoolie....in the meantime my only woodstove is in my livingroom n i've been using it since 2001. i have an identical stove in a storage unit ready to go into the bus.

Take the wheels and axles off and set the trailer flat on the ground also like someone commented build a windbreak around it and you'll be fine

I think removing the wheels would be great when building a more permanent site, but I think the appeal to trailer living is the fact that you can move your home around for different views. Also great in an emergency when you have to vacate the property. We get a lot of dry lightning storms up here in the summer and wildfires are always a concern of ours. It was so delicious. And actually felt really nice to not have the stress of making a big traditional meal. We just enjoyed each other’s company and beautiful food. Life is good 😊

You need to provide an outside air source to introduce replacement air into the trailer. You are creating a negative pressure with the stove operating and you have to replace that air through another opening. Otherwise the easiest way for the air to replace itself is down the flue.

True, however a camper that is not that airtight may be allowing enough fresh air in. In a nice quality camper a outside air duct would probably be necessary 👍

So we are located in the Northwest US, and the footage from our last video was filmed in November 2021. We are months behind on editing our footage. It created a lot of stress at first but now I really appreciate being able to polish our videos up instead of just pumping them out every week. Quality > Quantity.

We hear you Karl, and have been in that same position before! Best recommendation is to use Craigslist, and other online classified marketplaces, to find and post Ads looking for “Caretaker” positions. We have had great luck finding opportunities that way.

As much as we love that idea, our little property is in no condition to house a community. Due to us being on a ridge with slopes, we have a lot of developing to do before we can fully use our land. Being Caretakers on 3 different properties, was a great experience, and really helped us find our own land. Trust the process man!

smaller diameter stove pipe will keep a draft better

That’s true to an extent - it also depends on the height of your flue. Being a camp stove, this piping was already 3” and I don’t think a smaller pipe would have helped. Lessons learned from this particular setup: stoves need more fresh air intake, flue piping height, and thermal insulation increases your draft, and at the e d of the day; running your flue straight up will always be better than having elbows. Just some used Good Year ‘all terrains’ we found used for a great price, haha! No chains either

Why didn't you go through the roof? You would have more heat inside if you wanted it, or you could have used double wall stainless for better draw. And then a shorter piece on top, which could be removed if traveling.

We had no money at the time and drilling a huge hole in our fairly new airstream sounds terrifying. We currently have a new stove in a different window and it works so well! We did what we could at the time with a stove loaned to us.

I tried to get a camper to put on my land they my county and state won't let me so I checked into a trailer and they won't let me live in one of them eather.

Sounds like you need to move to a better county/state man. Also, just live your life how you want. Free men don’t ask for permission. 😉

So humidity is going to become an issue in the airstream. Other than that very jealous.

Oh it surely was Billy. Especially using propane heat before we installed the wood stove. Even with wood heat, the area under our bed struggled the most with moisture

Oh the dripping water on the windows lol. I am living with this at the moment, but am about to install my Tiny Wood Stove so I am hoping the moisture gets absorbed by this wood stove. Did you all experience less moisture post install?? I hope so! :)

Hahaha that dang condensation! Installing a stove is a must! It definitely helps dry everything out. Jason also installed a mini 12V fan under the bed this year. There are places in the trailer that the dry air can't reach, so it's important to keep air flow. Sealing any raw plywood in our trailer has also been a game changer for us. That's where things got funky before lol. We still have to wipe down our windows a little after we remove the insulation every morning 🙃

@@JayandDreOffGrid Oooo the fan in those tough to reach areas is a great idea! I will have to ponder where I should do that 🤔. I am happy to hear that the wood stove reduced the moisture issue. I can't believe how soggy we peoples are!!

Dry wood heat is a blessing, but living in smaller spaces still requires a little creativity, most of which comes from experience. We look forward to sharing all the tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years in future videos!

If you have one carbon monoxide alarm your short a couple... always have it covered a few times more because sadly you will not wake up if you have a faulty one and the rule of thumb is to change the batteries every spring/fall even if you have yours hardwired...can't stress this enough! Also make sure you have a ventilation system in place...

Solid advice Joe, Thank you! Our ventilation system was our RV ceiling fan, although we never needed to use it because we ALWAYS left at least two windows opens for ventilation. That was our rule of thumb - NEVER sleep with the windows closed while burning.

Why are you using an outdoor hot tent stove? Surely a little mini indoor stove would be preferable. There's cheap and theres cheap, then there's safety.

A free stove is better than no stove in my book! All of the videos you are seeing now were filmed last winter. It felt good to get through the winter, on a very tight budget, and learn so much along the way. We survived and thrived! Thank you for watching! 🔥

We decided against publicly disclosing where we live, for obvious reasons. Although, people can easily find that answer with a little research - we just didn't feel it was important. BUT I will tell you that we live in the Northwest. 🌲 Thank you for tuning in man!

I am looking for a new piece of land to put a tipi on. I had 13 acres in NM but sold it. Prior to that a Beautiful home on 35 acres with my horses. I thought I'd like to try the NW.

I’ve seen those stoves before Serge! Thanks for sharing! Only downside is the cost of propane fuel, especially when you live an hour from town, on a mountain. Since we have no shortage of seasoned firewood, going with the wood stove was the best choice. Especially since our friends let us borrow it for $Free.99 🙏🏼😉

Sorry for my english , since you have solar you should buy hoses and cop tubing to put under your water tank /45 gallons so they wont freez
