Our First Dim Sum with Friendly Chinese Girl 🇨🇳

Today we are having Yum Cha or Morning Tea with a local of Guangdong, China. Yum Cha which in english is often called Dim Sum is a beautiful concoction or platter of savoury and delicious snacks that are shared among locals in the morning. Such an amazing Cantonese tradition.

Dim Sum means touch of heart in translation. Basically it means you eat a variety of little or very small portion of delicious set of dishes instead of a course of meal as you would in normal restaurants. That's also what the emperor eats during Qing dynasty and you would find some of those history in Beijing. @15:40 She was wrong about such term being "popularized by Chinatowns in the West" (unless she considers Hong Kong as part of the West which it isn't/wasn't lol...) as it is just the way it was meant that got twisted/misunderstood overseas. So in Cantonese, they will say going to "Yum Cha" (which means to drink hot tea) instead of going to "Dim Sum." But those small dishes you order are all Dim Sum dishes that most people going to "Yum Cha" would do/eat/order. And the reason you "Yum Cha" is actually for health benefit that is to get rid of the oily elements from the Dim Sum dishes apart from the tea drinking cultural aspects. I hope that make sense to you guys.

Yes, there are several interpretations or understandings as to the origin of tea drinking,, snacks and foods. And the combination of these. However, I preferred to see that tea drinking is a thing in many parts of China. For travelers, road side tea stalks or tea house served many necessary functions, like resting, rehydrates, looking for directions, local informations and community interactions. Tea stalks, or tea house, would of course develop and expand their product line to foods. And depends on the location and the vision of the owner, determines what kind and how broad the food variety will be. From breads, noodles, snacks to eventually a full meal. Cantonese use dim sum as an umbrella name for foods served in a tea house. Make sense. So, basically, drinking tea and eating dim sum generally goes together and could be enjoyed around the clock, anytime you deem favourable. Sidenote drinking strong tea is deemed not favourable at certain times (not before going to bed) as well as some people (weak digestion or sick). One can always drink warm water, and referred to your Chinese family doctor or elders for directions.

So glad the two of you found a local guide to take you to try dim sum, which means 'touch the heart' in Chinese. These small portions of dishes allow you to try so many varities of delicately prepared "snack food". She took you to an old traditional "yum cha" (drink tea) restaurant that serves dim sum. Looks like you had ha gao (shrimp dumling), shumai (shrimp and ground pork dumpling), chicken feet, pork ribs, shrimp in rice noodle roll, and spongy cake. These are very basic varieties. There are so many more varieties of these small dishes to try. But it is great to see you enjoying your first yum cha dim sum experience!

For a Cantonese like me, Dim Sum or Yum Cha is our Cantonese version of brunch. On a typical weekend, the grandma of a family will go to a Yum Cha place and get a big table very early. Then all the aunties, uncles and youngsters of the family join and spend all morning & noon together drinking tea and eating all kinds of dim sum. It's really a cultural thing! On a weekday, it's usually the elderly who can have time for Yum Cha. My grandma used to go YumCha every morning and play MaJong game with her neighbour afterwards. It's not uncommon as well!

Dim Sum refers is a much older term for small snacks ord dish that accompany drinking tea back in the old tea house. It goes back centuries probably back to Tang or Song. As time goes buy especially in the Guangzhou region, the tea house evolve into "Cha Lau" which is more like a restaurants. I am pretty sure its origin is not from Chinatown since we use the term in Hong Kong.

Dim sum(Cantonese word in English)=foods ppl usually have during 饮茶Yamcha(Cantonese word, means drink tea) 点心(Dim sum in Cantonese)=点心(diǎn xīn in Mandarin)=small, bite-sized snacks or pastries. In Mandarin Chinese, "点心" (diǎn xīn) generally refers to various snacks or pastries, which can be either sweet or savory. These snacks are typically small in size and meant to be eaten between meals, similar to desserts or snacks in Western culture. Common "点心" include mooncakes, egg tarts, youtiao (fried dough sticks), and steamed buns. They can be enjoyed as breakfast, afternoon tea, or snacks. In summary, in Mandarin, "点心" (diǎn xīn) refers to a variety of convenient small foods without being limited to any specific culinary style or taste. On the other hand, in Cantonese, "点心(dim sum)" refers to a type of Chinese cuisine, consisting of various small, bite-sized dishes traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. The term "dim sum" in English translates to "touch the heart," indicating that these dishes are meant to be enjoyed leisurely, usually shared with family and friends. Dim sum is typically eaten during brunch hours and includes a range of savory and sweet items such as dumplings, buns, rolls, and pastries. The practice of eating dim sum is closely associated with the tradition of drinking tea, known as "yum cha." However, this specific distinction in meaning only exists in English and other Western languages. For Chinese people, the meaning of "点心" in both Cantonese and Mandarin is essentially the same, as the small dishes enjoyed during yum cha are also called "点心(dim sum)." As the lady guest mentioned, this is entirely part of the yum cha culture, where the original meaning has been projected onto a related term in English.

"Dim Sum" is like a category, just like how we categorize cakes, chocolates, ice cream etc. as desserts. "Yum Cha" is just a word for the activity of eating dim sum and drinking tea at a Cha Lau (the dim sum restaurant), "we'll go Yum Cha" is just like a phase for "let's have brunch".

I've been following you all and enjoy your truthful and unbiased views of China I'm a 3 rd generation Singaporean Chinese and is also Cantonese [ both my Mum & Dad are Cantonese. My dad is Taishanese ie like Cantonese Version 1.0 🤣 ] The lady your informal host speaks excellent Cantonese and English. I've visited China many times Some My favourite Dim Sum is prawn dumpling, carrot / radish cakes etc etc..... Guangzhou dim sum and food is always good [ Fresh , good value and economically priced ] ! Guangzhou food are one of the iconic foods of China which is also very suitable for foreigners as starters to try Chinese food as it would be less overpowering on the spice and chilli . Many Cantonese men and women are also good cooks as enjoying good food and cooking good food runs in the family Danke & Enjoy !

    粤菜讲究的是食材本来的味道,所以一般很少用酱料。这样才能保持食材的原汁原味。
