Our brakes failed in NORWAY

In our previous video we took a ferry into Lysefjord where we clambered up a steep wooden staircase. Right now, we have to put everything on hold and figure out a way to deal with our faulty brakes. Norway is the last place to not have good brakes!

Must have been a very frustrating time, but you really can't gamble when it comes to brakes.

Yes, having an incident happen (no matter what it is) can really affect the way you feel about a country. But do you think you'd ever try Norway again, now that you have a better idea of what to expect?

We can't really blame Norway for our brakes 😆😋 and we would LOVE to return. We'll just have to do it differently. The biggest problem is, the vast distances, narrow roads and loads of other travelers that time of the year. Oh and the weather 😋

no breaks, isn't it a diagonal security on the break pipes so that if one side leaks than there is front left and rear right breaks function

  • @WeWillNomad

There probably is a hydraulic split at the master cylinder for front and rear brakes yes. But still, if there is a pressure loss which depletes the reservoir both circuits might be affected

Hi My partner and I, at the age of 58, are planning to go on a trip like you two, probably in the summer - maybe we will go for a checkup in the summer of 23 and then on a long trip... Our question is, is a caravan (towed behind) better than a motorhome? Even economically, you can purchase a caravan from a more advanced year - it's cheaper! and adapt a strong and comfortable vehicle for towing. Thanks - Ron

Hi Ron! To be honest, both options offer advantages but the motorhome will be by far the most 'economical' choice as you will be able to take advantage of 'parking' for free in many countries and also use dedicated motorhome areas (either free or at low cost) which usually is restricted for caravans. It's also much easier to fit into tighter spots and overnighting is much easier in general than with the caravan. Navigating narrow roads and rural areas can also be tricky when towing and finding parking for something simple like buying groceries might be a challenge. That said, it depends on the season and the country visited and even how you will be travelling - for example in Portugal many caravan friendly campsites are super affordable and then you have a car to get around to explore with. Caravans are much more affordable and is tog already have a suitable towing vehicle or might be a good cjoice. It will just be a 'different' type of trip than by motorhome. . Personally we would always choose a motorhome as it suits the way we travel - but it's different for everyone. Good luck with the planning and see you on the road!

@@WeWillNomad Hi Thank you for the quick and honest response - we know that everyone has a way to travel that suits them, and every couple has the energy of their togetherness... I understand from your words that a motorhome is better (for you) because it is more accessible, not towed behind a private car (shorter in length), more comfortable and perhaps cheaper in shared expenses during the trip (parking, overnight parking, etc.) But the purchase of a caravan is very cheap compared to the purchase of a motorhome, sometimes a third or a quarter of the price! And so it is possible to purchase a more modern caravan and without the option of multiple problems, as you mentioned - leaks, ventilation, heating and insulation... or perhaps mechanical problems of the vehicle itself... It's true who is able to purchase one of them without money limit it will always be easier lol I would love to hear from you where would be the best place to buy a motorhome? In which country in Europe? What insurance do you need and where can you do it? And if you have an extra minute for another question... I would love to know how much money (at most) is needed for an annual average month for such a trip/journey/way of life? Again... thank you - Ron.

@@ronwainrich4874 Hi again Ron. Apologies for the late reply - the KZread comment tool filters out some stuff. back to your questions, to the best of my knowledge you have to be a resident of a country to be able to register the vehicle in your name. You can technically buy from anywhere bit you then will have a limited period where you have to 'import' the vehicle and do the registration. If you plan on travelling Europe extensively it's definitely preferential to get a left-hand drive vehicle. As to the country with the best choice.. Probably Germany with the Netherlands a close second. We've heard of dealers in the Netherlands that will assist 'foreign' buyers to do a local purchase (it takes the form of a long-term lease with guaranteed buyback). Can't recommend anyone specific though. As to the cost.. We published a video last year after travelling for 6 months and we're in the process of producing a new one goiing out in the next few weeks (after almost 2 years of travel by motorhome) Check out this playlist kzread.info/head/PLvli0i-u1tw1HfyzodzSMRM-SjunALN-y You will also find some blog posts on our website regarding costs for some of the destinations. www.wewillnomad.com/

Wondering why you think it is expensive to repair in Norway? If you think it is cheaper in Germany or another EU country in the West - then you are very wrong. I have tried it several times - with the opposite result.

  • @WeWillNomad

Perhaps there is a general perception of higher prices in Norway when compared to some EU countries? It's undeniable that Norway is more expensive on average for almost all consumables and a lot of it has to do with cost of transport and that many products are imported? It might also have to do with the cost of labor as there is high earning equality in Norway which effectively drives up the general cost of living. But we're not any making blanket claims - it's just our experience.

@@WeWillNomad I think you are right, The time I spent in Norway most things I brought were expensive, Its a standing joke in Norway that they go to Sweden for cheap goods and the swedes go to Denmark and the Danes go to Germany, then the Germans go to Luxembourg. Good luck with the van. We are off in October to the south of France and you have reminded me to check my brake pipes, You could have saved our day. Great stuff and enjoy. 🙂

@Bake been The Germans definitely go to Luxembourg for fuel! 😄 I would too. But for the rest Germany is a pretty good value country compared to most of western Europe. We'll be stocking up on whiskey when we pass through there. Don't tell anyone though. 😄
