You know....Rumple didn't tell her a single lie. And of course, we know he wanted her in that hat, but he also knew Emma can tell when someone is lying. Very shrewd.... I love Rumple, tho. He's my favorite .

I agree, I've always felt Gold has liked Emma. As previous comments have said, she truly loved his son, gave Neil a son of his own, and therefore producing Rumple a grandson. When I first watched this scene, I couldn't help but get the impression Gold was practically telling Emma not to go through the door. Saying things like "I wouldn't go in there for anything, I'm a man who makes wrong decisions, I always choose power", etc. Not to mention, he knew that if Emma didn't go through the door, he had a backup plan in the form of Hook's heart, a man he has and will always despise.

True. I mean this woman is the mother of his grandson, and possibly could've been his daughter-in-law. He and Emma are connected by Henry and also because he made it so she could break the Curse and find his son. So it's really thanks to Emma that he found Baelfire.

I thought he was just trying to avoid her lie detector. Idk if he likes her or not. I know he's said he wishes the best for Regina so he's probably capable. I didn't get the impression he didn't want her to go through the door though. He's a slimely character that let the truth lie for him.

You know, I do believe if he didn't have to, he wouldn't hurt Emma, as he told Hook. I think in a weird way, he likes Emma. She has power, she has spunk. She was the centre of his great curse, the mother of his grandson. But unfortunately, his lust for power always gets in the way D:

He told her season 1 he liked her because she wasn't afraid of him, season 2 when he found out henry is his grandson he looked genuinely shocked but happy like a "makes sense why I feel a familiar bond to those two", she was the one who unbroke the curse so he could look for baelfire and he instantly knew from one look at how the interacted with eachother that his son loved her and the feeling was shared, me personally I see him acting in a very father in law protective father way with her, I truly believe he would never purposefully hurt her unless he thought it was last resort and even then he leaves the decision making up to her

He's really good at suble manipulation. Just enough honesty to make the lies seem plausible. Just enough flattery without overdoing it enough to make it obvious or out of character. This seemed like such a genuine moment from him. Easy to see how he fooled her.

This scene was really well-written in that he doesn't exactly tell Emma the truth about his motives here, but he doesn't lie. It was very much in character for him, since that's the kind of thing he does. He always honors his agreements, but as he says: "Intent is meaningless." It's how you say it that counts. At the same time I find this very sad. It seems to me that Emma is at a point in her life in Storybrooke where she actually has some trust for this guy. Sure, she's desperate and clearly not all right in the head here, but still... she actually goes to Rumple for help, and in her own way praises him for the good that he's done. Yet, it's almost irredeemably sad that Rumple's even doing this. So desperate to be rid of the dagger that he screws her and everyone else over so royally that I find it difficult to see any of them forgiving him, even if he did try to change again. Back in season 2 and 3 I felt Rumple and Emma had a really interesting connection, but that all went out the window after this. Same with Regina. As far as I remember, they haven't really had any meaningful interaction since season 4 either (not counting the Evil Queen). Rumple and Charming even had kind of a weird bromance thing going on in season 2, lol. But in the end, it almost feels like none of it mattered. It's super painful that they built up all these interesting relationships with Rumple and these other characters, only to tear them down entirely within half a season.

Yeah, I agree. I don't hate the idea entirely, since Rumple was probably always going to be the show's final villain, but it was handled really poorly, to the point where I(and probably Robert Carlyle as well, judging from his acting) find the character boring and predictable.

  • @supremeoverlorde2109

    @supremeoverlorde2109

Yeah... Robert Carlyle is a phenomenal actor for sure... but you can definitely tell that the magic isn't there anymore. I'm not entirely sure, though, if it's a dislike and boredom with the character that has caused his change in acting him. I think he's doing it because Rumple's character is kind of in a place where he is depressed and has given up in a sense. The reason I say this is because Robert has portrayed him differently in every season depending on where the writing (and directing I'm sure) takes him. In season 1 he was mostly impish and sly as Mr. Gold because he had a plan and was confident that he was going to get what he wanted. Yes, he was constantly in pain and at war with himself over multiple things, but he had a sense of humor. Seasons 2 and 3 brought him full circle with his emotions which, in my opinion, made him even more awesome as they continued adding more and more layers. Eventually, though, after Bae's death they ran out of layers to add and he lost his motivation, not to mention a part of what made him the person he was. And that right there, is where I think they went wrong. Because, ever since, his motivations have lacked the substance that they once did. Now, instead of being the character we love to hate, more often than not he's really just easy to hate entirely. :( In any case, I agree. He is pretty boring and predictable now in comparison to what he used to be. But I do really think Robert Carlyle is doing the best he can with what he's getting. Whether or not you argue if it was a smart move to make for his character, I believe Rumple has totally given up on himself and therefore should be portrayed as such.

You think? I don't know, I mean, in general I feel he hasn't gotten a lot of screen time in flashbacks lately. But in the mid-season finale this past December I thought he did a pretty good job. Also consider that he is getting older and it may or may not be as easy for him to do certain movements or certain things with his voice like he used to.

Maybe I'm just imagining it, but it feels like he's phoning it in. Rumple in season 1 used to be really psychotic and devious, to the point where you were on edge watching him. Now he's just doing a silly voice and a few wild gestures(emphasis on few).

even though Gold is untrustworthy right now,but I still like the fact that he's not pretending to be the good guy in here and literally told Emma what his own view of everything and didn't lie and also didn't made Emma think that he's trustworthy, maybe hided the fact that Emma's gonna be imprisoned in that hat but that doesn't matter because Elsa was also able to change Emma's mind without knowing that little fact and Emma just decided to have her own powers by her own choice instead of just being afraid of what Rumple had planned for her!

I dont understand the hate against Gold. I mean the man always comes with warning when it comes about his deals. And for those who claim he could had done for nothing it is shown with Emma, that whatever magic is used by the DO has to be paid, like saving Robin would had cost a life. Which is proven when wrath came for Robin. It is not his choice at the end, In here you can clearly see he is warning Emma.If the man really wanted her in the hat, he could had easily decapitate her, but everyone forgets this even Emma herself. They better do justice for him this season.

Neal spent most of his life hating magic and avoiding it because it made his father turn into a crazy murderer. I think that he would've been more than okay with Emma keeping her powers because she had nothing but good intentions. He probably kept his promise and watched this from somewhere. Seeing Emma more than willing to give up her powers for the rest of her family probably made him love her more and seeing his father try and trap her as well as hearing him say what he said just probably made him really heart broken. I hate that Neal's death didn't make Rumple try harder to be good.

I kind of think that's suppose to be a part of why his evilness seemed to increase this season. Belle is a big part of his life and he loves her but there was really only one person that could make Rumple change and that was Neal. Since Neal died he no longer had that one thing there. Rumple doesn't live in the kind of mentality of 'honouring someone whose died by trying to be better for them'. In order to be better he needs that something (or in this case someone) right in front of him. So when Neal being a part of his life was no longer an option, well, he completely let go of 'trying'. I honestly wish that Belle had the power Neal did to change Rumple, but alas, he wouldn't really be portraying 'Rumplestiltskin' anymore if he changed and let go of the power.

2BAlive100 I get what you're saying about Neal's death making Rumple turn evil again. Villains don't get happy endings, but heroes don' t always get them either. Neal was hero and he still died with not that great of a life to look back on. But still, Rumple sat by his grave and promised his dead son that he'd be a better man and changed to quickly. I wish that I could've at least seen a small internal struggle come out of him like with Regina every time she thinks about turning back into the evil queen.

Julian Jane Personally I think he will change. In Episode 12 Rumple was forced by Belle to leave Storybrooke. And I think theres a good reason for that: To make him realize what he loses if he keeps up that desire for power. To show him that magic always comes with a prize, something he kinda forgot. And so she sent him away, the same thing he once did to her. Maybe they are going to understand each other better when they reunite...

I wonder why he says "we" don't have a choice. It's Emma who is choosing to lose her powers or not. Could he be trying to tell her something? Maybe it's true and he doesn't have complete control over what the darkness does. And I agree that he does like and respect Emma. She brought joy to Neal's life and gave him a son. But he isn't evil. He's dark. Regina is the evil one and he's cursed. He also doesn't make right choices, like he says. I think he never could due to his lack of self-worth. All his life he's been treated like garbage and bullied to the point where he doesn't believe in himself.

  • @SchultzDorinda

'We' can mean : " we don't have a choice but to accept that it has to be done" For Emma : having to sacrifice her magic. for Rumple : having to sacrifice Emma, in order to have enough magic in his hat to detach himself from the Dagger's influence (with how traumatic his imprisonment by Zelena was I understand his need to free himself for his greatest weakness), end at the same time being able to conserve his powers outside of Storybrooke. Plus having his powers outside will help to be able to walk without being bothered by his limp, and also I believe keep his curse growth on his heart at bay. I do believe that the Darkness grew so much on him by the time of Season 5 because Belle threw him out.
