Love it when Otis plays the wrong chord in the right hand at the very first bar and no one notices because it sounds so freakin' amazing anyway. One of my favourite solo pieces out there.

I am 38 & a pianist myself. I've been playing since I was 6 years old & I completed all my grades 1-8 in both practical & theory. I've also taught piano on & off in the last fifteen years, as a side job. With how busy life gets I don't play as much as I should, but when I do & I'm alone on my keys, the blues is my absolute favourite thing to play! It's my favourite genre of music to listen to & always has been. This particular piece is spine tingling, it gave me chills & made the tiny hairs on my arms stand up high! It sounds absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for uploading these insanely talented pianists. I very luckily came across your channel this afternoon by wonderful accident. I subbed, saved many videos to my playlists & I'll definitely be back soon! 🎹🎶🤸🏼‍♀️🎵💃🏼🎶🤸🏼‍♀️🎵💃🏼🎶

When Otis plays, it sounds like he is playing with four hands!! A unique fullness and depth is present the like of which I have not heard in any other classical blues pianist. He's the best in my opinion ☺

I purchased an L.P. of Muddy Waters in 1962 at the "Newport Jazz Festival" where Otis Spann was his pianist. What a truly Jazz/Blues expert on the "88". Michael Mctague

He is good but then again there are many others who are just as good and in some cases better. Amos Milburn and Little Johnny Jones to name a couple.

I recall reading somewhere, I think it may have been in the literature that came with the CD, that Otis played this solo alone in a completely dark room in the studio. It was in the middle or after of a recording session, and wasn't really part of the set. I may misremember some of the facts, but you get the idea. The man was a genius.

Otis doesn't waste his time with "nice" sounding chords. He goes in for the attack all the time - for the hardest hitting, fullest sounding chords and fills, adding grace notes (I believe they are called, as I've not been taught classically - I called them bent notes, a slur, or sliding up to a note !!!). He doesn't just add in a grace note (the semi-tone lower), he gives the grace note a grace note ! ie. if he is playing the G and Bb above middle C, he hits the F, then F# for a split second, before hitting the intended G and Bb together. This gives a fatter sound and harder feel.

++snakehips81 You can't literally bend or slide notes on the piano as they are fixed, so it's grace notes that are used. Still, it's only a name. That's interesting what you say about his technique of extra grace notes. There's probably a specific term for that as well, but I've no idea what it might be. It doesn't really matter although sometimes technical terms (if they're widely known) can save a hell of a lot of bother having to explain what you mean.
