Thank you very much. This new chemo(Ivosidinib) is easier on the body, in comparison to Temolozide(Temodar). It’s been a good fight for the past fourteen years. My type of brain tumor(oligodendroglioma) are slow growing and difficult to eradicate. 👍

I like the multiple loops on the back. Criss-cross some shock cord and you're good to go.

Hey Luke, I just wanted to point out that the attachment loops on the back of the pack are positioned such that you can expand the pack by attaching some of Osprey’s Daylite packs to the loops. It’s a bit cumbersome but does add some really nice ability to a very solid pack. Also, I have the previous version of this pack and got it about 3 years ago when you could routinely find it for around $130

Or you can get a cheaper tactical pouch and use that. What I did.

I picked this up a few weeks ago and used it on an overnight backpack. Heavier load than normal as the weather was cold. The pack handled the weight really well. Side mesh pockets were okay but the gap that allows a water bottle to be reached easily allowed stuff to fall out. Fortunately I found my toilet paper and repacked it so that it didn't leak stuff after that. I'm pleased so far.

I just bought this pack 3 days before this video dropped. Have not yet gone on a hike with it, but it is loaded and ready to go..

I have had this pack for over a year now.. it is an excellent pack.. I added bungi/elastic chord to the loops on the front and the lid.. I am from Scotland and the weather here is always damp with humidity that's off the charts.. this pack deals with any weather Scotland throws at it... I have loaded this sack until it's bulging at the seams , yet it was still comfortable and sturdy.. it is worth every penny.. I treat it ruff and it takes it...

I have the Decathlon 65l pack - I bought it on your recommendation - and I love it. Will be watching how the Osprey pack compares very closely.

I have a backpack from the early 80s and I still carry it and I love it when we go backpacking on carrion and Carry out only when I'm 62 in September

The Rook has gone up in price the past three years. It was $150 three years ago, but I think that was for the 50L maybe. Not a bad little pack for a quick weekend trip. I never use mine and finally sold it. Down to two packs now, summer and winter pack and that's it LOL. Good review of a solid little pack, or at least the one I had was. A few years ago, Osprey stated 35lb load out for the 65L. I would assume it's the same now. My 50L was Forrest Green

Dutchware sells a mesh pack back pocket you can attach to it.

Used it on a 250 mile multi day hike with 22kg in it. Worked well, since sold it for the Atmos 65 LT which I found to be better comfort wise and pockets.

I bought a used 65L Rook several years ago and have never regretted it. I have to say that I love the newer air speed back support. I might just have to upgrade. Thank you for the video.

Budget friendly to me is a blue plastic tarp wrapping my gear, tied to a lashed together homemade frame, using a diamond hitch. 😊. I love osprey.

Well we already know some of the ways they have cut. 1. Materials. They have not added the front mesh or extra pockets to the bag itself. This equals less materials used. (Also makes it lighter) 2. Materials again but this time it’s the type of materials they used are cheaper materials than of their higher dollar prices. This means the padding and the bag won’t be made from the same stuff and that might affect the lifespan or the comfort of the pack. 3. By using a generic rain cover…. 4. By limiting hardware to the bare minimum which means you don’t have a floating lid. 5. Probably by also using good systems from other packs so that they aren’t having to manufacture new stuff for this bag. All of those save money without cutting corners as such

I like it, I think the only thing I wish is that it had a zipper down the middle, I've always found having to reach deep into a bag annoying.

I got the decathlon trek 100/70lt (aussie version of what you reviewed) pack after your review of it and have never looked back. I squeeze 18kg into that but it gets lighter as I eat and drink. Brilliant pack.

They may not necessarily have cut corners as much as left out features. The Atmos is full of pockets and zippers and stuff. They save materials with this thing as well as the labor involved in building a more complex pack and also when there is less stuff on the pack, there is less likelihood that they have to warranty broken parts, also that is a different hip belt. The Atmos has suspended mesh that transitions into the hip belt. I’m sure this harness is cheaper to make and leaves some premium padding out.

With respect Luke I think you answered your own question in the way you framed the question about what Osprey have cut. It simply won’t be as comfortable for comparable weight carried over multiple days. Look forward to seeing you test it but I suspect the rook is designed to be an entry level osprey pack. Good enough but the temptation to upgrade to the AG system for example may be laid

Hi Luke. The specifications for the Osprey Rook 65 L are listed on the websites of a number of different hiking/camping stores (here in Australia) as having a load carrying capacity of 14-18 kg. BTW, love your channel, your reviews are very informative and honest. Hope this helps. Regards Greg.

I have the exos 58, I brought mainly for the back panel, because I'm in Australia hiking even in winter is hot and the ventilation is brilliant, I tried ultralight packs and they were the most miserable uncomfortable experiences. I know Osprey isn't in fashion, but who cares? It's how it performs in your environment that matters.

I had the older version in mallard green. It was a pretty good pack. Very simply design. My biggest gripe with it was the small frame would squeak in the shoulder area and it drove me nuts. I ended up selling it to a buddy for cheap and he doesn’t care about the squeak. I do love Osprey packs but there are better options.

Looks good, bit of a bushcraft look to it in that colour.

I bought my V1 Atmos AG 65 in 2017 for $260, and $35 for the rain cover. It is still in perfect condition, and I use it every year for most of my overnight hikes, it's the best pack I own, and I have been through some packs.

I've got the rook 50 in green so robust and spacious fits all my gear with ease and extra space too ❤

I have a 85 L one it’s been great , the pack has seen a lot of abuse and is still holding up. I carry around 60 pounds in mine on average. Semper fi

I have a smaller osprey pack and I take it everywhere, super high quality, I go between my osprey and my Gregory pack

I have the duacathlon on your review and it's amazing

i bought this backpack on sale for just over £100 and it's fantastic. The only reason to pick this one was the airspeed system, I sweat even in sub zero temps and it makes a world of difference. To find this sort of ventilation you are looking at 2 or 3 times the price minimum. The only downside for me is that the hip pockets are actually impossible to use for me the way they are placed too far back. I guess it's not a problem for skinny people

I have a 2020 Rook 65l and works great. I carry 30 lbs. with no problem at all. The complaints I have with it is that you have to use two hands to close the hip pockets. Also, it's a little difficult to replace water bottles in the side mesh pockets while wearing the pack.. I did add a mesh bag and bungee cord webbing to the back. The pack you are wearing is too big for you. They come, or use to, in medium and large torso size. I'm 6' and use the medium.

An Osprey pack that comes with a pack cover!? That's $30 of teletubby-green value! I'm liking the look of that pack, it has similar suspension as my Osprey Atmos AG 65L, and that pack carries weight like a warm hug. Hopefully with the plastic frame sheet, it won't have the same squeaking issue that plagues a few Atmos AGs and their aluminum frames.

I own the previous version and tested it on a two day hiking. It's ok for price. Unfortunately the hip belt buckle broke first day. Had silver tape and fixed it. Replaced it with Sea to Summit buckle later. Hip belt was a bit uncomfortable and stiff. I think weight limit is about 13 kg.

I've owned this pack for three years. I love it, gets uncomfortable above 40 pounds for me. Look forward to see your future review.

Looks like the Rook is daylite (the Osprey daypack) compatible. Not sure if you have one, but that'd be an interesting test to see as well.

my first good quality backpack, to be honest. nice quality-price comparsion and best option for people who want to start camping/hiking (IMHO).

A 65L pack should be able to hold 75lbs comfortably. Knowing that their super expensive AG pack had I think a 35-50lb weight limit I'm not holding my breathe for this one.

You ain't getting 75lbs into any 65l internal frame backpack comfortably. It ain't happening and the most heavy duty load haulers top out around 55lbs in that size. You want 75lbs in an internal frame you're looking at a 100l pack. Why in hell would you need to put anything even remotely close to 75lbs of gear in a 65l backpack these days anyway?

I own a Renn 2023 version which is the ladies equivalent. It’s the comfiest Osprey pack I’ve owned. I’ve owned an Aura AG, an Eja & a Talon. The shape of the straps which look more an s shape on my pack, hug my body shape better than all the others I’ve had. I can adjust the back to fit my daughter when she borrows it. I added shock cord to the front loops where the pocket is missing. I love the non- detachable brain as it’s not all floppy when it opens compared to the detachable type. And I store my TP bag & rain jacket underneath the brain so it’s quick access seen no stretchy front pocket. If jacket is wet it goes on the stretchy cord I added. I have comfortably carried 15kg in it. When my head is titled back it hits all of my packs except for my ULA Ohm. The fabric is robust compared to the Eja I owned. Definitely one of Osprey best cheaper packs.

I have the Atmos 65AG, as well as the Kestrel 58. Even though the Atmos is lighter and the suspension system is a bit better, for my money..., the Kestrel is the best all around Osprey pack in this load range. I haven't had any experience with the Kestrel 68 yet.

I would also recommend a Naturehike 70-liter backpack (Discovery as it's called in some shops). Good quality and functionality for an even more affordable price.

I'm still rocking that one you gushed all over...that thing is a champ. I thought is was called Forclaz though.

Cool looking pack and an even better price. I am a fan of Ospreys as they seem to fit me well, but the price tag has always been rough. I think I bought one from them years ago that was like 42 liters for overnighters and it cost me a pretty penny. I need one this size for multiday trips, so thanks for the heads up on this one Luke! Edit: I saw the thing about hitting the head on the pack, I don't think that will affect me as I am normally looking down at the trail but it was a good point out. Too many pygmy rattlers, cottonmouths and copperheads in my area to look up and enjoy the scenery personally.

I've had my Osprey Atmos 65 AG (Anti-Gravity) for 10 years. Over 3,000 miles on it...including the AT. My biggest gripes are the Hip Belt pockets. To me it looks like they saved money on the ROOK by eliminating the adjustable HIP BELT, the 2 Side Pockets, the Back MESH Pocket (where I store "wet" items such as my Rain Gear, Crocs when crossing water, etc) and the removable "Brain" (Top Pocket...which I removed as I don't need that extra space). In the colder months, I usually pack 30-32 pounds for my week-long hikes...in warmer weather I'm around 28lbs.

The Rook 65 has been my go-to since I started backpacking a few years ago. Incredibly comfortable at 30-35 pounds. I see they’ve made a few changes since they sold the company in 2021. Mostly the torso adjustment.

I bought a forclaz trek 70l. It was £80. It's brilliant

I think I have the older version. The back adjustment is different. Everything else seems to be the same. It’s still brand new.

That 65L pack looks enormous on you Luke! At 60 my days of carrying such a large pack are probably over. It does look like a good deal though.

Luke - Where do you get your music outros from? Many of them are epic.

In addition to being a backpacker I currently help manage backpacking equipment for a local outdoors club. It's gear that members can borrow while they're working within their budgets to acquire their own gear. We're always on the prowl for budget-friendly but high functioning gear. This could be a GREAT budget pack but the lack of a large front pocket on the back is a deal breaker for me. I don't want to mess with after-market attachments on a loaner pack and I'm certainly not going to foist such a shortcoming onto noobie hikers who could hypothetically borrow a pack such as this from our club. Man, talk about wasted potential.

My Osprey squeeks with every step.

Got the Levity 60, Exos 48 and Atmos AG LT 50. They all have one thing in common: they start making squeeking noises right behind my head. Once noticed, I can’t in-hear it. It freaks me out. I will not have another Osprey backpack. I’m done with this brand. Just got the Rab Muon 50, and it’s silent

Ot's not only Osprey issue. My Gregory Zulu 65 squeek as well. Sometimes it triggers me as well but comfort is beyond.

Hi Luke! I had the Rook 50 a few years ago and I think the backpack is very good for the price. But I sold mine because the frame creaked with every step. That gets annoying after a while. I found the backpack comfortable to carry up to 15kg. Greetings from Germany 🙂👋🏻

That is a nice pack but check out the osprey talon velocity 30 it just came out and I'm loving it

The compromise ( imo ) is less pockets, thinner fabric and a new production line that's cheaper, possibly a new location. The harness and cushioning is a standard material across all models.

I have one and it is amazing

I have used the Rook 50 for about 4 years now and probably 30 multi day backpacking trips. My loadout is 26-28 pounds and it has been perfect at that weight. I'm assuming the Rook 65 would be good up to about 36 pounds maybe 40 max.

Still good design and a lot of features for the money.

Just one a couple months ago, havnt gotten to use it yet. But got it on sale so I had to do it

Think I’ll get this for my Niagara Falls Trip pretty soon. This is a great price

Looks like it is Osprey's counter to the REI Flash 55 (which is rated for a 30lb load), so perhaps the Rook will be able to handle another 10+ lbs. * Colour looks like a goldenrod on my screen.... I really like the woman's Pediment Grey colour scheme, don't know why there isn't that colour option in men's. Have you tried Mystery Ranch products? I'm interested in the Bridger 65 for bulkier/heavier/winter loads. The M.R. packs are far more expensive; especially in Canada (where supply is limited)... are quite a bit heavier, but the load carrying ability to comfort makes up for the extra weight of the pack. I'm interested in the Mystery Ranch Bridger for a series because I really like the running-harness sternum system, and apparently it's top quality craftsmanship. Perhaps a bit of a luxury... but if one can only afford to invest in a couple packs... well you know ;)

This pack is more reasonably priced than most Osprey backpacks and I assume it has their lifetime warranty. Worth looking into.

It looks like they are trying to compete with the REI Flash 55 as a budget backpack too.

I absolutely love my decathlon backpacks i have many of them. Best backpacks i have ever found. But that just me personally

i love this pack i hate it when they overload with features this is just the right amount..keep it simple

Why do you call the bottom compartment?The sleeping bag compartment.That is where I put my tent.So it's easily accessible when I get to camp

It seems like just a toned down version of the atmos. It has at least 2 fewer pockets and the shoulder straps look maybe narrower and less thick. So I'm sure with those less materials and less Fabrication would bring the price down.

Check out the Decathlon Forclaz Mt500 Air 60+10 L backpack!

Problem with Decathlon is their customer service is so bad that even asking for something damaged or quality issues out it to shame. They try to brush off saying this or that is not covered. They should not advertise 10 years warranty

I paid £99 for my Rook 65L in October last year in a sale here in the UK. Circa $124 I think it equates to! Bargain

I think I paid about the same for my 65ltr Rook when Ultimate Outdoors closed their store in the Merry Hill, Dudley, UK shopping mall. A bargain and it's so comfortable.

Although having watched the rest of the video after commenting, I think I must have got the previous model as it has a different setup for adjusting the length of the torso system. I believe it is also possible to mount and detatch one of their smaller, possibly around 25L, day packs to the front of this pack to give you another 25L of capacity, but also something that if you’re multi day camping you could detatch and leave your larger pack at camp and go off for the day for a walk with the smaller pack

Some of us were crazy enough to purchase the Osprey Unltd Airscape 68... We all make mistakes.

It certainly isn't a Decathalon 70. Good but frame has corners cut in padding. That can be serious quickly. You will see for us. Good vid Get the scales.

Let me preface this by saying I can't imagine ever needing a 65l backpack. My thing w/Osprey has been that while their gear is typically durable, it is also nearly always quite heavy. Not a fan of the 'brain/lid design' either. I imagine you will get good results but it is well beyond my needs/wants. REI says capacity is 30-40 lbs.

I'm very interested in this pack for 1-3 night trips. Also as a 72+ hour bug out bag. The load capacity is pretty critical so indeed will watch for your assessment. Is there another Osprey pack with the SAME harness system?
