Unless there are severe weather alerts, I simply keep on hiking during the rain. All it takes is a rainproof cape/poncho, a waterproof hat cover and rubber boots. I really enjoy hiking in the rain.

I was solo camping in Rubicon Wilderness in 1988. It was late season, so I was pretty much the only one out there, because of drought and limited water availability. I was about 20 miles from my vehicle when I started to get sick (flu). Not wanting to get too sick to move, I started back out, cutting my 7 day trip short. I made it about 10 miles when I got really sick, so I pitched camp just off the trail behind some bushes. My equipment was mostly homemade, and pretty much stealthy, not for any particular reason, but just because I could. The next morning I rolled up, and was psyching myself up to get the rest of the way to the trailhead when a ranger passed me headed away from the trailhead. He didn’t stop, and I didn’t say anything. About 2 hours later, I was making some tea and bullion, (all I could keep down at that point). Lo and behold, here came the ranger. He stopped to talk. He told me he had passed my campsite that morning without even noticing me (which I took as a compliment). By the time he had got to Rubicon reservoir, he realized he had missed me and turned around. He told me that in heavily used wilderness areas like Rubicon/Desolation, you might not see them, but they will see you about every 24 hours. He also explained that it was only the heavy use areas, but if you were headed into the more remote high country, they knew pretty much when you jumped off, and when to expect you to come out. Not so for national forest, because there is just too much of it, and permits aren’t required, but that frequently they would be around without you knowing it.

Man-o-man…good tarp with long guide lines…EXCELLENT, quick, clean, easy in, easy out…PRO. Luke, something to consider…about drunks being inconsiderate out in the boonies…please be very careful. We have grown, over years, to be fond of you and your family. Boys out, looking for trouble, will usually need to prove how strong and courageous they are…to each other. Confronting them only puts dry wood on their fire. As long as you have a choice, don’t do that. Let ‘em blow off some steam and they’ll move on. Confronting them, when you’re alone, even if you’re carrying an equalizer…well, you don’t know what weapons they’re carrying. And there’s only you. If they bring trouble, let them chase you down. It’s not being coward; it’s being smart. All your stuff can be replaced. Please be careful…from East Tennessee

On wet days like this one i know you have sometimes read the small print on the back of food packaging but as a suggestion you could have a game in 2 parts where first we have to guess how many green items you have in yor backpack and secondly you could record the sound of the zippers opening and closing on various packaging, tent, sleeping bag etc and we have to guess the item from the sound ! That would be endlessly fascinating.

I was camping my entire youth as a boy... in canvas tents... on rubber-made inflatable mats, and some woolen blankets... no fancy stuff, no high tech equipment... no gaspowered cooking... just fires... getting wet every now and then... no big deal... - nowadays people tend to be overly concerned about the elements.. to a an extent which I cannot understand. The great Polar Explorers went with very basic equipment on their expeditions... no big deal... in most cases they made it... and it formed their character, boosted endurance and iron will to deal with it.... well, I highly encourage every outdoor entusiast to go back to more basic equipment, that does not screw up when facing real world conditions, such as canvas, simple cooking equipment and non-delicate gear... plus wool based sleeping systems... a knife, flintstone, compass... that's it

Luke have you considered doing an Outdoorsman 101 series where you would have episodes dedicating to learning more about the wild and camping? Something like an episode on the different animal sounds you hear in the forest, one on plants and trees you should avoid when out, maybe one on judging weather if you don't have cell service, etc.

Since having our two boys, I seldom find the chance to get into the wilderness anymore and when I do, they're quick car camping trips with a few buddies to let off steam. These adventures of yours really do well to allow me to "experience" the backcountry a little and quite enjoyable to watch from start to finish. I know I'll get back out there eventually (the boys are almost 2 and 4 years of age), but until I do, I appreciate your videos sir.

I checked out the channel you gave a shout out to and it was funny! Hearing the owls is pretty cool and made me think of a story I have about hearing owls. It might sound strange but it’s true. One night I could hear owls through my open second story window and I just stood there peacefully listening. I could tell the distant each one was at and decided to join in, since I could mimic their sound quite well. The owl would call and I would answer back, then the owl would go again and this continued for quite some time with multiple owls joining in. It’s very interesting how they take turns calling. You’d have to hear it to know what I mean. Eventually the sound faded into the distant. Try it sometime, it really does work.

My favorite is ramen (chicken or pork flav) mixed with a can of Country brand sausage and gravy. Really sticks to the ribs, well filling!

To maximize the tea experience, make sure the water is fully hot (barely off boiling), cover it and let it brew the recommended time. Most Japanese greens are about 1 minute, Chinese greens are 1-3 minutes, blacks/reds are about 3 minutes and oolongs (semi green/black) are about 4 minutes. Pu-erh (actual black) depends on your preparation style. Japanese greens usually run at lower temperatures depending on the type. Usually 175F or 185F. Chinese greens have a wide range, so you have to look it up. Chai is a mixture using Indian black/red, so it may be from the Assamica variant and wants a full boil and good 3 minute brew as a guess if there aren't instructions.

You are right about being an advocate for yourself. I had frozen shoulder and the first doctor I saw wanted to do surgery right away. The second doctor said to try therapy. The therapist said she could free my shoulder in 8 visits. It actually only took 5. Obviously better than surgery. That was about 3 years ago and the arm is good. to. go.

A while ago you found a long metal pipe near a campfire and you were curious about its purpose. It's a Hippy thing: when a fire needs tending the pipe allows you to blow oxygen precisely where it's needed. It works wonders.

Luke you SHOULD have ended this video with "beans and sausage"🤣 There's a few really decent content providers from across the pond, funny as heII...WildBeare is a must watch channel, she gets in the trenches with products and is a fun person. Kent Survival is another, great guy and content. Nice to see someone who can take a joke....that is getting SO rare these days.
