Back when I joined the REI Co-op, one of the reasons you were willing to pay a few dollars more for an item was the lifetime guarantee. You could return the item at any time for any reason. They’ve since changed that, it’s down to one year, but haven’t really dropped their prices to reflect the change in policy. The only things I buy at REI, now, are things that have a consistent price across multiple retailers because I still get reward dollars toward future purchases. If I’m going to be paying the same amount whether I buy it from REI or somewhere else, I might as well get a discount on future purchases.

Besides their anti-2a stance and politics, the Rental/Return Equipment Industry can provide some customer loyalty benefit but also be abused by others. The garage sales do provide some good values fortunately. I used to shop REI as my primary source, but once they turned against 2nd Amendment I try to shop elsewhere at all costs.

They lost me when they ended the ability to cash out your points. I've bought tons of camping gear from them and filled my gear closet. I didn't need more. The rei MasterCard points funded most of it. Being able to cash out those points was a definite plus. Soon I'll be switching to a cash back card that doesn't require me to spend it in their store.

REI sold their soul to the Devil when their lifetime guarantee became 365 days, and and all previous purchased equipment wasn’t grandfathered in. They also switched to vanity sizing around this time which was a major bust. I’ve been a coop member since 1987, but those decisions did them in for me.

I have been a REI member for 30 years now, and I can talk about the good and the bad. The good, lifetime membership for only 20 dollars that gives you back 10% at the end of the year towards buying more stuff. When I was still an avid cyclist, this savings in sports food was awesome. Their garage sale items is just flat out amazing. I have bought 2 Gregory backpacks this way and saved over a hundred dollars on each pack. For rock climbers, they are still kind of the only store around. The bad, they started posting signs about their politics in the store, which has driven some of my friends to other places. I can now find nearly everything I want from other places, so if it isn't on sale at a significant discount, I am getting it somewhere else.

I work at an REI warehouse and everything you said is true. A couple months ago we had lay offs. Some shifts being nearly cut in half. Morale is down bad. I've been there 5 years and morale is the worst it's ever been. The ones running the operation at my location keep us in the dark and beat around the bush and never give us a straight answer to anything. At our town halls when it's our turn to ask questions 9 out of 10 times their response is "we'll look into it" or "we're looking into that". Plus your typically corporate jargon. It's sad because 5 years ago when I started it was a fun place to work but It's just been slowly declining.

In my past, I didn’t go to REI, I thought that was a store for high priced upity gear for upity people. Now, I love it. The return policy helps me know that if I am buying a high priced item and try it and don’t love it, that I am not stuck with it. I’ve become an avid backpacker in the last ten years, I’m 60 now. I do shop cottage brands that I know are too small to allow for a store such as REI to carry with their small budget and the wholesale markup needed. That is not REI’s fault, nor the small manufacturer, just simple business. That said, it scares me to plop down several hundred dollars for gear that has 30 days or less return policy or worse, unused condition policy. It’s not often these days that people are loyal to brands or companies. They simply go to the internet and find the cheap knock off or whomever sells the same for less. It’s just the market we live in now. I’d rather have my quality item 5+ years from now than for one or two outings and if after one or two outings it failed, know I could return it.

There's an REI near me in Rhode Island. I go in there a few times a year to get stuff for backpacking trips. I enjoy going in there. The sheer amount of stuff they have for backpacking makes it fun to go in and browse. Also, their customer service is outstanding. A couple years ago I wanted a new pack. I went in to try on a Gregory, Osprey and REI pack. The guy helping me owned the Gregory and had taken it on a trip to Idaho and Montana and loved it. He measured my torso, fitted the bags to my body, and even put 20lbs of sandbags in the packs and had me walk around the store and up and down the stairs. Where else can most people go and actually try on a pack before buying it? The guy also helped another couple who were just starting out and was really patient with them. They also have a few sales a year that are really good.( Memorial Day sale currently in effect!)

Quality items cost money. REI is known not necessary for selling to the rich but selling the higher end equipment which will of course costs money. Having brick and mortar stores means rent and staff that online retailers don’t have to pay but it also means you can touch your products and see quality without having to wait days only to have to send items back to lesser stores and it also means you can get assistance. Being a long time backpacker REI has been a great resource for some of my gear and like most people I think I shop both through online and brick and mortar stores. Also, none of the clothes brands that they carry fit me correctly, and I can't find most of what I want anyway. No climbing gear, and very rarely do they have a single item for people doing actual multi-day backpacking trips, or mountaineering type people. REI has always had brands that work great for me. I can sometimes find it cheaper on Amazon, but once I take in the rebate I will get back(plus the amazing return policy) it usually makes better sense for me to purchase it at REI. I have been a REI member for over 20 years, and I do make a lot of my outdoor purchases there, for a couple of good reasons. One, they will allow you to return an item, whether a tent, backpack, or shoes, etc. for up to a year after purchase. For me, this convenience is well worth paying a little extra. No other store will allow you to actually use an item out in the field for an extended test and return it for a full refund if you aren't 100% happy with it. Two, their outlet store offers great bargains, and for even better deals, they have periodic garage sales which have super bargains. If you are careful and patient, there are often good sales (such as 20% off one item), that allow you to get a great deal on that larger purchase, and again, tremendous customer support.

Are YOU anti second amendment because you are so hardline about the free flow of military grade weaponry that you get irrationally angry at a company asking its partners to simply “talk” about possible improvements our country could make to gun regulations in the wake of a horrific mass shooting? Combine that with being able to buy direct from China and skip the absurd markups, and there just isn't much room for REI's expensive, heavy, mass market, China-made gear.

Yeah, this is what I mentioned in my post. I have 11 tents bought from Temu. I've used 6 of them. They're good enough. Not spectacular, not terrible, just good enough. I use the same methods for those that I do for my Coleman and Big Agnes tents: Tyvek ground sheet, lean-to tarp overhead to minimize rain hitting it. Those 11 tents (combined) cost me less than my Coleman instant cabin tent. I haven't yet come across a cottage company that any of my friends can recommend from firsthand experience but if I do, I'd be far more likely to go in that direction. I don't mind disposable gear if it's cheap enough. I just don't want to spend top dollar....for the same level of quality as a Chinese made product.

My wife and I recently visited a local REI store shopping for shorts for me. One thing that struck us was the lack of any signage that indicated whether we were in the mens, or womens, clothing area - I wondered around the clothing area looking for mens shorts and didn't know I was in the wrong area until I came across a bunch of sports bras... That issue aside, there was a distinct lack of inventory; I was specifically looking for Kuhl products, but only found one pair of shorts hanging on a clearance rack. Overall, a very disappointing experience. We have been reasonably loyal REI patrons, but this experience has totally soured our view of REI. As it was, we left REI and visited a nearby 5.11 store and found all the products I was looking for!

Another factor is REIs incredibly generous return policies. While the piece of mind may offset their prices somewhat. People clearly take advantage of them. The returns section is full of gear that’s been clearly used for an entire season and then returned. Abused, cut, intentionally damaged. I’ve been able to get some great deals with some ingenuity and repair skills but for the most part, REI has got to be loosing money in this department.

I do that with many stores to scout out items I'm interested in, not just outdoor gear. If the price difference is minimal (10% or less) I'll purchase the more costly item in order to keep the bricks & mortar store open and it's employees working. If the price difference is greater than 10% I ask the store if they can match the competitor's price. Most of the time they do. If they can't I move on with no hard feelings.

This video is just words to me. I have billing too and shipped at REI for over 20 years and have bought a large amount of great there over the years. I have had issues with vet very little of it. Also, it’s nice to know that they take anything back, no reason required for up to a year. I know, the lifetime return policy was better, but I’m sure they were a holes, taking extreme advantage of that by returning things at the end of their lifespan. There are a couple of reasons I love REI; the return policy is fantastic and I almost literally buy all y shoes from them for that reason. The gear is incredibly high-quality and will last longer than much of the garbage gear you were talking about. Also, they do discount items and have great sales throughout the year as well as the 20% off coupons. Additionally, they have the garage sale stuff which can be a really really good deal. All you have to do is know how to shop the store. I almost never pay full price. Also, they are in-house REI branded gear is actually really good stuff and well priced. I also really don’t care if a store that doesn’t sell guns, doesn’t support gun culture. That’s like being upset that your local gun store doesn’t seem to support the crafting culture. Bottom line, I hope REI can turn it around and while I don’t want them to turn their stock into the level of Cabela’s gear, they could probably over some more reasonably priced gear to cater to folks who can’t afford the good stuff, but of course t that’s what other stores are for.

I've found their prices unremarkable overall, and their REI Coop brand stuff has always been great for money especially with sales. I lean towards the survival and gun side of the outdoors so REI's granola-cruncher vibe was always a little annoying. I think a big part of their recent failure was investing big time on super woke advertising. I got promoted a lot of their ads for a while and it was all about getting more plus size, minority, and alphabet people into a "city-folk"-friendly, more curated outdoors. Skipping past any other debate about that, simple demographic analysis shows how little those communities get involved in the outdoors. Their anti gun and other politics have limited my use of them.

Became a hiker, climber, cyclist- They just built a new REI here in Prescott-some of the gear is waaaay too expensive- I think this guy in the video is right- Rei is marketing to the higher end clients- I don’t see too many 20 something’s shopping there. Sometimes it’s worth it to buy a super high end product- example, super durable travel pants. I wear them traveling, then turned them into pants for mountain hikes, then gardening, then working construction projects. They lasted 6 years so far and still very good. Packs- not so much- Rei pack for what I needed, 300-400 usd. Made in Vietnam ( where I was going) . Found a similar pack at sportsman warehouse, made in Vietnam retail 200 their price was 150, but luckily was on a blow out sale price of 70 bucks. It’s made 3 trips to Asia and still looks brand new. Savings of at least 200 USD.

I still have two fantastic down parkas and a vest my mother made from Frostline kits purchased from REI. Imagine that, building your own outdoor gear! I remember sourcing a lot of climbing gear through them as you didn't have many other choices back then. I pulled away hard back in the 90s because they started pushing political views and honestly didn't feel welcome as a blue-collar worker in their store. I enjoy a little venison here or there and enjoy a pheasant dinner when I can get it myself. I don't own a Beamer or Mercedes and would look kinda silly hopping out of one in my Carharts and steel toes. So I guess I'll go back when they start carrying hunting gear, have support your troops, and local police fodder posted about.... right, not bloody likely!

Prices seemed normal to me, only a few dollars more expensive than I could find online and the experience of having someone knowledgeable about them right there, talking to me about what my needs were, making good recommendations, and combing through the stock in the back of the store to find things was worth those few dollars to me. Every other shop I tried had associates that just ignored me -- and REI was my last chance to find what I needed. Glad I found them, and I'll visit again.

I don't think I was ever even out of signal on my phone. I also brought my normal shoes with me, just in case, though it certainly would have been a bad time if I had to resort to using them with how deep the snow got in some places. Outdoor gear was tossed in large cardboard boxes on pallets throughout the store. Absolutely incredible deals where you could purchase a North Face stretch fleece top for $15. Weekends were especially busy and many world class mountaineers would frequent the store. When they opened the second store in Bellevue WA in the early '80s, the facility had a new upscale appearance, but gone were the amazing bulk deals. Now I only shop the sales and close out items online. Let's hope mismanagement can be corrected. They still sell some great gear.

Used to have the coolest small, locally owned, outdoor outfitter here in town. The owner was an enthusiast who turned his passions into his business. Shopped there for years and always went out of my way to buy from him first whenever possible. But REI opened nearby and effectively put him out of business. He carried many of the same core products, backed them with infinitely more practical knowledge, and kept his pricing right around MSRP (e.g. he was not grossly over-priced compared to REI) but his foot traffic simply disappeared. Completely agree…the brand is suffering. They are catering to a market niche that does not produce profits. I joined REI in 1970 when I couldn’t find climbing gear and decent boots growing up in the Wasatch. I used to enjoy the original store in Seattle where returned gear was sold at bargain basement prices figuratively and literally. They have lost their way so I shifted to BackCountry, but the high end 1-2 times a year outdoors experience seeks to make large dollar sales rather than customers who are loyal. Sad state of affairs…

I agree completely. A few years ago, I wanted an easy set up dome tent to use to stake out my campsite when out driving around to explore hiking/fishing spots. I have a camper shell on my truck so I almost always sleep in that and don't even sleep in the tent most times. I had heard good things about their house brand dome tents so I went into the closest REI to check it out. I told the sales person what I was going to use it for and she was pretty knowledgeable. (I usually know more than they do but she was good enough) At one point, she said "So you go fishing. I guess that's OK but you're not a hunter too are you (while looking down her nose at me)?" I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I drove around the corner and went to a Sportsman's Warehouse (similar to Cabelas) to buy a tent for much less $$.

American outdoor companies have been selling low cost foreign items at 20 to 100X mark up for decades. $2 hats for $50. That sort of thing. The Chinese and others see this and are now offering these items direct, and that has pulled the curtain back on what has been going on. People have had it. I always felt that they were expensive, but it was worth it because if something didn't work out, you had the insurance policy of being able to return it, even after months. Something that serious cancels the need for strike 3. I haven't been back since I learned about it.

A member of REI since 1969. I just don't go camping as much. They used to be a reliable place to go get some outdoor gear. But I accumulated that years ago if I ever need a backpack, or whatever. But their ger buyers seem to have gone for the gold plated stuff, and not solid value. Their current pack selection is an example. A few years back I bought a super lightweight pack that was all the rave on Backpacker magazine, which I had happenbed to come across a copy of at the barber, and tried it out on an overnighter once. Never again, ever -- I gave it away. They used to vet gear serously, not read about it in magazines that loved it and the ad revenue it brought them. I have actually gone back to canvas packs for day or overnight, the extent of my outdoor activity today at 79. Those will last longer than I will -- I began camping on WWII surplus stuff back in the day. I do have a couple of larger Dana designs packs bought way back when for carrying heavy loads, but they are no longer carried anywhere I have been into -- "too heavy." never mind actually far more comfortable and more durable materials than anything in a current REI. REI seems to be run by lawyers and accountants these days, not outdoors people.

It saddens me! REI was my very favorite store because they were all about outdoors and backpacking first and foremost! When you walked in, it was like Christmas. They had something for every level of outdoor enthusiast. I equate it to Cabelas before they had brick and mortar stores. They had ‘The Catalog’, and every man I knew that hunted or fished coveted that catalog, same with REI when had a few stores. They had gear for every budget, and yes it was expensive, but they also had more reasonable gear, but not anymore. I am a purist when I am outdoors. I come there to be one with nature, I don’t want to string twinkle lights, or set up a basecamp for others to drop by and sit at the bar and have a cold brew and watch basketball playoffs together. I want the solitude, the quietness, the smells of nature instead of bubba’s kids riding by on their electric bikes. I like luxury like the next fellow, but it’s not what I need to be outside. I do hope they can turn around their business plan and get back to what they used to do best, but I don’t see it happening. Last purchase I made a few weeks ago, I heard a cashier tell someone in front of me, ‘We haven’t made any money in years, not since 2020 anyway’. Not sure I see much of a future for them. 🙁

I have had an REI membership since 1963. A great company then. I mail ordered some good equipment at very good prices. I really liked the people and the support. Over time there were more equal or better competitors. But the real problem is attitudes, prices, and some spectacular quality problems. I no longer was the coustomer they wanted and it became more and more obvious. If they have not looked arround and seen the problem already, I don't think they ever will.

I am a card carrying REI member. I agree that they are over priced on the exact same items that you can pick up elsewhere. IMHO what they do have going for them is the selection in store and on-line on food stuffs. They are a bit soft on "stoves" like solid fuel stoves. They have dropped items that I bought in the past and don't know why they couldn't keep them on line, I have a UCO candle lantern and bought from them in the past a stainless steel two piece downward facing reflector (I put the reflector on it and hang it in my tent and it lights up the floor real good you can read a book under it) but they don't carry it any more.

I’m a fan of REI. Their private label apparel is of good quality and price. They do carry some expensive brands, and I typically don’t end up buying those items. I do hit their sale rack and find some good deals. I’m a gun owner, but I’m not walking away from them for taking a position and following through with their actions. I’m in the minority there, and I’m sure they have missed sales due to their stance.

I think you are partly correct. There are those that can’t or won’t spend the money for the things in REI. The part you missed is that for those people that can afford to spend the money, or are willing to spend money for quality outdoor items, they sometimes look down on REI as a “big box store”. Many of the high end equipment like tents and backpacks aren’t even sold at REI. They are sold at smaller specialty stores that also offer tremendous service after the sale.
