What a terrible brother! Phil is a troll! Also, my mother says, "You should love your children equally!"

Michael made the best choice in his situation, he stated only facts about the crime and didn't allow past to sway it towards anything worse.

Didn't the parents commit a crime when they kicked him out? He was only 17 years old and had they done it even one year later it would have been legal. The statute of limitations might have expired but I wonder if child abandonment charges could have been pressed?

OP...This is ridiculous..the parents didn't even give him a chance. Time for you to leave. Turn your back on them like they turned their backs on you!! Never let them.back into your life..EVER! Sorry will not change what they did to you!

In some alternate universe scenario (and with over 8 billion people in the world its probably happened somewhere in some form) where things had really gone south for the main character. Maybe parents press criminal charges and he is falsely convicted or maybe he ends up homeless and his life takes a way worse turn, then I wonder how they would make that up to him? That would make for an interesting story too.

no chance in hell that he'd be allowed to be involved in a case of a family member, definitely fiction

You are right. That is so obvious, I'm surprised they did that.

It's very unusual for the police to allow a relative to investigate a relative. They will usually ask you to step aside.

I know right. Conflict of interest will never be brushed aside in this case.
