(Jan. 1, 2022) Top heavyweight Luis “King Kong” Ortiz scored a sixth-round TKO of former heavyweight champion Charles Martin in a dramatic IBF HeavyweightTitle Eliminator showdown that headlined a FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View Saturday night from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
In a back and forth battle that topped a five-fight all-heavyweight pay-per-view, Ortiz (33-2, 28 KOs) recovered from two knockdowns to earn the TKO over the former heavyweight titleholder Martin (28-3-1, 25 KOs). The fight got off to a hot start in round one, with Martin landing a bruising left hand to the side of Ortiz’s head that sent him down late in the frame.
While Ortiz was able to regain his composure and do effective body work and snap his jab, Martin struck once again at the end of round four, landing a hard jab with his right hand that put Ortiz down for the second time in the fight.
"I was very focused during this fight,” said Ortiz. “I was never worried. My trainer just told me to keep working the jab and that's what I was able to do.”
In a battle of gargantuan southpaws, Ortiz landed the left hand that ultimately decided the fight, connecting on a counter early in round six that immediately dazed Martin, who looked potentially out on his feet. Ortiz quickly followed up with a flurry and scored the knockdown, leaving Martin with his glove tied up in the ropes.
"It was very difficult going southpaw against southpaw,” said Ortiz. “At the end of the day, my intelligence won the fight.”
Martin was able to rise to his feet and looked to hold on with over two minutes left in the round, but Ortiz was relentless in his attack and eventually forced referee Frank Santore Jr. to wave off the bout 1:37 into round six. Despite trailing on all three scorecards coming into the final round, Ortiz landed an impressive 57 percent of his power punches in the fight, including 19 of 23 in round six, according to CompuBox.
"I maintained faith the entire time,” said Ortiz. “I knew I had my family and these fans behind me. I told everyone that this fight would be fireworks. He knocked me down, but then I finished him. I respect him a lot and now I’m coming after every heavyweight in line for the title.”

I know it was like 6 years ago and the opponent wasn't exactly a world beater, but his fight against Bryant Jennings was one of the most polished and technically tight performances I have ever seen from a heavyweight. He has real craft. Hes just old as dirt.

I’ve been waiting to see this, I hope Ortiz can make it competitive tonight, I didn’t like his legs but he’s still got hands and that was a good finish. I hope he can get a lead and make Ruiz work and then I guess we see how much he has in the tank.

Hopefully they got that fixed but if you go and watch the behind the camp stuff for Wilder 2 his recovery was targeted to his knees so I'm assuming it's been an issue for a while now and he can't get the proper help he needs because it could end his career
Before this when's the last time two southpaw heavyweights fought each other? I don't think I've ever seen it.

If Luis Ortiz has his legs under him more so than he did in this fight, combined with his experience and POWER, he could definitely beat Ruiz. I hope it's a great fight! Now that I look back at it, I think that first shot high on the side of the head (and ring rust) disrupted his equal Librium for a couple of rounds, but he eventually shook it off and came back.

Yeaahh, I got Ruiz in 6 or less. He's younger and way more active with the faster hands, plus he can counterpunch. But if Ortiz can make him hesitate it could get interesting. Glad to see Ortiz getting some good money before he's out of the sport though. The man waited long enough.

Martin's Continues Backpaddling is Annoying
Early stoppage, no question. Seen guys knocked flat on their face get up at nine and win the fight. This guy gets up at 2or3 from all fours, what's the big deal. Also this is the only round he took some punishment, not like it was round 10 and he was taking a beating every round. I say fix was in.
Legs go before skill and power is the last to go... we are watching that happen with Luis Ortiz... one more fight against Frank Sanchez in Miami next year October 10

But also after his fight with Wilder it seems like his punch resistance has gone down. That could be a positive for Ruiz. Luis gotta take his time, jab, jab and set up ko and don't waste too much energy.
