Orthodox Jew SHOCKS People With Flawless Chinese

Ойын-сауық

My Hasidic Orthodox Jewish friend speaks perfect Mandarin, and today we went to Flushing, New York City’s biggest Chinatown, to chat with Chinese locals in Mandarin! We bargained throughout the marketplaces and supermarket. Then we ran into a legit Buddhist priest and his friends who were all totally surprised that we spoke Mandarin and Fuzhounese. We bought plenty of fruit from vendors and groceries from the supermarket using our Chinese, and lots of amazing conversations were had. Really interesting social experiment that surprised us all!
Make sure you check out my friend Philip’s channel - he’s a Hasidic Jewish guy who speaks totally fluent Mandarin from a stint in China, and he's traveled all over the world as well! / chayal304

Personally, I work in a factory (Ontario, Canada) and 90% of my coworkers are Chinese. It really got me interested in learning the language, and I've been on Duo Lingo for about 2 months now. This last month past I haven't been giving that much effort, but finding this channel again and seeing the smiles it brings to passer-bye's when Xiaoma speaks to them is exactly how some of my own coworkers felt when I come in and try to speak to them. This content has inspired me to turn my outlook around and want to push further into learning their tongue, with enough practice I hope I could be at this level of speech!

Probably not much more there. He's someone who's dressed vaguely like a Taoist, wearing a mix of Korean and Chinese malas, plus a Buddha necklace (Buddhists don't wear those), isn't a monk, but got familiar with some rituals enough to amuse people. The other dudes there are mocking him. A lot of them are scammers, there's one named Mak Tin Si/Mak Jo Si/Jee Sifu who targets westerners.

In my opinion, having Philip as a companion on your excursion helps you. He is a little older and less timid (or perhaps less cautious). Philip will ask questions or interact in a way that makes the people reveal more about themselves. He places or puts himself in there, with the Chinese speaking people. Perhaps he is being consistent with his language learning tip. That is, he immerses himself in with the people that speak another language. He even gets physically closer to people, sort of gets into other people's space (physically & figuratively). Not at all, implying that your are invading people's space. Maybe he learned a different concept of "personal space" from his Hasidic community. Regardless, you both (Ari & Philip) fed off each other by giving each other more confidence and at the same time being respectful in this cross cultural excursion. This is one of your best videos. Would like to hear you comment about what you (Ari) learned from each excursion or video (for example, it was interesting to hear the claim, that Myanmar is a major exporter of jade).

this video idea is great. having a friend gives you chances to interact in ways besides tasting more food. definitely you should find more people to take trips with.

at 5:26 she says her daughter has too high requirements. i think that's more complaining about her rather than saying he's out of her league.

As a New Zealander, I have to say that the best jade comes from Aotearoa (New Zealand), The indigenous people call it pounamu. It is Nephrite jade and is considered a taonga (treasure) to Maori. Stay well and safe on your continued adventures.
