Yes, the oil will remain on the dead plant and can give you a rash for up to 5 years! Bagging it up and getting rid of it is the only safe way to truly eliminate it, or just stay away from the dead plants.

Yeah that's the best way to do it if you want to be sure it's gone for good. I've had to cut a few hearty vines growing up trees myself.

you might consider getting that industrial vinegar and spraying that down on it. ....... no nasty chems but it's strong enough to knock that shit down

  • @fixitFlip

Yeah I might try that in the future. I've just read that the vinegar only kills the leaves and that it comes back strong the next year. I'm definitely not a fan of the chemicals. But I really don't like poison ivy either.

@@fixitFlip I'm in year 2 of vinegar treatment. I don't think it comes back stronger but it might. I can't verify for sure one way or another because I've also physically removed quite a bit. I do feel it's lessened though. I think it should be pulled up anyhow because dead ivy still gives you the rash. But once the leaves are dead you can more easily find the ends and pull them up tracing the line back to it's source. If yours is anything like mine, it's hard to tell the beginning from the end. Its the most satisfying to physically have it removed in a peace of mind sense.

@@dizzolve Oh yeah that's for sure. Nothing works as full proof as just plain old yanking it out by hand. All just depends on how much time you have and how much you want to risk getting itchy. I've had to cut a bunch of the vines off trees, etc. Curious to hear how the vinegar treatment works over time.

Well pal, considering that I probably have about 100 times the amount of poison ivy you have, I don't think I'd have faith in that stuff. In past years I never had any luck with those types of products. They don't kill the root systems, it'll just grow back. So far, I've heard about one guy's claim that a mixture of white vinegar and a lot of dissolved salt kills it, roots'n'all . I haven't tried it yet.

  • @fixitFlip

I hear ya, chief. It says "kills the root" right on the front label, but that's why I'm running the test, so we will see. From what I have researched, the vinegar just kills the stems and leaves, and it just comes back. So I don't know. Just yanking it out may be the best option if you want to risk that.
