Original Heart guys play Baracuda 1st time in 30 years - Synergia NW

Ойын-сауық

Rehearsal for May 2010 Synergia Orchestra benefit concert in Tacoma WA, Howard Leese, Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Michael Derosier - the orginal four members who became Heart with asskicking young Somar Macek. I'm not really into reunions but this was fresh and exciting. Shot by Mark Nichols on a Canon 5d dslr.

The guys in Heart deserve more credit. I love the Wilson sisters, and there's no question that they were trailblazing women in rock. Ann is probably the all-time greatest female vocalist in rock, and Nancy was one of the few female guitarists in the '70s. But...these guys were great musicians who gave the band that muscular Zeppelin-esque sound. Subsequent line-ups haven't captured that sound. Even the '80s Heart sounded much better than the current line-up because Howard was still around.

Funny how Ann always talks about how hard it was being a woman. Then she spends 30 years not giving credit to the men. Just like men are accused of doing. She's a confused and bitter person.

@@Frip36 In their R&R HOF induction ceremony, Ann and Nancy both made long remarks/thanks, including the "how very hard it was for a woman to break into Rock n Roll" thing, while Roger and Howard made very brief thank-you's and Steve and Mike actually passed on the opportunity and didn't step up to the mike. That seemed to say something more than what was actually said (or not said, by the guys).

@@Frip36Just saw an interview where Ann was talking about writing barracuda. Yeah she wrote the words but Mike and Roger came up with the riff at a soundcheck and Roger expanded on it later. Ann conveniently left that part out. Without the music , Barracuda could have easily been a sappy ass song . The words aren't all that damn good. Derosier is the sxxt. . . Possibly most underrated drummer for that era. . . People think Barracuda is like a simple song to play but the drum track on this thing is awesome. . . You hear the versions Heart Does without him and it never sounds quite right. Like it is dragging all the time. In the original band Derosier is doing these off time/half time beats in the midst of the guitar riffs that absolutely make it, and then he is just so crisp and ahead on the upbeat accents . . .

I was always a Bonham guy growing up, but the lead singer I played with for years was from San Francisco and he and his older brother were major Heart fans, and they used to always tell me that I played like Michael DeRosier more than Bonham. Apparently, a lot of the drum fills/tom licks and the way I phrased things were more like DeRosier. At the time (mid 80's) I was just being introduced to his playing, but he was definitely one of those guys who became an influence on me, more than Bonham in some ways.

Ah, Achilles Last Stand gets a mention! Barracuda can trace some of it's DNA to that song. Barracuda's galloping main riff has always has a striking similarity to ALS. DeRosier rocks and has always had monster chops. He got too painted as a Bonham clone, which kept him from greater fame. For me, listening to Heart cover Zeppelin in the old days it worked for me because Fisher and the rhythm section GOT it and knew how to play it. Covering Zeppelin properly is rare too!

I think the current incarnation of Heart is fine (to me they are a heckuva lot better than the 80s incarnation), but it's always better with the originals I agree. Hell, the 80s incarnation didn't even attempt to play Magic Man in it's correct form, they just cut out all the guitar parts and skipped the bridge. At least the current version has the balls to play it correctly.

A special drum chamber was designed and used in this track so in addition to the excellent drumming, the sound captured was special.

This is bad ass! I wish I knew why these original guys ever left ann and nancy. Heart has never had that heavy sound since they left. I dont care how many hits they have had since. Michael Derosier was one of my early influences as a drummer. I saw him play some incredible riffs live when I was like 14 at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds on a nice 105 degree day in 1980

ron parker That is quite funny, considering how Ann Wilson once said in an interview that she can't understand why people think that Heart is 'her and Nancy, and the guys are just off in the background somewhere'. Meanwhile, almost every one of their studio albums has a picture of Ann and Nancy in the foreground, and the guys are off in the background somewhere. 'Little Queen' is a prime example.

+Scott Awes Agreed. There's no doubt that the Wilson sisters are talented and trailblazing women, and Ann is truly one of the greatest (if not the greatest) female rock vocalists of all time, but...these guys are the ones who gave Heart that hard-driving Zeppelin-esque sound in the '70s. Even in the '80s, after they had gone more pop, Heart still had a hard rock sound because at least Howard Leese was still in the band and was on lead guitar. Even "Black on Black," which is from the '90s, had that "Barracuda" sound because Howard played on it. I don't think the guys get enough credit for coming up with the basic sound of the band.

Watching this takes me back to when this album was originally released. I was stationed in Iceland. Every week on I believe it was Wed, I would take a taxi, the Icelanders drove Citroëns, the little diesel cars. Very nice inside. Having a muscle car before being assigned to a foreign country which favored the small, fuel savers. Anyway, I would get the Taxi and go to the NAVY EXCHANGE or N. E. X., known by ea letter, and not like it is today, mispoken like the word Next, but w/o the T. My goal was collecting albums from the dated selections they had, to the latest bands, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and the newest sensational rock band Heart! We heard some of the tracks from the overnight shows on military radio, AFRTS. Charlie Tuna, Casey Kasem, and his sign off..Keep Your Feet On the Ground And Keep Reaching For the Stars! Finally the Heart Album arrived. I was the first to get it. Another thing military personnel did was buy audio equip that made your ears bleed. So when I put the album on the turntable, and the decks started dropping concrete below on the 1st deck, my room became the center of attention. Everyone wanted to know who this kick-azz group was. This was Wed. By Knock Off, Fri pm, all 3 decks of my BEQ was jammin to heart. Ok...Time to shut this down. Thanks for giving a now, Ole Fart the opportunity to do some Reminiscing(Little River Band) of when I was young and a serious rock fan of serious rock bands like Heart, who had the world by the tail in the Greatest Navy in the World.

Yeah I binge watched the Heart By Heart vids last night, and all I could think about was... what about Roger? Then, this on my algorithm...LOL. Roger He is the example of owning your instrument. I heard him say in an interview that playing is a lot about what you do to get yourself to the point of playing. How you take care of yourself, keep yourself in shape..before you even pick up your guitar. Makes a lot of sense. You have to be a musician, to be a musician is what I got out of it. Anyway, I've been playing over 50 years, and could only dream of playing like these guys....

I was gonna say the same thing, I always loved the drums in Barracuda when they're played properly and hit hard. I really like his technique on the bass drum. I'm a guitar player and the guitarist made the song sound sweeter too. I could tell that it was the original guitarist. Why did these guys leave Heart?

Roger Fisher was bounced when, one night, high as a kite, he physically threatened Nancy onstage. Steve and Mike were let go after the LA sessions for PRIVATE AUDITION proved to be nothing short of a disaster, thanks to producer Jimmy Iovine, who felt the need to insult the sisters in order to get some kind of "performance" out of them. The sisters eventually moved the production back to Seattle, but the damage had already been done and Mike and Steve were let go.
