I've owned 10 Gretsch guitars in my lifetime; I currently still have two. My favorite was a '60 single cut Country Gentleman similar to the old one in this vid. I now have a '62 reissue similar to the new one in this vid but with the mutes. I agree with your points about the subtle sonic differences between the two; I had the same impression. As much as I love my '62 reissue, I would trade all of my guitars to get back the old 1960 Country Gentleman. Nicest guitar I've ever had.

Last week I got myself the 1999 6122s -1958 . I do love it.. i read that back in the day they used Alnico PUPs and in 1999 pre-fender they were using ceramic pups. A I think after 2003 (Fender) they went back to alnico pups.. Mine doesn't have the pad with access.

Much prefer the sounds of the 1999 one. More variety. The old one sounded cheap from japan or something. So later much better. Dont care for the muffled sounds there were actually distorting some..egh not good! Not too bad a guitar. I like sounds Geoge Harrison was able to get from Gretches he used. Espec song everybody's tryin to be my baby. Not sure what kind of guitar he used. But nice and bright.

George played a Gretsch Tennessean with Hi-Lo 'Tron pickups on that song. And yes, it sounds nice and bright. I've owned several old Gretsch guitars, and I like the old FilterTron pickups, but they can sometime sound dark and muddy. The trick is to adjust them properly, and they're fussy pickups to set up, but the sound is worth it. I suspect that the old one's pickups aren't optimally adjusted.
