Learn how to make an origami T-Rex (Tyrannosaurus Rex)
Designed by Jo Nakashima (04/07/2015)

In this tutorial you'll learn how to make an origami Tyrannosaurus Rex step by step. I've created this origami when I was actually designing my Velociraptor and ended up with wrong proportions. Both dinosaurs were made from the same base, just changing the proportion of the head and some details in the legs and tail.
If you like dinosaurs, check out my playlist and try also the Velociraptor and the Brachiosaurus: • Origami Dinosaurs Series

► DIFFICULTY LEVEL: low intermediate
► MY PAPER: 20cm x 20cm Green Tissue-foil (jonakashima.com.br/2015/07/15/...)
This paper has a beautiful texture and holds the creases very well. It's not a complex origami and you can use small sheets too.
Standard origami paper works, but it’s not the most recommended. If you use this kind of paper, check the tips below to keep the shape (specially the last one).
► TIPS TO KEEP A BETTER SHAPE
This origami doesn't have any locks to keep it closed and a common problem is that the body tends to spread open. So, here are some tips to keep a better shape on your T-Rex:
● Use a good paper that holds the creases very well.
● Curve the tail. This will help to prevent the body from opening.
● Don’t use a large sheet if the paper is too soft (legs wouldn’t hold well the weight).
● Wet-fold if you use heavy paper that allows this technique.
● Don’t shape the back and add a small paper clip holding the internal layers (and hidden by the external ones)

Yeah .... this is literally low intermediate
Took me about an hour, but I finally did it! It's not great, but it at least resembles your T Rex! I just started learning origami today (technically, it was 3am), so I struggled with a lot with some folds I've never seen, especially the swivel fold and the rabbit ear fold. Oh! and shaping was near impossible for me- I think it may be the stiffness of the paper and my inexperience, but I couldn't manage that part. Though, with study and practice, perhaps one day I'll be as good as you. At least, I hope so!

this is the first complex origami I've ever done. and i turned out pretty good!
I like your style. As someone who grew up making simple traditional origami, this is exactly what I was looking for. No scissors, no random extra pieces of paper; just a regular origami square with good results. Thank you!
Great afternoon project for me and my 4 year old son. Thank you Jo Nakashima !!!

To keep a good shape, make a curve in the tail! It helps preventing the model from opening (using a good paper that holds the creases or wet-folding it well helps too)

Thank you, this was really fun to do. It's so cute at the end. I did make one variation though and opened the head to make it have volume. You just have to push the fold that's inside the head up and it creates volume ;)

Good design Jo! Working with foil paper, as Jo is using here, will help the T-Rex retain its shape and modeling as well as allow the model to stand on its own. When folding a new origami, I usually fold a preliminary mock-up version on regular paper first so that I can learn the model and make and correct any mistakes that might happen. This experience makes for a perfectly folded finished model on better paper the second time around. My test model on regular kami would splay and not stand without a drop of glue.Yes, I'm well aware of the ethic. Also, the 3D head in Jo's supplementary video really adds to the look of T-Rex.
