Organizing Paper Ephemera/Fussy Cuts for Junk Journals

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I talk about how I am organizing and storing my paper ephemera for upcoming junk journal projects. I am reworking my "system" so I spend less time searching for various supplies and more time working on my journal page. I have to admit, love organizing and re-organizing so this is fun for me. A bit of a craft room tour in here as well :)
This is the link for the video from Kelly at Root Pursuit that inspired me to try this system of boxes with in boxes :) • Absolute BEST Way to o...

Hi Lisa! Loved the video. Sometimes I wonder if I like organizing my stuff more than creating, but it's really part of the process. And I think as we learn and grow and do different things, we have to reorganize so it fits with our current style. Hope that makes sense. And I'm the same way. Out of sight, out of mind. About a year ago I reorganized to a system very similar to what you're working towards right now, and it's been great! I keep everything I might want to use within reach and by season. That helped a lot. You may need to tweak a few things here and there until you find what works best, but I think you're going to love your new system! Happy journaling my friend!

I swear, if I can't see it, it's like I never purchased it LOL! Thank you for your kind words and support. It means a lot. Happy organizing! xo

It's exactly my thoughts. I've created my first "craft room", it's changing daily as my larger items arrive. Printer ~ how often/where to place it, need it in reach, no. So today is my printing section set up, my sewing machine needs to be handy (moves it yet again). It's been a joy, the creation of my stage as Junk journaling is my DOC ~ drug of choice! Love watching ALL YOU left brain beautiful humans. Thanks, hoping to share my vids soon!

Thank you so much for this. YES! That is exactly right! The mess is such an important part of the creative process. I know sometimes I feel like I am wasting time but it really is where the magic happens and we need to stop thinking about which time is more valuable and which is not. It is all important bc it is this "mess" where we lose ourselves in the process. Not to mention, it's fun LOL! My craft room has been many years in the making and it is indeed my happy place :) Happy crafting, Lisa xo

Oh my gosh your room! I had a longish narrowish room built in the back of our garage in our last home and your room reminds me of it so much! Behind me was all shelves up the entire wall, I had some fun salvaged furniture pieces and a huge table made of an unfinished door on top of 2 salvaged cabinet bases. I LOVED that room. Mine was for mosaics. I watched several of your videos yesterday and subscribed. I ordered your drawer unit on Amazon, shallow drawers are my favorite thing. I’m getting back into junk journaling and am looking forward to stocking it this week. When I saw yours I was like yes, yes, yes.

I think I enjoy organizing my supplies as much as I do crafting and making LOL! I hope your drawers came and they are working out for you in a way that is helpful and enjoyable. I love mine! I like organizational videos, especially for art spaces. I can tell you what's going on with your brain--you're VISUAL and you need to SEE it. "Out of sight, out of mind." The binder method is for a different organizational style, which logically makes sense and is easy--for that kind of brain. The goal is to go for functional: Work space, access to most used tools and materials, and storage. For journal making, Joie de Fi has a similar bin style of working, if you haven't seen her. For working with your brain and organizational style, you may appreciate Clutterbug (YT channel, website). I'm guessing you're a "Butterfly" out of the 4 different organizational styles; a macro-visual organizer. Your room is GORGEOUS! LOVE the Jane Austen vibe. Your "Before" is my "After" right now with my sewing room! Disaster. Ha!

I completely agree that binders, folders and drawers don't work for ephemera for me. Last year I switched to parts storage (ArtBin or hardware store) and they're working fabulously for me. I'm actually using items and they're super easy to find whatever I'm looking for. Each has see-thru 24 drawers and they stack so I have two sets which are anchored and take up very little surface space. I have sentiments and phrases separated by category and labeled as well as icons and ephemera and can take the drawer(s) out I want to use and then simply put them back.

Hahahahah!! Diary of a desperate woman in need of endless drawers of containers. I feel your struggle :) I say keep on trying different things and experimenting to find the thing that works. Those other storage containers will come in handy later. The other thing that I am noticing is that my storage needs change with the seasons...hear me out ;) I have more autumn, Halloween and winter supplies bc I really like to create journal pages with those themes, so I have more stuff to store and accommodate. In the spring and early summer, I find I have less clutter and need less space for stuff on my desk. Does that make sense?? I need to organize more stuff from June to March and therefore my requirements change so I need to be more flexible in my approach to what goes where. I have to learned that what goes where is a bit different seasonally and that I enjoy problem solving my storage issues seasonally ;) Happy organizing and thanks for watching, Lisa :)

Thanks so much for the video and organizing ideas. I feel like I spend all my creative time moving things, rearranging, etc. but, cue to mobility issues, I've had to give up the large area I had in the basement with all sorts of room for a big desk, large folding table, many sets of storage drawers, cabinets, etc. and bring only select items to set up in the corner of our small sunroom which also includes a file cabinet, a small bookcase, a cart with all my harp music in notebooks, and a sofa which my husband loves to use so it stays. Getting the new space functioning is an ongoing challenge and I'm always trying to figure out how to get more in without taking up floor space or blocking the lovely view from the windows. You have me thinking -- and that's always dangerous, LOL!

Hi, I laughed when you talked about how your/our brain (paper lovers and crafters) work. I was just having this discussion with my sister and daughter! I'm in process of moving things around to make them more in reach of my workstation and love your ideas. I've been going through things I forgot I had and am purging and re-arranging as I go. All my rubber stamps are in a stack of eight plastic drawers crammed in a barely accessible corner, so they never got used. I found two huge zipper binders with fold out plastic sleeves full of stickers. One general and one travel. I'm a long time scrapbooker and fairly new to junk journaling so trying to combine my work area to accommodate both. I also tend to work in themes, so right now I'm surrounded by Christmas stuff but a large Rubbermaid container I'm using as a side table holds all my Halloween paper and Paper Pads! I could go on forever, ad nauseam, but I'll stop and just say THANK YOU for the inspiration!

I can TOTALLY relate to everything you said....the struggle IS real! The organization is a real issue and even tho I love to organize and arrange things it can be frustrating. Just when you think something is going to work, it doesn't. That is crazy making. The rubber stamps are a big one for me too. I LOVE buying rubber stamps ( and may or may not have bought some this weekend that I don't need but couldn't live without) but they are a pain to organize. The set up I have works well but I can't get them all in one place, so like you, some get used and others are full of dust. I know that even if I had a bigger room I still couldn't get things in the order I wanted LOL! Although, it would be fun to try ;) I try and stay fluid with my organization. I keep trying new things and moving stuff around bc I know that at some point, I ll find something "better" that really does work. Don't give up hope! Thank you for watching and your very kind support! Hugs and happy crafting xo

Hi Lisa... I totally get where you're at... and where you want to go. How we do things is constantly evolving. I've found binders don't work for me because I have small hands and arthritis sometimes makes handling them difficult. I've also found drawers don't work for me because I invariably will put something in front of them that I have to move to access the drawer contents. I've discovered I'm a 'flipper'. I like to flip through things to find what I want. I use photo boxes. I've been working on my studio and will eventually get back to the organization videos on my channel. I just found your channel!! Love the room, it speaks volumes to me on the decorating part. I love old boxes of any kind. I was curious as to what you kept in them. I have a small room and unfortunately I have to be somewhat organized. I can't have little boxes of things all over. They have to be in drawers or shelves or the closet or something. Unfortunately like you said out of sight out of mind. I think for me I have too much stuff. The more stuff the more need for organizing it. It's a vicious circle. So for 2024 nothing more comes into my room. I have enough!! Again I love your room hope you made what works for you!! TFS Hugs from California * L

I think I like organizing my stuff as much as I like crafting w my stuff ;) I am making a point this year of actively looking at and using what is tucked away. In fact, it will be the inspiration for a few videos in the coming months. You are a brave soul to make such declarations!!! Please keep me posted on how things are going with your 2024 resolution. I just ordered a Halloween rubber stamp set that I don't need LOL! Perhaps I will live vicariously thru you. Thanks for watching xo

So much of what is in here came from treasure hunting at the GoodWill. It is a collection that took me years to put together. each piece is a moment in time and there are so many great memories. Do the same with your space and soon it will feel like a part of you and an expression of you rather than a dungeon ;) Get yourself some good lights and yes, use a ton of colour to keep your spirits up and most importantly have fun abd enjoy the whole process. This should become your happy place xo

I had to face the truth that I had more-than I could use in multiple lifetimes….I forgot about my ‘stuff’ too……I loved it all but the sheer volume was blocking my creativity…..trying to manage it was becoming the priority…..my only recourse was to purge…..I ended up reducing the variety of crafts, which greatly reduced the mountain of stuff…..I’m down to quilting….wool work….altered books and a bit of needlepoint and punchneedle…..it’s still too much but at least it’s manageable now…..I have to do mini purges now and then…my nature to gather is still alive and well…..but so far I’m in control of my stuff instead of it being in control of me….good luck…!!

I think we all do Marcy. It's a toughie when you are creative bc there are some many wonderful projects out there and the temptation is to try them all. So many fun tools and supplies. AND! they just keep coming out with more. I often think about my Granny, if she were still alive she would be amazed at just how much is out there and the sheer volume of selection for any craft is astonishing. I am happy that you found a manageable list of crafts to enjoy :) The nice thing with your crafts you can cross over a bit and use things here and there in each project. We all love to gather LOL! I purge too and then think..."there I've made room for something different" and off to the GoodWill I go LOL! Thanks a bunch for watching and happy crafting :)

This video came up in my feed, so this is the first I've seen your channel. New subscriber. You should make a playlist of your organization videos! As I see it, those other things in binders are too far away from your craft desk. You may need to set up your area differently. Can you move the binders so they're above your desk or move the desk in front of the shelving units? Are you utilizing space below your work area? You appear to have a great amount of room. Did you ever watch Gayle Agostinelli's craft room tours? You might get some ideas from her videos. Otherwise, you need an inventory system of some kind that you can consult and immediately go to what supplies you want. It's a pain to put that all together, but worthwhile in time savings. Good luck transferring and merging your old/new supplies!

Hi Lisa. I really enjoyed this video and have now subscribed to your channel! I have exactly the same problem as you describe, and am in the process of analyzing what I have and figuring out how to organize it in a way that makes it all readily available and useful to me without having to hunt around for things. Like you, I have tried the binder approach and had exactly the same problem. I much prefer having ephemera readily available and being able to flip through it all to find the perfect addition to my journals and albums. I love the idea of the big box, subdivided into useful sections by type and size and think I'll go with that approach too. Best of luck with your KZread channel! -Trudy

I did resist it bc I was afraid I had "wasted my time" putting it together that way and felt a bit foolish for thinking I had it all figured out. I need to remind myself more that making mistakes is important, it's how we learn and to just keep trying. So, in the interest in not getting stuck n my own head, I looked for a new way and was thrilled to find Kelly's video. I really like having it on had and it doesn't take up as much space as I thought it might. Enjoy your re-organization and please let me know what you decide on and how it is working for you. Beautiful craft room , yes I spend more time organizing than making journals. I have 12x12 bags. I had made about 30 different journal covers. So I ended up putting them in a bag. Then I started adding what I wanted to use in that journal in the bag with it. Basically making a kit to work from once I get enough of pages and ephemera. And I also add any tags. Material etc. then I have a starting point. And you can add whatever you want to each bag. If that helps. 😊

And I could watch other people organize their stuff all day long 👍😊 A question - are those jewelry boxes on your craft table? I love them!! What a great idea (whatever they are) - they are perfect because of the narrow drawers. And I think those little baskets and bins to flip through are going to work so much better for you than the binders…which may be more organized but far more laborious to find things. The video was a lot of fun to make and I know they are fun to watch too. Yes, the white drawers are jewellery boxes I bought on Amazon about three years ago. The work very well. I might do a video about those too one day. They are great for storing little things. The best part is that the top drawers are shallow, good for stickers etc. The bottom ones are a bit deeper so they are great for washi tape, hardware and sticky note pads. LUV them. Totally worth the money. Agreed! Things are already in a better groove. The December daily stash was a challenge I have to say but it worked out great, thank you! I am thrilled you enjoyed it. And, if think it's just you...chances are good I do it too LOL! Clear boxes are key, I totally agree. That is a huge help! Especially for smaller things, yarns and string etc. I went thru a stage where I put all my "small" stuff in clear jars that I found at the GoodWill. It was fun! I picked up interesting shapes and sizes and put together a really fun collection. I used old salt and pepper jars and even a few bigger Parmesan cheese jars with the holes in the lid. It was a great way to display buttons, notions, chalk, beads etc. and it looked really pretty on the shelf. happy crafting and thank YOU for saying hello :)

Organizing (and then re-organizing) helps me to rediscover things. *Out of sight, out of mind, is my biggest issue.* But I have to have a cleared space before the creativity can flow again. If I feel cluttered, or have to spend 4 hours looking for something I KNOW can only be in this tiny room I've got...have to go and take a nap...lol. Your craft room is really nice! Sometimes I think as journalers we just have too much stuff. I am constantly rearranging my things but it's because I keep saving things for journaling. Scraps, ephemera, words, die cuts--you know, all of that fun stuff. But I could never use up everything I have in my lifetime! Meanwhile it all has to have a home. Now I'm contemplating moving some things down to my basement for storage. I mean, what? I'm out of control, lol. Also, do you find yourself saving boxes? Like good sturdy ones that you just know would make a good journal cover? It's a sickness for sure. I have to have everything out in front of me so the binder thing would never work for me. Trust me, I tried it. Some things I like to put away but most of mine is on my desk or on my cart. I try to think about organizing my things as I am using them & then storing them based on that (if that makes sense?) Good luck on your journey!✌

Thank you Melanie! OMG! YES! I save boxes LOL ;) Lots and lots of boxes. Since then I decided that I cannot save all my junk and all the gorgeous supplies that I purchase. Something had to go so I recycled all the junk. It was out of control. Im looking at these bins thinking this was from less then a year. What happens if I live to be 90?? Hahahahah!! So I purged and it did feel good. Yes I was thinking the same. It helps to try to have fewer things and work with/use up what you’ve already got before acquiring more. I think we have to look at it like we would with any other kind of hoarding, that realistically sometimes we have more stuff than we could ever use in a lifetime. I have also found that an overwhelming access to or visual of supplies makes me not even want to craft, too much to choose from. I personally craft in my bed lol and I try to just pull out a handful of different media at a time. Still working on organizing my paper, stickers, saved junk, magazine pages, fussy cuts, fabric, ribbon, etc. and I’ve noticed it can very easily get out of hand. Fortunately I’ve recently started to get my supplies down to a box, a short set of plastic drawers, an accordion file folder, some plastic shoeboxes, and more binders. I’m really wanting to focus on using my stuff up and condensing my supplies this upcoming year. I’m also having to deal with upkeeping, organizing, and preserving all of my old artwork including canvases and it is so much to manage!!! Lol

The Konmari method says to store things vertically when possible. Much better than things buried in piles. I am the same as you. Out of sight, out of mind!

Ooooooh that is interesting! I will look into that bc now I am curious. I have read some of her stuff but didn't know about the vertical concept. Thank you! :)

I find myself organizing AGAIN. BUT this time l am trying, I said trying, to let myself take breaks during the organizing, I am calling them my time to create break, and keeping all my needed materials together on a tray to pull out so l can actually do some journaling! I feel good about getting something creative done, that won't need to be done over again! Does that make sense? Lol

That makes total sense, yes! Organizing, while fun, can be very overwhelming. I agree you need to create while organizing and being in the right frame of mind is key too. if you try and organize when you aren't in the right head space while take all the joy out of it and it will feel like a chore. Thanks for watching! :)

OMG I'm the same way. I have a beauty room and craft room too in the basement where I live with my parents. I had to move back in with my parents 3 years ago (after 20 years with the abusive cheating lying father of my children...I caught him forgave him caught him again and that was what it took to finally be done. The house we lived in was my father's n he paid the mortgage on 17 yrs while my freeloading ex never paid a dime of rent maybe more than 10 times? And only$300 at that and it was much much more than that. Anyways so yeah bc of my health issues I can't work full time normal jobs n pay the utilities and take care of both my kids and my self. I have numerous health issues so my dream n my plan was to start my own business selling things I created during hours I wasn't in pain and could work bc I don't want to be here forever. It's been as bad here as with my ex since my dad had to be put on disability. Then my mom died and yeah it's been a mess and they don't see their dad and he doesn't pay child support so I get no help. Fun times SMH) so I had to make a whole house fit it just a basement. I have the entire basement of course so my living room and bedroom are just one big room and then my beauty room is in a little back room with no doors to the right of my " bedroom"but my craft room does have a door and I'm telling you. Most of my stuff is in the living room now too lol. Bc after I moved in here I started getting into making farmhouse decor and finally got my much wanted Cricut after 20 years of wanting one almost lol. But I barely get to use it bc I spend more time trying to organize my house stuff and bedroom stuff and seasonal decor and them all my planner and journaling and painting stuff now added to all that with bins n totes n shelves full of dollar tree supplies n a actual wood pile (it warps if I leave it in the garage bc of the contrasting severe temps of the Midwest. I've lost allot of wood in there bc of it so now it's in as tote, a tall laundry hamper and a drawer under my basement stairs lol. But yeah ever season I have to reorganize so I end up never getting anything made bc of that and then being in pain or my flareups, or some kind of chaos and stress bc of my dad and my teenage son and my college aged daughter who doesn't sleep or go to her own room she stays down here and if she'd asleep I can't make anything bc it bother me and it changescmy mojo. She'd my best friend in the entire world and the sweetest most innocent n kind n smart girl you'd ever meet (that's why it's horrible what their father did and is still putting them through. Drugs and a girl 12 yrs younger were more important than us!) But she's not into crafty stuff or journaling or home decor lol. She's too swamped with trying to get her sonographer schooling n clinicals done a anyways. She's not a high energy girl and she's kind of Lazy. That the only thing about her tho that you'd even call a negative tho. She tells me I have enough creativity and personality for the two of us! 😂😂 So true kiddo! Anyways yes if I can't see my stuff I forget about it. And I'm a list maker and pile stacker. Lol I make so many creative to do lists of things I wanna make(oh and it being winter is not easy to spray paint things or use my electric power tools and my dad is anal about even moving his truck out of the garage so I even can. He begged for us to come here for 19 years n leave my ex and I did and he completely flipped personality. He's always been controlling and had a temper but getting old and weak n his diabetes causing him to lost one foot has made him bitter and cruel and he takes it out on my son and I. Most me bc I protect my kids though he never speaks threat way to my daughter. She's too kind and does what he says no matter how much she doesn't want to. She isn't confrontational but she's said she'd starting to hate him over all he's put us through when he's the one that begged us to come here to begin with. Nobody wants to be around him bc all he does is complain n put them down and he says such out of this world delusional things. Last week he told me my car has a computer that knows what foot in using to drive and if I hover one foot over the break. My daughter wouldn't have said anything but I'm but that way so I did and it ended with him threatening me and calling my mother a worn out old whore and my mom died last year of cancer in 11 days off knowing and I'm tht one that took care of her her final 3-4 days. It was horrible. So that was the last straw for me. I don't care if he might be getting early onset Alzheimer's or demential.... He's always been verbally and physically abusive and cruel n controlling like that and he's worse now that nobody is scared of him bc he's not big anymore or tough looking SMH so as you can prob see...I don't have allot of desire to create when I'm living through this ridiculously toxic hell here too.

hello Elizabeth! Organizing and re-doing is a game that requires a lot of time. There just isn't any way around it and when it comes to fussy cuts and all the little bits we love to keep, we have to roll up our sleeves and dig in. My biggest suggestion is to look at it as a way to have fun, de-stress and kinda zone out for a bit. Wait until you are in the mood to tackle this project, put on a show, music or podcast that you really enjoy and just go for it. I would collect a bunch of small boxes and then organize your fussy cuts into categories and then place those smaller boxes in your shoe box. This way you have a system in place and then you can add to it as you go along. There isn't a right way to organize your ephemera, just do it in a way that makes you happy. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right. But most importantly, enjoy the time you spend going thru you stash :)

Hi Lisa do you file it by colour or theme, I tried binders , but I forget what I have😢

Hiya Ana! I find by theme works best for me. Yes, that is part of the struggle...forgetting what is in them. I find if I include things that I use on a regular basis, I have to open them regularly and that helps to remind me what is in them. Also, I sometimes put the things I use the most in the back and that reminds me more often of what I have in there bc I have to flip thru the pages to get to the needed items in the back. This can help! Thank you for watching! :)

How many journals do you make and sell? It looks to me that you have way too much stuff and need to use up at least half of it before acquiring/making more. Sometimes we get carried away with stashing, which is just our crafters word for hoarding. We are all so guilty. 😉

your craft room is nice, but you over louded by 'staff' so why you forget... you will be organize endless, because you fascinate by what you have... to much 'staff' stop creativity, you always will be through by pieces... we buy, because we think 'we need ' what other have...but true is better have less...hugs, Ursa
