Our streak of incredible luck continued as we found the pack along the captivating banks of the Sand River, just a day after the awe-inspiring airstrip encounter. Cameras at the ready, we eagerly positioned ourselves, hoping to capture the enchanting spectacle of all five adults and thirteen playful pups embarking on a river crossing.
Under the high sun and rising temperatures, the wild dogs teased us with the prospect of a crossing, engaging in a delightful display of camaraderie along the water's edge. But luck wasn't quite on our side this time, as they opted for some shallows revelry before settling in the cool shade nearby.
The afternoon unfolded with anticipation as we patiently awaited the moment these magnificent creatures would decide to take the plunge. Our reward? A delightful session of birding against the serene backdrop of the Sand River.
As the setting sun painted the sky with golden hues, the wild dogs, with a hint of reluctance, danced along the riverbank, building the suspense. And then, the magic happened - a leap into what can only be described as organized chaos. Pups sticking close to a couple of adults, the rest keeping vigilant watch for potential dangers. In the blink of an eye, they bound through the water, onto the northern bank, and vanish into the wild.

That's a very important thing they stick together no matter what happens
The wild dogs was amazing!! They are all staying and sticking close with the adult. When she stopped they all would corral around her. They was definitely weary of the water with good reason. Thank you for shari g this lovely video with us.

An amazing video. Nature is so glorious and implores an immediate sense of tranquility. As an ex-Rhodedian where going to the bush for picnics was the norm this video mad me home sick. The birds warbling in the background added made it even more intriguing. Miss the bush etc. Brilliant coverage. God.bless

Yes, once you ate brought up bushwise that longing never goes away. I am moving into a remote part of the Karoo, it's not the same as Rhodesia, but the vast horizons and birds of prey etc are a relief after the city, I enjoyed your message , thanks..from Tracy.

They were either 17 or 19 as a total, seems they lost few pups, very normal.

Hi Linda, so we are not one hundred percent sure if they were one litter. As far as I am aware wild dogs will have between 2 and 20 pups in a litter. I believe there was initially 24 pups in the pack so that makes me believe that they were from two litters. The alpha pair are the first to mate and have pups the beta pair will also mate but these are usually an insurance policy for the alpha pair, should her litter fail. However, it would be interesting if she allowed the beta pups to join her pups, normally the alpha female would kill the beta's pups if hers survive.
