Organist Joey DeFrancesco on teaching jazz

Музыка

In part two of a five-part video interview with Joey DeFrancesco, the Philadelphia-born jazz organist talks about his first instrument and his early music education, which consisted of combination of formal training and performing with his father. The interview was taped during The Jazz Cruise 2013, on which DeFrancesco performed with his trio of guitarist Paul Bollenback and drummer Jeremy Thomas.
Interview by Irene Lee. Video production by Lee Mergner. Thanks to Michael Lazaroff and the staff of The Jazz Cruise for their help on-site.

The greatest and strangely intuitive most brilliant idea I think I've ever stumbled across improvising, is to start by choosing melody notes that are hardly ever the actual main 3 chord notes. Like, just using 1 extension on your first chord, in my ear, instantly raises red flags as to what the next extension of the next chord should be, or if and when it MUST land on a strong chord tone, and just an entire line flows out of what your ear wants to resolve each extension either from or to the previous or next chord.

Sounds like a question that 🤔a person that's really into his instrument would always question, that 1 note that changes the game. And pleasant to the ear

Joey, you are the best organ player in the world, ever. You're the Hiromi of the organ. You and her are the coolest keyboard players in the world. Seeing both of you play together would be mind blowing to me.
