Oren Lyons - "We Are Part of the Earth"
How did Oren first learn about his relationship to the Earth? Listen to his story...
This video was produced by the Sacred Land Film Project, sacredland.org, a project of Earth Island Institute. To deepen public understanding of sacred places, indigenous cultures and environmental justice, the Film Project produces a variety of media and educational materials-films, videos, DVDs, articles, photographs, school curricula and other materials. The Sacred Land Film Project uses journalism, organizing and activism to rekindle reverence for land, increase respect for cultural diversity, stimulate dialogue about connections between nature and culture, and protect sacred lands and diverse spiritual practices.
Its latest project, Standing on Sacred Ground, StandingOnSacredGround.org, is a four-part series that chronicles indigenous people in eight communities around the world standing up for their traditional sacred lands in defense of cultural survival, human rights and the environment. Watch them stand against industrial mega-projects, consumer culture, resource extraction, competing religions, tourists and climate change.

"Although we are in different boats, you in your boat and we in our canoe, we share the same river of life." - Oren Lyons, Onondaga ❤
If, we listen, quietly and respectfully to the, Old Ones', we can learn.
There is nothing on earth more meaningful to me than the wisdom and spirituality of Native Americans. I have learned so much from them and revere them for the simple message they convey that benefits all of us. Great Respect for Oren Lyons and other tribal leaders across USA!

"Nothing more meaningful". I hope you mean it as your opinion because there are more meaningful things too
Chief Oren Lyons has taught me so much. I'm very grateful to him, and to his People, for all they are doing in trying to Wake the World with their Wisdom. Thank you for this video.
His words prove the difference between schooling and true education, the difference between knowledge and wisdom. I'm a 57-year-old non-Indigenous grandmother, and his words ring true for me too.
I've watched this video so many times...Such wise message! I love Oren Lyons.

A Humble man of Peace and Wisdom ~ 💙🙏💙
I love this man's spirit ... seems like family to me.
that's deep....I have mad respect for native americans
Thank you for all your guidance. I am healing. And taking time for reflection.
I could listen him for hours. So calm and good spirit. He reminds me at my grandfather.
I grew up, during the 70s-80s, just south of the Onondaga Nation, in the Valley area of the city of Syracuse NY, in “The Valley Oaks” neighborhood development. I met Mr.Lyons during my 4 years at Syracuse University, during the late 80s - he is a wise and insightful man, a gifted orator, scholar, leader and athlete.
I am also in the Aboriginal Worldviews and Education class on Coursera. This course is changing me in profound ways. I am humbled by it. Ironically, this course is teaching me something really important: how much I don't know. This video asks such a powerful question. "Who are you? Who are you? Who are you? Is that it?" There is a big difference between being educated and being wise. Thank you for showing me my ignorance.
I love you, Oren Lyons, for this teaching! and for you.
My heart knew this my body had to catch up. My grandfather was Blackfoot I never knew him but I do now!
I'm always touched by the wisdom and humour, the calm manner of speaking, by these beautiful brothers of mine, going back a long time. The silence of nature can be thundering, at times, and so are these words of Oren Lyons. Thank you for this 🧙♀🌞🌞
Thank You
Such a beautiful reminder of a simple truth that is too easy to loose sight of. Thank you for reminding my heart and spirit.
here in my small town in south africa you speak the truth chief
hiy hiy ....... you are wise.you have a great gift
Love 💕 the Wisdom Thankyou 🪶🌲🌳🌳🌳🐾🌲🌲🌲🌿🌿🪵🌺🌎☀️🌈🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🌿🪴🪴
good story. I think the best men grow in the most difficult of conditions. As we get thru this coronavirus pandemic, I think many good men will appear.
If only the world leaders would watch this...
Thank you Chief Oren Lyons. I also am in the Coursera class "Aboriginal world Views" and as a non-aboriginal I will respectfully borrow your fishing lesson to teach my grandchildren.
Beautiful reflection, Chief Lyons. Hahom! (Thank you) -Angel Lion Heart United Confederation of Taino People
I like it. We are not only part of the Earth, we live within the Earth, inside its atmosphere. When people are sent off-world to space stations, they have to take oxygen, water and food from the Earth with them, and even then it is very hard on their bodies.
I come back every now and again.. I think this one of the best videos on KZread. The story really does give a great perspective on how we are rooted to this earth and that without it we wouldn't exist. Edit: the last part I realise is a very obvious statement but I will keep it in anyways lol peace and happiness to you all on this journey through life.

Thank you Lakota people for enduring. I am so sorry for all of this pain at the hands of my culture. Thank you for holding on to tradition. Your time is coming again soon, I feel it in my soul. Now is the time to stand up, be strong again. Turn to more old ways! Reject the B.I.A.! Reject the false monetary system! You are one of the true people, and this earth needs you! You can inspire other First Nations with your strength to stand up as well! Live with peace and love, we are one!
Blessings to those who really see & then share such teachings. Human kindness & hospitality. /\

Thank you, Oren. Beautiful.
I am also taking "the Aboriginal Worldview and Education" at coursera. His words inspire me and make me think that his (or a man's who instructed him) view of life is what the current society needs. It poses a profound and essential question that "developed" society forgot to ask: what is life, who are you? This video shows that our lives are deeply rooted into the Earth and life itself is a part of a universe. Thank your for gimme a chance to watch this video. from Japan.
Thank you for the teaching... but as importantly, for teaching me how to learn.
Sooner than we thought, the way things are going...
Another Worldviews online viewer here..loved this story, especially as I come from a family of fisherfolk. Started this course as I completed the Coursera Astrobiology course. The juxtaposition of looking out into the universe with this one of looking inward towards humans on one little planet is especially enriching. Oddly enough, both courses give perspectives on how like a tree is a human being...
Wonderful. Thank you so much.
Beautiful!
It was a humbling experience to watch this film..and gives us a lot to tink over and about. Excellent choice for the Course. Thank you
Magnificent! Oren, thank you so much as I shared this with all of my grandchildren in hopes that it may give them a true perspective on life. Again, my sincerest thank you. Fred Kail, the lacrosse sculptor

Great video, great Wisdom. We are Earth & Earth is us, Aho.
Love and admiration for this wonderful human channel of Words of Wisdom❤❤❤☮🌍
Beautiful
This is something which should be learned at school... It is really shame that only lost and tallented people go to school, people who really lost their way on the way to happiness... I hope to find some other posts like this one...
Very beautiful story and an important lesson
A'ho Wado!!

I understand about learning more from life by experiencing than by school. I almost got a job as an interpreter with the dept. of natural resources, because I knew, some things, more than did the college kids who applied, because my "classroom" was the outdoors.
I second that!
I have come to realize I am one of the rainbow people. I have been separated and tested greatly and need guidance. Please send words with the birds for the great mother says I am a tree and all the animals are under me. I am in darkness, to find my tribe and prepare to lead. I believe but people are attacking me. I was told to remember the words of the songs as we are Gods music, they keep taking my memory. Please help guide me they are taking her gifts she has given me. My sight my hearing and heart. I am in music city. I will listen closely. I WILL NEVER STOP DANCING ✌🏼💕🔥 ~ lost lil mixed Indian woman
I appreciate this video as well. I am also in the class. I feel I have already learned a great deal and the class has only just begun.
Thanks for watching and your lovely words.

Coursera has opened up a whole new world through their course- Aboriginal World views and Education. An extremely engaging course! Loving the videos.

Interdependence...what a powerful message. So different from the very cold concept of Western "individualism"--responsible for yourself, but to or for others.
He has quite a sense of humour.
Thank you Brother. Take heart in the next heaven you shall know spirit.

Few can listen today... hears even less.. In your language you can say Mother earth hears and rebels ...
Not to be rude and speak for someone else, but Coursera has linked us to this video for part of the curriculum in our Aboriginal Worldviews class. I, too, enjoyed the video and subscribed.

I know what this video is about. I am simply commenting on the background. I'm a visual person and a critical thinker, so I think a better background, one that is more relevant or has more meaning, could make a greater impact. I listened to his words, and yes, I learned something. What I wrote is my opinion, please understand it in the right context.
Correct, it is your opinion. I also noticed the background and chose to ignore it.
