Doctrine of Discovery

This short film is part of 8 short, testimonial films, on the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois.) The Iroquois are embarking on an historic project about the 500-year history of the Iroquois, their relationship with Europe and America and their prophesies that, if heard, can help us navigate the oncoming changes due to climate change. This series of short films is done via their testimony, and creates the space for the Iroquois to tell their story as they strive to uphold the traditions and the legacy of their people while also protecting the central tenents of their people and their relationship and care for the Earth.
This series was created by Tree Media in collaboration with Oren Lyons, Sid Hill and the Haudenosaunee. This series was created with the support of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation and with the support of Executive Producer Oliver Stanton. We of European decent had not known of this Doctrine Of Discovery. It wasn't taught to us in school. We heard and read the history of Columbus and others who came. Did not know of the Church claiming this doctrine and denying title to land to first nations people. I will watch more of this series and educate myself for a better understanding of Native Americans. I have been searching these things ever since a nephew married a Native woman. She's an activist for her people and very smart.

And they called the Indigenous peoples ignorant, and yet today Scientist find the ancient wisdom of the Indigenous peoples knew astronomy, medicine, and botany far superior than many scientists today who are just beginning to learn and to realize the wealth of information that was ignored

The doctrine of discovery needs to be taught in schools.

Now I understand why they never teach this in school. It’d ruin the entire history of Columbus that they want you to believe.

Thank you, this is utterly mind boggling how this injustice has been allowed to continue. It's time we the people stand up and stand together and see that justice prevails. We must make this right, somehow. Perhaps the first step might be to acknowledge the wrong done with apology. Why not entrust all national parks to first nation people . There is much that we need to open our hearts and minds to learn what we have forgotten long ago. Americans owe them everything. I pray for the day that we can stand up for what is right.

We weren’t taught this in school. The only people with integrity in this country are the indigenous people.

Here in 2021. I’m 31 and I’m finding my way to the truth. The year 2020 was a grate year with family and it did opens my eyes to all the corruption surrounding the US, and of other countries! Are we really any different? Human rights are being violated in every single country. The fight for power and wealth continues. I may be poor, but I am rich. Rich in the sense that I am blessed. Blessed to have family, food, and a roof over my head. We all need to dig for truth because you won’t learn it at any public school or university!

Morgan McCracken- Week 2 Ontario Tech University Indigenous Studies Course. The highlight of this weeks learning is the comment that "If they are not christian, they do not have have the right to title of land, they only have the right of occupancy." at 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Powerful testiimony. Thank you for making this available. It's amazing that I'm 62 and just now hearing about this. Not surprising, but good to know.

If this was so important to Christians. where in any colonised world is the doctrine of discovery taught in a school ,why was this hidden from the so-called civilised world and why did the christian Catholic church only just repudiate that same doctrine in 2023

It took an symbolic example of reflective history in a mirror story Film by James Cameron to touch upon this issue "Seen" from a "place" of understanding that caused thousands of people to carry out an internal voice driven review of the source "Code" of ones inner ethics conflicts looking upon the "seed" sources of ones own internal value strutures at the core heart of our own "Ethos".. This drove many to take a very deep look back at our own troubled history and to carry out actions to purge there influence then "see" and hear, and reflect through the strength of ones voice ones concern's as well as the discovery of source issues like the Doctrine of discovery and how they internally "burden" our collective peoples and strongly impact how the world "sees" our examples through our "Actions".. some day I hope to travel to New York and simply share dialog with the Haudenosaunee peoples to and leaders to more deeply understand. a simple thank you for sharing and Aho.
