Oregon Overlanding - Exploring the Ochoco Mountains -

On this episode my old friend and I explore the Ochoco mountains. I filmed this long form and let the shots play out instead of only showing highlights in hopes it makes you feel like you are right there with us. If you are looking to explore the Ochoco's you'll want to check this video out.

I live in Madras and for more than 15 years a group of us do an annual trip out to the Ochocos and drive those back roads in Model Ts, some our favorite trips are to the different fire lookouts. It is a great place to explore and if you catch it at the right time the wildflowers are awesome.

The Ochoco Mts. are a fun place to explore. It has been a while. Last month we ran away to the Maury Mts to get away from the smoke from the wildfires in the Cascades. It worked a little.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride. We love the Ochocos and explore them about every year (we live in Eugene). The Ponderosa pines and high meadows are incredible. You are absolutely right about investigating all the side roads (and the side roads off the side roads too!). We’ve found some amazing dispersed camp spots that way. We just finished a 5 week bucket list trip around the southwest (videos to come) and sadly too burnt out to do this year’s Ochoco trip though we do have one more trip around the east side of Three Fingered Jack with family and friends that was already planned. Personally, we just want to stay home and recuperate from our epic trip. Hahaha! Meanwhile, we look forward to seeing your 2nd Ochoco video and enjoy them through your travels.

Really enjoying your videos. We definitely share the same ethos. I love just getting a map of an area & going exploring where I simply let the trip itself guide me. I've definitely marked many, many more campsites on Gaia than I will ever use. Gaia is essential in that kind of open ended travel. I'm used to the USFS 2016 layer but I just tried the new Gaia Overland layer as my base for my Coastal Northern CA trip. This was the first time I had seen it as an option and I was surprised at how much I liked it as a base map (still have the USFS 2016). You don't know how lucky you are in OR. The trails here are like a tree with ever expanding branches - WA is much more linear with much fewer choices. Also, the North-South glacier scrape in the Northern/Central Cascades just makes the general demeanor less varied and interesting. Plus soooo much of Oregon is simply empty of people. Here in Southern OR & I'd bet it's the same in Central Eastern, there simply isn't anybody out. I can go a whole day and maybe see 1-3 vehicles, often not even that after the first mile or two.

Are you simply holding the camera out the window for some of those shots down the rear of the Jeep? Is it a GoPro because it looks quite steady? Those were some nice drone shots with the trucks below - I find it surprisingly difficult to find good opportunities to shoot those. I'm finding myself with a volume and storage management issue now that I have the drone - it sure racks up alot of photos. I'm impressed by how nicely your videos have turned out - I have zero editing experience and I've been reluctant to dive in.

  • @OverlandScout81

Yep, I have two Go Pros (9&10) and I'm manually hanging it out the window. I've tried different mounts but I feel like doing it manually gets a more engaging shot. I just purchased some DJI lapel mics that will work remotely with the go pros so I'll still be able to get the shot without wind noise. I also picked up a Sony A7Siii which is going to be really nice. Storage management is always an issue. I only store the best shots and delete the rest after each video is completed. Really appreciate the complement. I started making family videos years ago and it's grown into a great hobby. There is definitely a learning curve to editing especially when I made the jump to Final Cut Pro. You just need to start and learn as you go. I've literally poured thousands of hours researching and learning about film making. It's a passion and doesn't feel like work though. I would encourage you give it a shot and see how it goes. Happy adventures and stay safe out there my friend!

It's never wrong to turn around. Machismo and ignorance are what get most people in trouble. I have to say, I'm surprised that slope was only 21*, it was a rare example of where the camera really did show that it was steep. Those loose descents are the worst, nothing more scary than if the truck tries to slide sideways. Hill descent is probably the one thing I miss the most as it is literally humanly impossible to duplicate - very handy where you really need it. 24* side angle is pretty sketchy too.

We just finished a run at the Cline Butte OHV park and I we put the jeeps (and us) to the test. Amazing what these rigs can do. We defiantly hang it out there and push the limit from time to time but my normal approach is pretty conservative.
