Orca Slicer getting started guide: A slicer for all of your 3D printers

Check out my 2nd channel, TT Racing: / @ttracingyt
A while back, I discovered Orca Slicer, a fork of Bambu Studio that could handle Bambu Lab 3D printers as well as other Marlin and Klipper machines too. Since then, it has evolved and I have adopted it as my primary slicer.
My patron Derek asked for a beginner’s guide on migrating to Orca Slicer. In this video, we cover download and installation, first run, basic slicing, security tips and other useful features. There is plenty that’s beyond the scope of this video, but hopefully enough is covered to let you hit the ground running.

I've been experimenting with OrcaSlicer a bit recently. I've been enjoying it, and there's a lot still being done to improve it. I recently helped get a default ender 3 profile added and someone else just recently helped add multi layer elephant foot compensation which I'm really happy to hear.

i tried switching from cura with my upgraded (klipper, micro swiss direct drive and dual 5015 blower fans setup) ender 3, but no chance. even at 50 mm/s my cura profile slices better and my main reason to upgrade is faster prints. could you share your profile details?

I moved to Orca about a month ago and absolutely love it. I didn't mind Cura, but not having all settings in one massive laundry list on the side that I have to scroll through is nice. I also really like the device tab so I don't have to flip back and forth to a web browser to see what is going on in my Sonic Pad and two printers. Awesome video as always. I learned a few things today I had no idea Orca could even do that I should definitely be using!

I 've been 3D printing for a around 5 years now, being in South Africa, its not TOO widely available, we dont have all the different machines etc here, and if we get them they are very pricey, so I always look for bargains.. Long story short, I got my hands on a CR6-SE around 18months ago, I managed to get it dialed in pretty good, and its printing ok. I decided to try other slicers to see if it makes a difference, and MAN o MAN I am over the moon with the quality i get now using ORCA... I recommend it to ANYONE!!

What I want to see in slicers is a command to straighten the model along x or y on the plate. Some people convert their models slightly rotated so that it will fit on smaller plates, butt on odd angles and it is difficult to revert the rotation.... it is useful when you want to split a model, or want to resize only in one direction.

One tip about the portable Zip. It's a best practice to remove any .DLL file from the original folder before copying in the new version. Depending on the version of the new .DLL files from the updated version, you could end up with conflicting .DLL files in the folder, leading to what developers call DLL hell. It may not hit you evry time you do the copy, but it's only a matter of time befor eit does, leaving you scratching your head about why things are broken.

Hi and thanks for creating so many videos that have helped me using various slicers like Prusa slicer for my Tenlog TL-D3Pro idex printer. From what you said in this video, Orca does not currently support two print head printers or the paint on colour facility in the Prusa slicer. Are you aware of any other slicers that support two print heads and has the paint facility that Prusa has? Pruca has all the features to support my IDEX printer, but I'm always looking at other hopefully better slicers to play with.

Looks good though different than the one I downloaded some time ago. It was so confusing to try and find anything that I ended up not using it. I normally use Cura except for fixing non-watertight models. I was happy with Cura until recently when somehow it got corrupted and would no longer slice with supports. I had to delete the two folders in the appdata directory which fixed the problem, but then all my custom settings and profiles were gone and I had to recreate them. I might try Orca Slicer again depending on if they have a profile for the Ender 5 S1.

The only things I don't like about Orca, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong; No option to add an additional wall every other layer, I don't know how much this actually helps with strength and getting better adhesion between walls and infill, but in my brain, it makes sense, and I miss is. Less options for adaptive layer height than Cura. No option to choose which printer to send a print to, if more than one printer is assigned to an IP address (I have two Ender 3 V2s running Klipper off a Raspberry pi), although this is a small gripe, as I'll usually just have Fluidd open in my browser and dragging and dropping gcode files is just about as easy.

@@nobodytoyou4887 *"If it's the former that might run into an issue where I'm printing to fast and can't melt material fast enough,"* Probably not an issue. I'm not using Orca rn, just the base Bambu Studio, but therein the print speed is limited by the maximum flow set in the filament options. If you set that to the _actual maximum flow_ your rig can achieve, then the printing will never outpace how fast you can melt your filament.

Does it work for Delta printers? I have a big delta with one nozzle and 2 extruders, and would like to see how Orca compares to Cura, but SeeMeCNC isn't listed in the profile list of manufacturers.

Thank you for the video, I am trying to get the time down on prints. 40 min on cura and 1 hour with Ocra. I tried to make the setting the same. but no luck, any help?

I've got a quite heavily modified ender 3 v2 Neo with klipper and octoprint installed so i liked orca slicer especially for the "Device" tab it had... but with it i encountered retraction problems that i wasn't able to fix and had to switch back to Cura :(

Hey Micheal, i got an issue with orcaslicer, my profiles for my v0 are also linked to my v2.4 and vice versa, so i can access the v0 profiles as well as the v2.4 profiles regardless what printer i select. Goes for both filament settings and profiles. And idea how to resolve that?

Are there mods available for Orca? Specifically something like "3D Print Log" for Cura.

I'm having trouble with the filament selection, for the K1 Max I can only choose Creality Generic PLA, ABS and PETG, and I'm unsure how to work around with the different filaments from different brands rated for quite variable recommended speeds, flow rates, etc etc

I only have one question. How do you disable Motion Ability? In Prusa Slicer you have 3 options for Machine Limits. Emit to G-Code, Use for time estimate, and Ignore. I tend to use Ignore or Time estimate for my printers as I set all those settings up in my Firmware. But for Orca Slicer it seems to be defaulted to Emit to G-Code.
