Orca Encounter in Antarctica - Oceanwide Expeditions
While on an Oceanwide Expedtions cruise to Antarctica in Jan/Feb 2023, we had an incredible close encounter with 3 orcas. We had been watching from a distance as a group of about 6 orcas were hunting a humpback whale. We were stunned to be witnessing a hunt of the humpback, when 3 of the orcas broke off from the pack and seemed to come directly towards us (2 zodiacs with about 10-12 people in each). It was our final zodiac cruise of the trip as we needed to head back across the Drake Passage ahead of a weather system that was moving in. The night before, on the main boat, they showed a documentary about the southern orcas, and how the film crew witnessed a group of 4 orcas working together to hunt seals that were hiding out on a small iceberg. The orcas would swim directly at the iceberg and then together slap their tails to create a wave that would wash the seal into the water to be eaten. Luckily for us, the orcas were more curious than hungry and they didn't even bump the zodiacs with their dorsal fins. This is a compilation of everyones cell phone video from both the the zodiacs who shot in landscape mode.

Great experience Wow!!! But "Jaws" music was Not Needed..........
I would love to study Orcas! I heard their language is even more complex than humans! It's amazing how they hunt too! At least they have better teamwork than humans.

First of all, thank you for sharing your fascinating experience with us. Second, why do you add the "Jaws" music, even in a very reduced form? This movie has done enough damage to sea creatures. You were completely safe on your rafts.

The main reason people are scared of sharks. That movie caused an insane amount of misinformation to be spread like wildfire and everyone acted like it was true. You're more likely to die by a coconut falling on your head.

@AfroWizardADV that's not necessarily true, people don't know they're around sharks the majority of the time. Sharks are not the monsters jaws made them out to be. Less than a dozen people die every year from shark bites. 99.99% of which were directly caused by the humans actions, then people blame the shark. It's ridiculous and ignorant.

Goodness that was scary and the music did not help. It would have been an orca feast if they capsized a boat.

That person was terrified that the orcas were going to flip our boat. We had watched a documentary the night before that showed how the southern killer whales work together to go after seals by flipping or swamping the ice they are sitting on. I think that was on everyone's minds as the orcas checked us out.

Nope nope nope. Ive seen what these things do to seals. If they felt like it they could so easily flip that boat and eat you. Or you die of hypothermia.
