As an Irish Republican I respect Loyalists right to celebrate their Britishness on the 12th. Looks to me like they have a great day and as long as it stays peaceful I can't see what harm they do. We will never have a United Ireland if we don't respect each others culture. Hatred doesn't hurt the person you hate it just hurts yourself. N. Agreed. Context is everything. Used to see them walking on the 12th in Rossknowlagh , Co Donegal in the Republic. No one bothered them and holidaymakers would turn out to watch quite happily. When the nation is one day reunited , we should tolerate and even encourage the continuation of this tradition. These are Irish people who belong here and will be a part of us long after the British have left.

My father's from Scotland. All of his siblings, a bunch of cousins. But their families came out of Mayo. After a generation or two in the States they identify now, of course, as Irish. To me, there's no mistaking these parades for the kind of carnivals and street celebrations one finds in Milwaukee or Madrid or Marseilles. The tunes and banners , drums and sashes notwithstanding, the 12th Day Parades are typically, historically, and iconically Irish. Irreversibly Irish.. Except as replicas of these, they don't do these anywhere else on earth, certainly not in Britain. So contrary to what people might be inclined to think, the 12th Day Parades are not British, they're Irish. In spirit, in form, in fact for as long as history lasts.

Some of the songs are magnificent and I can't see anything wrong with celebrating historical events in small groups as long as it doesn't degenerate after a few bevvies into an evening abusing catholic neighbours. Absolutely the same goes for the Catholics if they want marches commemorating hunger strikes or 1918 0r 1937 or whatever. It's time to leave the past in the past though. People should not be lambasted for the actions of their Great grandfathers, grandfathers or even fathers. It's time to live in peace together. The UK should allow NI to be reunited with the Republic BUT only if anyone who does not want to be a part of a Irish Republic is offered like for like accommodation/housing on the mainland of Britain. The Republic will be satisfied it. The Nationalists in NI will also. The Loyalists will not like it but at least they get to keep their British nationality until the day they die and they will also get to live on the British mainland IF THEY chose not to live in a united Ireland. I cannot see any other fair way of settling this issue!! Btw I'm a Brit, a protestant and someone who totally believes that the Royal family is an absolute positive for the UK.

@William Taggart No one or very few believe that loyalist should leave the north and go to England ( there wouldn’t be the welcome there that you may think there is ) Eventually Ireland will be reunited , The best thing then is to leave everything as is regarding flags etc , Loyalist continue with their flag and culture/ events etc . The 12 th could become a big national holiday where all could enjoy the orange culture without either side feeling threatened . Future generations should live in peace and harmony and enjoy what life has to offer. Follow much the same as happens now in the rugby .

I would like to think and it would be nice is the street band open to anybody to come on Watch and join in or is it just two things that you do amongst yourself enjoyed watching the parade in this KZread clip do you go to one of the churches after the parade where people can meet you and shake your hand and have a cup of tea and coffee or a biscuit together I don't know what happens at the end of the parade we don't see this sort of thing in England as long as everybody is made welcome and friendly it's really good what you're doing

I'm sure most of them Bowler hat men are unemployed. How the mighty fall.

read about this cultural parade here in san fransisco it looks to be a very serious parade and all those colours i cant see how this would offend catholics iam really enjoying it i would like to be part of this one day its a celebration of a battle which took place in this country nothing wrong with that the point is one side the bad man was king james and the good side was king william of orange was so bad about that the catholics of this country needs to take a chill pill

@Martin James Yes it’s Ireland , but these people’s ancestors who were from England and were planted in Ireland , so as the elite in Westminster could continue to steal and plunder . These Loyalists never woke up to the fact that they were and are. used by Westminster . They are just seen as useful idiots .

@@Dannydantimpat Angles but NOT Saxons moved to the EASTERN parts of lowland Scotland and formed the Northern segment of Bernicia. But they didn't move to the Western lowlands which comprised Alt Clut (aka "Strathclyde") at the time. It also included Cumbria, now in England. It was a Brythonic kingdom speaking what's now called "Old Welsh". That's why we have a clutch of place names in Western central Scotland which look Welsh. They are from the same Brythonic source as modern Welsh. "Anglo-Saxon" was a fusion of languages and culture which occurred in England but not in Scotland, as there were no Saxons. The "Planters" in Ireland around 1,000 years later were predominantly from the Western lowlands of Scotland -Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Dunbartonshire (as then called) and Galloway.

@For god and Ulster That was nearly 50 years ago. Opinion polls today in England think Ireland should and will be united . I am from Perth Western Australia and we have a lot of young Northern Irish from both Christian factions who think Ireland will be one country in the near future.

Give me a break BlueBlood. No I don't know street names in Belfast living here in America*. But I do have warranted belief that what I see on American TV when they broadcast and report (al Jeezera and BBC too on cable TV) of Loyalist marches into areas inhabited by Catholics are accurate. I guess you cant comment on US actions in Iraq (which I was never a fan of) since you don't live in Baghdad? *except Cromwell Road I stayed in a guest house there, nice people dont know which community.

@@geo752 They're not. They're northern Irish or whatever. A lot of them can't really identify what they are. British people are primarily from England Scotland and Wales. Probably the surrounding isles as well I imagine. Certain people in the six counties are not British regardless of what they tell you. The proper name for the UK is: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As you can see from the name, there is a separation between the two.
