    Been watching your videos for a while and you seem like one of the most knowledgeable guys on KZread, on the topics of Minoxidil, Finasteride and hair loss in general. So my question is.. does or can finasteride regrow back lost hair? I've never taken anything for my hairloss.. started shedding like crazy last year, when I had daily panic attacks for 3-4 months straight.. a few months after getting over my anxiety (going back to normal state) that's when I started shedding. Sadly my dad has no hair on his crown, but he first began losing hair in his late 40's (I was 32, now 33) he is now 64 and still have a desent amount of hair except for the crown area. I think I have speed up that hairloss, process by having so much stress last year. I have lost a lot of hair specially on the crown area and overall thinning. Do you have a video that talks about regrowth from finasteride? if so what is the title of that video? Sorry for the long read. Keep up the good videos.

    I just looked at your video from last week or from Sep. 6. and you claim to have had some regrowth of lost hair.. that's awesome. Question is just how much of your lost hair has grown back.

    Thank you and yes finasteride can regrow hair in about 33 percent of people. For most other people it will prevent any further hair loss but the good news about regrowth in your case is that regrowing hair on the crown is typically much easier than regrowing it on the hairline. I don't think I have covered the topic specifically on hair regrowth but if you're new to the game probably should just hop on fin and give it about 6 months to see if you get any hair regrowth from it and if so that may be the only thing you ever have to use. If it isn't enough then you can consider a hair growth stimulant like minoxidil but definitely try fin first.

    Thanks, Kevin, for your very prompt and very detailed replies. I had a lot of reservations about starting minoxidil as a treatment (concerning anything from the alleged negative effects on one's cardiovascular health to the ease of application) but you have allayed many of my concerns and now I feel reasonably comfortable using the Rogaine foam. Cheers! Out of interest, are the side effects of oral minoxidil (which were enough to dissuade you from talking it) not present in topical minoxidil (although less pronounced)?

    Using nizoral shampoo daily, and a lasercomb daily also help. I myself would also recommend a daily Collagen powder supplement in the morning/ evening. Vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C supplement also. HIIT exercise 3 times a week. And brush teeth every night. Avoid alcohol, sugar, white flour products, and if possible: caffeine. Continue all the above, get a good job and if needed you can get a hairtransplant in a few years if needed.

    Kevin, 2 questions for you. I'm 41 (42 next month) and started having aggressive diffuse thinning starting at 36. I finally took the plunge and started finasteride over 2 weeks ago (zero side effects btw). I also bought a 3 month supply of minoxidil (liquid pump), but am unsure as to whether or not I should hold off on starting minoxidil and wait until I start to see some results from the finasteride (which I'm not expecting to see for several months, if at all), or should I immediately incorporate minoxidil into my daily routine to work in conjunction with the finasteride that I recently started taking? What do you recommend and why? 2nd question: I have a scalp issue. I think it's either Seborrheic eczema/dermatitis or Psoriasis (not sure which one). I used to use Head and Shoulders, which did clear up the condition, but also thinned out my hair even worse within 2 short months. If I don't treat this condition, will finasteride and minoxidil work if my scalp is scaling/flaking and the pours are clogged/scarred? Which shampoo/conditioner do you recommend I use? I've been using Millcreek Biotene H-24. While it thickens my existing hair, it doesn't clear up my scalp condition. I've heard of Nizoral and Regenepure, but I'm scared to use anything that's too harsh (with sulfur or tar), but I realize that no hair regrowth will occur if my scalp isn't treated, or will it? Btw, you biceps are looking damn impressive.

  • @haircafekevin

    @haircafekevin

    Hey thank you, I would hold off on the minoxidil not only because its a pain in the ass to use but it will probably make your dandruff and scalp issues even worse. I would consider trying 1 or 2 percent nizoral and just using it twice per week as it is great at treating scalp inflammation even if its not very useful for hair loss. Inflammation isn't related to male pattern baldness but it certainly doesn't help but if you treat the inflammation any issues you had with it, including hair loss should reverse which should allow you to focus more on treating your actual genetic male pattern baldness and once you treat that then you can consider topicals like minoxidil. I use coal tar shampoo nearly daily and every now and then I'll use nizoral for dandruff and it works. Another thing I felt worked pretty well was nizoral cream since it stays on the scalp longer. Also, getting a shower comb or brush can help get rid of some of the dandruff.

    Hey Kevin. I've recently had a few comments about my hairline and hair thickness and after looking at my hair I'm around a norwood 2/2.5. My hair is still somewhat thick with just recession at the temples and hairline with some hairline thinning at one side. I have decided to take finasteride as I responded great to minoxidil and grew my hairline back but with being a student I couldn't fit the liquid minox into my routine as I'm either out in the morning or at night with friends. Do you think finasteride will be able to help maintain my hair and possibly regrow where my hairline is thinning?

    Ok, I expect that this really will be the last question. I've only recently begun using Minoxidil (Regaine Foam) so it's prompted a few. What advice would you give someone who works out a lot re application? I box 4-5 times a week and each time that I do, I sweat profusely. I've noticed that this is causing my sweat to taste different (when you are doing intensive circuit training or sparring, it's nigh on impossible to not ingest a little bit of your own sweat). I am almost certain that it is the Minoxidil doing this. So I am toying with the idea of washing my head before training (to rinse out the Minoxidil - at least the residue that has attached to my hair) and then reapplying post-shower, which I have after the training session. But it means having no minoxidil on my head for 2-3 hours during the time that I train. Is that something I should be concerned with as far as hair loss prevention is concerned?

  • @haircafekevin

    @haircafekevin

    4 жыл бұрын

    You don't need to have minoxidil on your scalp all day, minoxidil has a 23 hour half life and frankly you can easily just get away with using it once per day despite the twice per day recommendation. Even if you are sweating and tasting the solution that doesn't mean the minoxidil didn't already absorb into the scalp, the residue left over is the solution that the minoxidil is in rather than the minoxidil itself. If it concerns you then I would probably just apply the minoxidil an hour before going to bed. Minoxidil foam dries quickly so you can just apply it, let it dry and then wash it out the next day. I only apply minox once daily with full scalp coverage and I didn't notice any loss from switching from twice per week to once per week.

    @Kevin Mann hoping you'll make that video about other (non dht related) causes of hair loss and what can be done about it. i'm a nw0 with diffuse thinning across my entire scalp, where the sides and donor area are equally affected. i was on 1mg fin daily for a year (without sides) and it did absolutely nothing to halt my hair loss. minoxidil seems like an option but any gains are likely to be temporary and won't address the root cause of my thinning. fwiw, thyroid and other basic blood tests came back normal and i'm at my wit's end at this point, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

    Just getting this today/researching Monixidil. Thanks for posting what you know,. 10 mgs and above are usually prescribed for Hypertension. Oral amounts of .25 to 1.25 mg are prescribed for hair growth in women. I can't find an amount for men, you say 2.5 to 5 mgs. I saw that too. You say you had a crazy result. Did you try lesser dosages? Also, what about using the pill to increase the amount of minoxidil in Rogain? Using a higher mg. amount topically would not have the same adverse effects as orally. Potentially you could limit/control the reaction to the scalp. what do you think? Buy a 5 mg pill and dissolve it in the 1 month supply of rogaine. increase or decrease as you see fit.

    Forgive me but I have one last question. Given that you are so well versed in this stuff, do you mind confirming whether quartering a 5 mg Finasteride tablet and taking 1.25 mg daily will detract from its efficacy when compared with taking a 1 mg tablet- because it does not have the film coat that a non quartered tablet would? The reason I quarter a 5mg tablet is that it's a lot cheaper to do so. Also, would you advise taking at night on an empty stomach? I've been taking it in the morning around the time I have breakfast and I wonder if that detracts from its effectiveness.

  • @haircafekevin

    @haircafekevin

    4 жыл бұрын

    No problem and no, film coat or no the dose of a quartered proscar is 1.25 which is roughly the same in effectiveness as 1 mg due to the diminishing returns of the drug. Any difference is negligible. I asked my doctor about timing and he told me its best to try to take it the same time every day but it doesn't matter if you take it with or without food. There are drugs that are affected by food intake but finasteride is not one of them.

As I seen really good reviews and heard oral minox is really good for gains. I’ve been on 0.5 oral for 3 months, then 1mg for 3 months, doctor is prescribing 2.5mg now. I have still been using a of topical as I am slightly worried that if I stopped the topical I would lose all my ground from the previous years/routine. Atm am going through a shed. What do you think?

    FYI, I live in Warsaw and here top trichologist & dermatologist is prescribing oral minoxidil - I guess it's compounded on demand. Loniten cannot be prescribed anymore in Poland and was withdriven from pharmacies due to risk of side effects. I tried to make appointment with this doctor (for androgenic alopecia), but it's not possible due to long queue. I've heard good opinions and read on doctor website that "the patient health is most important". The funny thing is, patients (mostly women) are taking oral minox and are satisfied because they see regrowth. In any case, doctor will not take responsibility for side effects, especially that another top profesor of dermatology is promoting oral minoxidil and was participating in latest clinical studies. Not to mention, people on forums are bragging about drinking topical minoxidil.

    Hey, I would definitely not stop minoxidil but adding stemoxydine might be a good idea as its mechanism of action is different from minoxidil so you can stack the two. Stemoxydine also doubles as a very good solvent for experimentals like RU58841. Both minoxidil and stemoxydine are hair growth stimulants but stemoxydine is certainly not a replacement for minoxidil if you are already using minoxidil.

I'm tired of reading and searching for cures or treatments but there's close to nothing aside from setipiprant and trinov, I've tried trinov, it didn't show any results and quit using it because it's expensive, but keep in mind is a watered down version of the real Dr broztu lotion, just because the real thing needed to go through clinical trials and all that painfully long process. The role of PGD2 in AGA is not clear. Setipiprant is a CRTH2 aka GPR44 aka PTGDR2 aka DP2 inhibitor, not a PGD2 inhibitor. Not only did setipiprant fail to grow hair in the study by Allergan, but another study that was published in February of this year stated that the PTGDR2 receptor "is not overexpressed in our patients. Perhaps research on treatment should focus on drugs that target PTGDS activity and not PTGDR2." This also suggests that the original finding of elevated PTGDR2 in men with AGA was incorrect.

    Almost anything is possible, but there is no data to support any of those maneuvers. Any dose related side effects would probably be less likely if you lower the dose, or take less oral minoxidil by cycling on and off. But some side effects, like pericardial effusion (fluid around the heart) may not be dose related. We just don't know and we really need a large prospective safety study of low-dose oral minoxidil, which hasn't been done. Also, I don't know of any way to mitigate against the side effects with other drugs. So I still recommend staying away from it altogether.

    RU58841 as far as I know has never caused blindness in humans. For your research specimen though KB solution as well as a PG and Ethanol solution will certainly work as a carrier. Minoxidil can work as a carrier but it is a bit hard to mix, it works better when you put it in the freezer. Stemoxydine and alfatradiol are also good carriers and they also work by themselves to fight male pattern baldness and unlike minoxidil from my experience at least your hair follicles do not become addicted to them like minoxidil since they work differently. Stemoxydine works by stimulating hypoxia which causes hair growth (granted it is not as strong as minoxidil) and alfatradiol is a topical anti-androgen, its not as powerful as RU58841 but it does help and its been proven to be comparable to at least 2 percent minoxidil in terms of how much hair is regained.

Its also 3 grand which is almost as much as a hair transplant and hair transplants are permanent since the hair comes from the DHT resistant side and back of he scalp. I'm not saying its BS or doesn't work but for the price I'd rather just get a hair transplant. I have had an FUE and I am pleased with the results.

    @Kevin Mann, Hey Kevin what ur thoughts on low dosage of oral minoxidil like 2.5 per day. I want to switch to oral from topical though i have been topical since more than 2 years. In long run its making my hair dry & frizzy, changing hair texture. I started my Finasteride since 2 months after listening your views & since then i can see lot of hair growth & thickness. I really appreciate your work My hair & I got a new life all because of you. I have got huge respect for you man.

    Saw a renown hair loss Dr today cos I freaked out after watching videos on hair miniaturisation. I used to have thick strands but as the years go, the individual strands becomer thinner. Thankfully he says that I do not have female pattern hair loss and surprisingly also no miniaturisation (makes me wonder what that truly means now) and says prescribing me some minoxidil will help me to thicken up my hair. I am already using minoxidil to lower my hair line a bit and thicken my eyebrows and it's working. I am feeling excited to try the oral one to help thicken my hair so it does not fly away in the wind haha.

    I’ve been using topical minoxidil for a few weeks now and I’ve got fast heart beats. I can’t physically exercise without my heart feeling heavy/somebody holding it and now I feel like I have fluid building up in my lungs and I’m constantly coughing several times throughout the day. It sucks I have to drop minoxidil cause if I don’t, I will die. It still goes systemic very similarly to the oral version.

    The studies done on collagen suppression were in vitro studies which doesn't mean they're not legitimate but the quality of data isn't as good as outcome data via in vivo studies. There is a lot of data you can simulate in a test tube or petri dish that won't necessary be replicated when tested on actual human beings. Personally I have not had any side effects from minoxidil and I think a lot of the claims online have more to do with a nocebo effect and people mistaking regular aging or sun exposure with minoxidil side effects.

    I've been experiencing shedding from finasteride after 1 and a half months. The hair that is falling is thick and has a white bulb at the end from all over the top of my scalp. I haven't noticed any falling from the sides or my donor area but my body hair seems weaker. Could this be Telogen Effluvium and do you think finasteride can cause this in some cases?

  • @haircafekevin

    @haircafekevin

    4 жыл бұрын

    Its rare but finasteride can slow growth of body hair and facial hair as those hairs are actually benefitted by DHT. In most cases it doesn't matter as once the hair is developed it isn't affected by androgens anymore but in some cases it does slow growth of facial and body hair. From what you describe it sounds like you're just going through an initial shed and it would premature to jump to any conclusions before giving your hair some more time to stabilize, I'd give it at least 3-6 months and if things still haven't improved then you should probably see a doctor to see if your hair loss is caused by something else besides male pattern baldness. All hair loss treatments that work will oftentimes induce an early anagen phase which is premature growth of new hairs which causes the old hairs to fall out, its nothing to be alarmed about and it will eventually stabilize but it can take several months so you have to be patient. The white bulb you see at the end of your hair is just skin that is part of the hair follicle lining, I have seen it in my own hair and it is common in all people, its not necessarily a sign of telogen effluvium.
