A distinct demonstration of why libraries, museums, and collections are invaluable. When you hear of a politician 'removing funding', or even 'deleting findings' from research, then what they are actually doing is 'robbing our future' of its ability to learn. Truly wonderful vlog. Remarkable images.

*tips head* It seems to be related to the position of the nose vs the position of the irises. If the nose is on the same side of the face that the irises are in the eye socket, the figure is looking away. If they're opposite, the figure is looking at the viewer.

When you take into account the deliberate mistake of not having the eyes slightly warp with the direction of the face it removes the romanticised idea of this being entirely up to the viewers perception or contextual clues. All the eyes are drawn to very closely resemble a front-facing perspective. This is easily noticeable as the farthest eye from the viewer will always hang off the edge of the face. They don't work with both left and right facing faces. They actually work with neither; which is why this works... if that makes sense.

Eamon Burke To me it's more like the category of gaze direction does not apply to flat surfaces. Of course I can tell that the person in the picture is looking at the viewer but the illusion of being looked at quickly breaks down when I'm off-axis. However, this doesn't have anything to do with the topics discussed in the video.

There seem to be two mechanisms at work here. One is simple perspective compensation. If the pupils are closer to the left corner of the eye and the nose is pointing straight at the "camera", we assume the eyes are looking left. But if the nose is pointing to the opposite side, we assume the eyes simply turned to compensate for the angle of the head, and are therefore looking more or less straight at us. But there's another, slightly "dishonest" thing going on. Most of those portraits are significantly cross-eyed. One eye is more centred, and appears to be looking at the viewer (i.e., at the artist) while the other is looking slightly to one side (in one case, they're even looking at different _heights_). It seems that, depending on the lower half of the face, we give priority to one of the eyes, and ignore the fact that the other one is looking in a different direction. If you cover the bottom of the face you'll notice the mismatch between the eyes quite easily.

mcol3 Since a painting is 2D rather than 3D like a sculpture, the same image is seen no matter what angle you look from. Looking at a painting from 30 degrees to the left just causes its width to shrink rather than actually turning the model.

The direction the eyes are facing does not change if you look at the whites of the eyes. The illusion comes from the viewer mentally seeing each picture as entirely separate from the last one. Because we deal with so many people on a daily basis ,and each person acts differently, we become accustomed to people looking at each other in different ways. For example, some people tend to squarely face whoever they are focusing on whereas others tend to focus from the side. At the same time, each person also acts differently depending on their mood, how hungry they are, how much sleep they've had, etc... The result is that we see eye direction and do a comparison with the direction the face is pointing, the expression of the face, and what it has to do with our current relation to its apparent attention.

" In portraits, the phenomena of direction with reference to the spectator, and corresponding change of apparent position in space when he moves to either side, depend precisely on the same principles. A nose drawn directly in front with its central line upright, continues directed to the spectator, though viewed obliquely. Or, if the right side of the nose is represented, it must appear directed to the right of the spectator in all situations ; and eyes that turn in a due degree from that direction toward the spectator, so as to look at him when viewed in front, will continue to do so when viewed obliquely"

4:38 I disagree here. Although the portrait's overall posture seems to be facing to it's right, he is still looking to his left. only, he appears to be looking at the viewer, because instead of his right shoulder being positioned slightly forward, as it is in the first, his left is. This gives us the illusion that his looking left in directed toward the viewer.

Anyone has an explanation for this? All I can think of is that when viewed at an angle, the result on the portrait is that it elongates on the vertical axis vis-a-vis the horizontal axis. So from my perspective (no pun) the follow-me-around-the-room "illusion" is not really an illusion but a testament to the fact that human brains can recognize a wide range of facial shapes, as one would naturally expect from an otherwise healthy individual.
