That song Anak has a spanish version. Actually it was translated to so many languages.
It's weird to have sireyna translated literally. Sireyna is a slang of being effiminate or gay. And families then punished them by dunking them in drums of water to try to remove this "gayness" and straighten them out. But the message is - "nobody can breathe longer than me" alluding to their being able to develop the ability to hold their breathe long due to the constancy of their being punished. It's actually their being able to adopt and instead of having who they are buried or shamed they emerge as mermaids - with the capacity to breathe under water - strong sirens!!! It's a gay pride song!

The song Kanlungan always brought me to tears. All my childhood memories are flashing backs. The playing in the rain, flying kites during summer vacation, adventures in so many rivers with tour your childhood friends. No cellphones, no internet, just pure childhood fun.
Anak by Freddie Aguilar is the only Filipino song that has 55 versions in 26 languages. When it was released in 1978, it became a sell out in the Philippines, USA, Europe and Japan.
Basils voice has lost a lot of it's resonance with age, but in exchange, the song feels more heart felt than it ever was. I recommend checking Basil sing the same song in his prime. It's a totally different experience.

Noel Cabangon's Kanlungan is very nostalgic. I actually have tears when typing this comment. 😥😂 The song is a memory of our childhood. When we were kids, waking up after a siesta. We would go out and play with the other neighbor's kids who we grew up and are really close with. We would climb a mango tree, jump into a river, play in the rain, hit an empty lata with our flip flops, gather around for some boiled camote for merienda and a storytelling before we go back to our respective homes. The smiles and laughter though. And, you can't wait to do it all over again the next day. 😀🤗🥰

To answer Efra's question... Filipinos are very sentimental, emotional and romantics by nature and their music will always depict that feeling... Most filipino songs were made from personal stories (by the artists themselves) that's why even those with simplest musicality has a way of touching its listeners.
@JohnSmith-pk4xy

Maharlikans are great poets whose music can touch the heart.
Serena is a colloquial term used to call “gay” people in the Philippines.
i suggest you announce ahead of time what filipino songs you're going to react to next.. so that we can translate it for you guys, it may not be perfect but at least its better than google (w/punctuation)😅
"Anak" has been translated to 29 languages all over the world. Timeless song a Filipino artist has ever written and Sung. This song will live on FOREVER ❤️
The last song made me cry. I had an existential crisis when I first heard Noel Cabangon's song. Up until now, it makes me feel melancholic. It tells you how time flies and how short life is. You have to live your life to the fullest and make sure to serve your purpose because you can't turn back time. A wonderful song.
"Minsan mas lalake pa sa lalake ang Bakla" Sometimes, being Gay makes you more manlier than a man *Mic Drop* When Sirena was released back then, it was such a controversial song but not in a bad way. It had people talking about the Gay community beyond what we knew of them. The Philippines has always been pretty accepting of the LGBT community but you can't deny that in those days, most elderlys still had partiarcal views. "I am a mermaid, a drum of water is where I dive, strong arms are what keep on pounding me" This was such genius writing. It's pertaining to the fact that this child (who is gay) views himself as a mermaid who goes diving and that he's beautiful. It's a way of viewing the fact that he was being beaten and drowned in a drum of water by his father, in a more optimisitc way. "Upuan" or Chair by Gloc-9 is amazing too!!
Sirena was about the hardships and torments of discrimination towards gay people, sad but it still exists here and what's worse is that discrimination comes from their own parents especially the fathers but in the end the gay son would be the one to take care of their parents when they get old.

Basil's voice in it's prime was truly one of the best. That's why I love his songs. My fave song of him is "You"
Rico J Puno- known as “the total entertainer”, because in his performances all the members of the family enjoy, from sons to great grandfathers. He has that charm. He also is fond of adult humour in his concerts. Basil Valdez can sing from courtship, dating, weddings and funerals. He is wholesome and also an icon like Rico J but in a tame way. Ngayon at Kailanman had been sung by Regine. Rico J has also a great version. The song is epic. Please check Basil’s repertoire. Translate those Tagalog lyrics. Anak by Freddie Aguilar is arguably the most translated song from the Philippines. Because of its universal message, Anak has been sung in a hundred different languages. He has a lot of hits that until now are being sung in videokes all around the Philippines. There was even a movie by a famous korean actor with Anak as the prime song in its OST. Kuh Ledesma introduced the very young Lea Salonga in her concert. She has a hollywood movie with Mel Gibson. That’s how big she is in the 80’s. Till I met you is the song where Regine sung with guitarist Ric Mercado that you reacted to. Noel Cabangon’s Kanlungan’s message you should translate, such a universal message. I would imagine that aliens would listen to OPM classics and actually discover their eye/s can shed a tear.
In fact, 'ANAK' by Freddie Aguilar is translated in lots of language. I'm filipino living in Italy, and this song is played on national radio.

Ngayon at Kailanman is a wedding vow. You gotta listen to his original record way back when he was younger. Basil's voice is one in a million.
When u dont understand the lyrics and yet ur crying...thats the power of music.
Rico Puno( The way we were), best male vocalist in his time, Basil Valdes ( wish bus) is also the most sought after vocalist back then, Kuh Ledesma ( Till i met you) b4 anybody it was her who is the queen, thats her song , Freddie Aguilar, (the long hair) he composed that song and became an icon song, translated in so many languages!
Marco Sison, Basil Valdez, Leo Valdez, etc were some of the classics of decades ago
Ugoy ng Duyan is also cool . It always makes me cry, i love my mother the most.... But she's already gone....
Rico Puno was our family friend RIP 🥲 Puno means Tree. One of 🇵🇭 best in my opinion. He visited us and did a personal concert in 🇨🇦with his band in the 80s 😍
The song Anak depicts the joy, love and sacrifices of parents for the child, then the child growing up, rebelled and gone astray and realizing his/her mistakes, went back to his/her parents, something similar to the story of the "Prodigal Son".

Anak is such an iconic song that every Filipinos know it
My most fave lyrics in "Ngayon at Kailanman" is: "Bakit labis kitang mahal, pangalawa sa maykapal.." (Why I love you so much, next to God) ..ugghhh🥰🥰
Kanlungan, mygaaahd. This song takes every Filipino back to their yesterdays. A trip down memory lane. A very nostalgic song. The lyrics are very poetic.
😂😂listen to your parent… i adore your mama and papa for bringing up you lovely two human beings
The sirena in this song is referring to a gay man- how he survives in an environment where accepting who he really is, is an everyday struggle, but he wouldn’t let anyone take that away from him..

... when you realize "Sirena" is a beki song 😆
basil valdez's original piece of "ngayon at kilanman" will definitely give you goosebumps and will make your eyes leak.. hihi
Kuh Ledesma used to be a nurse who liked singing even while dispensing her duties. She came from the same province as I, Negros Occidental. I think she was discovered when someone heard her sing inside the hospital. She had sold out concerts in the 1980s and was at the peak of her career when Hollywood came knocking. She appeared in the Academy-Award winning film, The Year of Living Dangerously which was shot in the Philippines in 1983.
That's what makes gloc 9 amazing. Every song he wrote has a lesson and very relatable. He made sure that he is heard. Love his music.
Joey Albert’s OPM is highly recommended
Basil Valdez was the lead singer of a Rock Band, the Circus Band. They were performng rock songs. But Basil Valdez is classically trained. When the band separated, all the members became successful as individual artists. And all of them became huge OPM artists. Basil Valdez is the biggest of them all.
Great playlist, never seen these videos. A background on Philippine music, whilst the west had their opera, Filipinos were writing soulful *Kundiman* songs with poetic verses reminiscent of love songs, a prayer to God, or to the motherland because they've longed to be free from the oppression of the conquistadors. This is probably why they sing mostly melancholic ballad songs. Also to serenade someone, it is a tradition to sing to them under their window with a guitar and a band in the dead of night, this is called *Harana.* One of the popular song called *"Dahil Sa'Yo"* (Because of You) was also sung by Nat King Cole and Julio Iglesias. Philippine folklore music is also popular amongst international choir and chorale competitions.
"Anak" became a finalist in the first MetroPop Song Festival. It went on to become very popular in the Philippines and eventually abroad. The song generated a hundred cover versions, was released in 56 countries and in 27 different foreign languages, and is claimed to have sold 30 million copies.

There's also Nonoy Zuñiga, Zsa-Zsa Padilla. Not to mention singers who sing heart broken/desperate songs ( not my type of songs but l find the songs, lyrics, performance incredibly well done that l listen to them anyway!): Imelda Papin, Dulce, Eva Eugenio, etc. including Vernie Varga. I'm in admiration of the composers, arrangers, musical directors behind these songs. Glad you're enjoying them. We've not forgotten them and are always super glad to see them perform.
Basil, such a powerful voice. I live in EU now and this gave me a good cry.soo nostalgic 😢
NOEL KABANGON🇵🇭🇵🇭 the last of the filipino folk genre maker ... his song is like "THE COUNTRY MUSIC" of the philippines ... i listen to his songs ON THE ROAD, while driving ... its peaceful and its so refreshing, im a farm boy and his songs always makes me remember the smell of the farm lands, the breeze of the rice fields, the chirps of the birds, the taste of fresh fruit, its just makes me feel so NOSTALGIC of something ...
If you watch a newer video of Kuh Ledesma singing the same song, you'll see that she still looks and sounds the same. She is one of the Filipino singers that both Regine Velasquez and Lea Salonga look up to. Also, you should check out the song's songwriter, Odette Quesada. She has written a ton of songs that became OPM classics. She also has performances of her own songs on the Wish Bus.

Include Cecile Azarcon’s compositions Like I think I am In Love, Lift Up Your Hands, Even If, Ikaw Lahat Sa Akin, How Did You Know and among others. THese songs were made popular by Gary V, Martin Nievera, Jam Morales, Kuh Ledesma.
I’m not surprised at all how Basil’s voice could overwhelm Waleska. Basil is considered a Philippine treasure in music. He’s a cancer survivor. In the 80’s and 90’s, you typically hear his songs performed in singing contests. I even witnessed 3 grand finalists singing his songs in one night.
This is "nostalgia" for me! Late 70's to early 80's...college (university) life. Too bad, Rico Puno passed on but left us beautiful music to listen and help us look back the past with a smile on our faces. ❤️

Freddie Aguilars Anak was the soundtrack to a 2014 korean film starring Lee Min Ho titled Gangnam 1970....Anak was so popular in the 70s by the way that other countries made their own version of the song in their native language.
His voice - albeit still beautiful, is noticeably a bit different due to his age. Basil Valdez and his song "Ngayon At Kailan Man" (Now And Forever), became the standard of love songs in the late 1970's and onwards for a long time. This song is immortal and is one of the more popular songs sung in Karaoke clubs even today.

Yes, Anak song is beautifully written by Freddie Aguilar, its like a poetic song with too much depth in it. Agree with you, it's like it was written by a philosopher who wants to impart wisdom on youths. The translation doesn't even give justice to how beautiful the lyrics were written. Indeed, we need to bring this kind of music again. It is so hard to explain how beautiful it's made because the composition of this song is exceptionally and wonderfully mind-blowing.
You should watch Basils singing the song when he was younger, it's different. And with lyrics, the lyrics is great too.... It's like, now and forever, i promise to love you my love now and forever. Now and forever, you wont be alone anymore, my love..

Ngayon at Kailan man, such a beautiful song, written in deep Tagalog.
I appreciate you guys! I was born in the Philippine and left 1983. Basil, Freddie and the old school stuff were and still are my favorite singers. Philippines 🇵🇭 is a well known ballad music country. The reason why Filipinos are the greatest singers is because of these guys. PLEASE CONTINUE DOING THESE TYPE OF REVIEWS . GOD BLESS.
I remember when I first heard "Kanlungan" in a radio when I was a little kid, tears suddenly fell to my eyes, even though I don't understand it that much because the lyrics talks about the past and as a kid I don't have the kind of past yet that I can reminisce but.. the song just pull out sad emotions on me, like a bittersweet feelings I don't understand back then. I was literally a small child back then, not attending school yet.
'Sirena', yes it's mermaid in English. But in this song, it simbolizes LGBT. Specially Gays. Because in the Philippines in older time. Gays aren't accepted, specially in their family. So their father, torture them. Like it said in the lyrics they were pushed in a drum of water. I don't know, but one of the reason is because in older days. Man must the one should work in the family, so their father expected them to be tough, strong and masculine. Also the game 'chinese garter' in the lyrics is usually a girl's game. So boys that good in that game, will be teased as gays.

Good for you guys for listening to a Filipino music without understanding the lyrics although the lyrics of old OPM are very good and inspiring. 👍👍👍
Regine looks up to Kuh Ledesma. Mesmerized by Kuh's singing, Regine idolized her too. You know Bazil Valdez and Regine sang ANAK in a live performancece. That one you need to see!

I love that your YT channel features the OPM classics singers. These people are incredibly talented. And deserves to be featured and recognized by younger audiences. Thank you.
Kanlungan is a song of reminiscing, if you heard it, you’ll be back to where you came from, like your childhoods, everything. Love that song, never gets old..
Please do Wency Cornejo - “Mangarap ka” also live on Wish Bus. An OPM Legend too!
The company and Smokey Mountain are nice too!
Basil Valdez my favorite during the 80’s whether your falling in love or having a heartbreak (lol) you would love listening to him❤
