Opeth's main influences are Black Sabbath, Camel, Bathory and Morbid Angel

Only to name a few. Åkerfeldt really digs deep into different genres. He even said that Abba was an influence before lol. Heritage was influenced by Swedish folk music for example. Compare the song Heritage to a Jan Johansson song, like Visa från Utanmyra. There are influences from everywhere really.

Funny, when i hear their music none of those bands come to mind. I would say i hear a lot of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd, among others. Perhaps Camel, yes. Go figure...

@@Capitaomac1 Yeah, he has praised those bands a lot too. Judas Priest also. Faith in Others sounds similar to Dogs by Pink Floyd at times.

@@Capitaomac1 maybe the newest records are influenced by those bands, i won't argue that. But Bathory influence can be heard in the first two albums and Mikael's deep but intelligeble growl is reminescent of David Vincent

The snare sound term you're looking for is called a rim click or, more commonly, a cross-stick.

This album is from 1996, and here you can already see The style of the band where it was going, its particular style to compose songs and mix acoustic and metal guitars, these were the beginnings, and from there, they continued with their formula, for something they they're unique, Greeting from Chile🍺🍺🍺🍺🇨🇱✨✨🔥🔥

Opeths guitar skillzzzz rule ultraviolet metal sub zero lady. So classical and groovy yet southern and melodically dark. Like a peaceful soulful melody of emotional tragic poetry. Check out by the pain I see in others and the baying of the hounds by them. Proud of you and love your brutal passion and connection like mine.

I could be mistaken, but I'm fairly certain the "different snare sound" y'all are referring to is made by drumming a wooden castanet like thing on the drum kit. I don't know what they're properly called, but if you listen close there are a few times where it's struck twice more quickly and that makes me think he's hitting something wooden added to the kit for this song.

Mikael wanted from the start of the band to mix death metal with 70's prog rock since he like both. He has probably been influenced by a lot of obscure 70s and 60s prog, but I know Camel and King Crimson are inspiring his craft

Opeth are influenced by the early Death- and Black metal bands from the late 80s/early 90s (like Bathory, Death, Morbid Angel) aswell as many different Prog-Rock bands from the late 60's and 70s (King Crimson, Camel et etc)

Chill song but Mikael didn't have the clean vocal chops yet when this was recorded and the song feels more like Mikael going "I want to do a song that sounds like (insert 70'ies prog band-name here)" than creating something new. This was still very very early days of the band and Mikaels writing would only become better and better after this album. I remember hearing an interview with Mikael (who hates the productions and sound on this album) that after they had recorded Orchid they went into the studio for this album and were very pretentious about it (he brought a lute to the studio). This album is probably the least liked among their old stuff. It was also the first album of theirs I bought.
