Definitely a hard song to listen to out of context from the rest of the album for the first time. While it’s not a concept album The rest of the Morningrise adds much needed context to this song. Without that context I definitely see a first time listener being put off. Especially someone who not listened to a lot of Opeth. If you’re looking for clean vocals I’ll always stand behind any song on Damnation. Easy to jump into from a first time reaction standpoint. Great reaction though!

I've never heard this song before, haven't really dug into Opeth's work... I get a lot of Pink Floyd/David Gilmore vibes during the first half of this song (with little moments of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" here and there), then it transitions into an 80's era Metallica ballad feel. I like it!

I really love this album but its not easy listening, really long songs and sometimes not much going on for a while but then occationally there comes a couple of epic minutes that makes it so worth the wait. I would suggest starting with the albums; Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries and Damnation. A lot of fantastic songs there to discover. Have a great time.

Opeth is One of the most unique band in metal genre , im listening that band more than 23 years ... Especialy this song has a lot of meaning for me , in 2005 i lost my girl friend to a mental disorder , after shes gone i found out that she only left me a note , on that this songs name was written... Btw this is the root style of opeth , by the time they change a lot , more progressivity and technique added but that long words of riffs continued and song structures are did not change but it just needs patience to understand ... And opeth should be listened like put an album , play song one and leave it to the end ... Every album has its own feeling and journey ... dont jump on lyrics and if you are a musician try to play it ... Cuz everthing they made has it's own uniqueness , they educate me a lot as a bass player...

Well this is a song I didn't expect to hear today, it's been a long time. This was one of the many albums that opened my eyes up wide to different kinds of music in sixth form (16-18 in school for all the non-UK people). Morningrise has a special place in my musical spectrum though almost 20 years later, and I love the bass work and tone. Not afraid to take some lead lines. There's another version of Opeth that lived on with that bassist. Johan De Farfella. You gave it a chance though man and I like that. Look forward to hearing what you listen to next.

"You made me wait too long, Opeth" hahahaha, definitely can relate... for the longest time I couldn't care for Opeth, but I found out that, at least for me, the best way to listen to Opeth is to have it played in the background, letting the music progress and unravel instead of sitting there waiting for the changes, because Opeth songs tend to be long and have a lot of riffs/themes being repeated for quite a few bars over the common 4 bars/8 bars.

Yeah Opeth is the type of band that takes a few listens to a song and then it clicks. This song was very forgettable the first time I heard it, and I played it in the background a few times and boom I started to enjoy it and it was actually the song that made me want to really look into the band. 13 albums later, here I am.

It was off of the second Opeth album ever made, back in 1996, and they have definitely learned a lot since then, so I hope you continue your journey down their discography. Fk yea as yosupsc2 said, for sure Opeth - Deliverance for a growling song. Actually tbh Deliverance is one of those songs I dont care if you hate like literally despise gutteral vocals in any song ever, you will actually dig that song I let plenty of people when I was younger and had that album listen to that song and it happened to be I would always pick the people that I seen only listened to pop, rap, or just really any other genre other than any Genre/sub-genre of metal and id say putting a percentage of how many liked it once listened to it around 98.2, which in a vast array of many multiple types of people is a super super high rate.

Hey Man, the guy whoose comment you followed up here: I have listed those Songs in chronological order:"When" from 1998 up to "Ghost of Perdition" from 2005. This one here is from 1996, "Burden" from '08. This is the first Ballad that the Band ever wrote, from the second studio Album they recorded. They have developed a lot further as musicians since then, and based on your reactions so far, you might enjoy their 2000s Stuff a bit more. If you want to try another Song with the Growls i recommend "Bleak" or "Ghost of Perdition" (maybe live @Red Rocks, great concert) or even the super-heavy "Blackwater Park". For another one without growls, the rest of my list should be fine. I still added this Song because of its amazing atmosphere and it is the one i like most of their very first Albums. I get what you mean with the teasing part though.

One of the roots of progressive rock and metal was psychedelic rock. To really "get" psychedelic, you needed to be under the influence... Then it really made sense. That's what Opeth is doing - those long building parts are moments when you enjoy the shit. Also, not all music is meant to last four minutes... I thouroughly enjoy the wait. Perhaps a little patience training is in order? I mean, I also couldn't bear five minute songs back in the day, let alone ten or more minute ones, but you get used to it.

I don't know how well I knew Opeth when I heard this song, but I liked it. It's from their second album, but I'm familiar enough with the band to know their sound and what they're going for, even if it's not all there. I think people generally should react to certain songs first to get that same "understanding" of a band, and I don't think you're there yet. It's hard to explain, and I might sound like I'm just making excuses for a song you simply won't like as much. But I think if you were more familiar with the softer, more emotional and more unique aspects of Opeth's sound, you would hear it in this song too and like it more. I'm going with my instinct here, and I'm saying you should check out Bleak.

Probably not the first no growling song I would select to play for a new Opeth listener from their huge and epic discography!? Not really familiar with your likes and dislikes yet. But some of the non growling songs still with some music intricacy most my non Opeth friends seems to appriciate are (not in any particular order): Dignity or Next of kin (newest opeth sound) Faith in others Windopane Burden Moon above, sun below A fair judgment Not easy to pick just some since they have so many epic songs, only growls, growls/clean and only clean vocals. To me, they are one of the few bands/artists with a wast set of songs for each type of emotion I feel like exploring. And almost not any song that I do not listen to somewhat regularly. Beautiful/heavy/intricate/mellow with abundence of feeling Hope you like some of my suggestions if you give them another go for a reaction or just a listen for yourself We could probable write down at least 30 epic Opeth songs that I think you would appriciate, but lets start small ;) BR

Can understand you think it's a bit slow. The two first albums are i bit.... less consistently good? I still love them, and seeing what they became since.... They really never stopped growing in terms of songwriting, production, etc^^ For a growling song, I'd send you to "Dirge for November" As I feel that is a hidden gem. Dark, sad and brutal. For clean... I dunno, what kind of clean? Dark and somber? "Hope leaves". Bright and sparkly? "Will 'o the wisp", depressing and heavy? Fair jugdement. Epic journey? "River"... Christ I can go on and on. Honestly, I think you'd enjoy almost everything after their third album, and most of the third. But maybe not go for the two first for the time being, those are very... primitive? Still young and learning by doing. And here, have a random emoji 👃

Good song, but not a good first listen.

These guys are one of my favorite bands, but this is not a good reaction video song, lol. Why would someone reccommend this song for a reaction video? You should have chosen Face of Melinda off that list, or just about anything else. Please don't give up on Opeth because of this.
