Glad to see Ar Tonelico music getting some well deserved appreciation. I'm more of a fan of the songs from Ar Tonelico 1 like Chronicle Key, but all the games in this series are amazing. As for the nature of Ar Tonelico songs, "not human" is very accurate, Ar Tonelico songs are sung by Reyvateil, who are artificial beings created to use the settings "Song Magic" which works a lot like computer programs for the massive towers the games take place in. The songs have the odd names they do because they are execution to initiate/perform a function.

Man, props to whoever suggested one of the most eccentric Hymmnos (sic) pieces as your entry point for the Ar Tonelico franchise. That said, the sense of unease and urgency in the song is justified even on a Gameplay level because the Player is actually tasked to finish the Boss Fight it's played on before said song completes its runtime in order to not be locked out of AT3's best endings. For more context, the party learned they needed to revive the Final Main Heroine, the Tower Server's Administrator and Local Divine Figure, into a physical body so she can save the lives of two of the other Heroines and by extension their post-apocalyptic world; and the ordeal adds the fact they only have one shot after convincing the only singer with the permissions to execute the program because said program and the Boss-shaped defense routine it came coupled with eat way too many resources than what can be provided by a Centuries-old Tower-of-Babyl-shaped Magic Computer that's really close to break down permanently. On another note, I really hope you can have fun reacting to other melodies of the Ar Tonelico games. I'd love to see you comparing and contrasting both versions of AT1's EXEC_PAJA/PURGER, or reacting to the progression of the METAFALICA songs from AT2 (in the order of EXEC to METHOD to EXECwithMETHOD for better effect).

Yes!! Welcome into the rabbit role of the extremely specific genre of "japanese fantasy music composers that use vocalizing/made-up languages in an ethereal manner"! Other famous examples are Kajiura Yuki (one of my my all-time favorites) and KOKIA! I'm not super familiarized with Ar Tonelico in general, but Ive heard some tracks because of Akiko Shikata, one of the composers/singers for ArTon music, and whom is also an example of the very specific "genre" I mentioned above. Though, I'm not entirely sure she's the one singing in this one you just react to, but sounds a lot like her and her style - the chaotic chanting, the rhythmic, almost ritualistic vibes with clear inspiration from other cultures, the electronic components, a bajillion layers of sound and voices. The one song written/sung by Akiko from the ArTon I really really like is one called _"Infelious Rhaplanca. Heavenly Prayers ~Rhaplanca~Earthy Atonement -Maoh-"_ (jesus, the titles for ArTon songs, I swear haha); it has all the elements mentioned, it's awesome!

From what I recall, this piece was the background for a timed boss fight. You had to beat the boss before the music finished and whether you did or not determined which plot you continued on. One interesting thing is what's going on 1:30 - 1:50. I'm sure you noticed that they have different things happening in each ear. If you look at the lyrics, both are actually combined into one sentence, roughly alternating syllables. With this series being heavily influenced by computation, it seems that they were making a reference to multi-threading with that section. For someone with your background, I think you would be interested in Rebirthia=Protocol. IIRC Kokia also has formal training, you can really tell with her excellent control.

The songs in the games are basically like code for a computer for giant towers that execute said code. Also, a lot of the songs are sung in a made up languages. There are several languages with alphabet that can be translated. On another note, the mechanical aspect you mentioned is due to the character singing the song. It is sung that way out of efficiancy (in the context of the game of course) and to reduce "execution time" for the code. Not ornamental in any way, simply pragmatic. There is a whole lot more about the music in the games, but it gets confusing sometimes.

Imagine the world where there's a huge tower at the center that manage everything. Regulate weather, create land mass, release the monster or even fire laser beam to other planet by rely on girl ritual singing her "magic" which is literally a computer program. So the song would sound like A Japanese ritual + other worldly stuff + cybernetic/machine noise at the same time because it is actually singing 3 languages simutaneously. EDIT: Also "Ar no surge" The latest of series (late PS3 game) also got many good one too.

I'm super exited someone requested Ar Tonelico. I'm guessing we will see a few more in the following week as these things kinda spread like a chain reaction. One importing thing about the music is one of the main singers of the series, Akiko Shikata has songs in her albums where she sings in Hymmnos and are considered part of the game lore (she also has orgel version of some songs). Not to mention drama CD's having their own songs, extra songs made for anime OVA and album compilation, music circle Stellatram making fanwork songs mentioned in lore and Noriko Mitose singing *the original* version of Exec_Harmonious in some of her live concerts (Why is there no recording!!!), getting the full experience can be hard but its so fulfilling. I'm so glad that Ar Tonelico has made its way onto this channel. Its such an underrated series, and it has one of the most brilliant soundtracks to come out of a game in my opinion. Hope some more tracks from it get requested. I'd say the most interesting thing about the songs is that a lot of them are made to tell a story or convey certain emotions, sometimes even more than they're made to be musical. They also make use of a combination of Japanese and a constructed language called Hymmnos that's extremely in depth. If you're interested in checking out more, another really fascinating track I would recommend is "~Ar=Ciel Ar=Dor~" from Ar Tonelico 3.

Thrilled to see Ar tonelico stuff! This has already been said a lot in the comments, but it'd be great to see more reactions to these. I almost any single track would be cool tbh, but either listening through the entire sublimation set (the final boss music of AT2) or comparing the AT2 Metafalica/AT1 Harmonius tracks would be extremely rad, if *quite* lengthy. Edit: quick add, it might be worth adding the translations into any ar tonelico reacts because there's often a LOT happening lyrically in these songs, the syntaxes of the constructed language includes emotion as almost a prefix to any statement and sometimes the feelings directly contradict other things happening in the lyrics, etc. ....the people who said ar tonelico is a rabbit hole were 100% right, speaking as someone who knows a decent amount of people who have participated in creating entire fan-albums for this series 😂

I came for Genshin and I’m so happy to see Ar Tonelico here! You’re right, it’s not entirely human. This is a post-apocalyptic game where ppl live in towers, the hymnos are basically code which they use to communicate with the towers. Ar Tonelico 3 is by far the most mechanical of the 3 towers, since the Rayvetails are the ones in control. Rayvetails are basically girls that can communicate with the tower. Each tower has a different social stratus with how they regard the Rayvetails. My favorites are the songs from Ar Tonelico 2.

I hope we would see more of your reactions from this series! Personally recommending Ec Tisia, EXEC_FLIP_ARPHAGE/., and EXEC_REBIRTHIA=PROTOCOL/. To put more into context as to why it is toned like that, the character who sang this has only accessed a certain level of their consciousness which is also responsible for creating songs with stronger feelings (like if it is to be sung by someone who has a deeper access to their consciousness/"Cosmosphere", then the overall tone of this song would change as well). And the tonal setting of the Program (aka the song) is that of a festival of offering and rebirth. As for the actual function of the Song, we'll be going too technical by there ehehe.

The comments about being a 'war cry' are very accurate. Many of the songs in these games are combat programs. If you can imagine at the start of a fight a woman begins singing (complete with layered vocals and instrumentation which she can do because she's not human), and when she stops singing a lightning bolt comes out of the sky and strikes down her enemy. It's a strange setting, to say the least.

  • @moalboris239

Weirdly enough in the lore the reason she can the layered vocals and the likes is more because of the tower then how human she is. If my memory is right the tower basically reads what emotions she is having then translates into sound to make it easier on her. This is why they can sing song magic in combat while still singing the boss music. As long as she keeps her thoughts on her emotions she can sing parallel to the towers translations.

Namely: - em-pyei-n vari-fen jang - CIEL_N_PROTECTA - Class::XIO PROCEED - Class::EXPAJA Might make a Patreon request for some of these. And as some background, the language that these song's are sung in is called Hymmnos, it's a sort of song language. They can only be sung by artificial girls called Reyvateil's. As others have already explained what they are I won't go into that much detail. But interesting to note, Hymmnos has it's own alphabet and is an entirely made up language for the games. Hymmnos is a language also used to convey the emotions/feelings of the singer. That's why Reyvateil's, in the games story and history, have male partners who they are USUALLY a couple with, as they feel a stronger bond and connection with that person, and thus, creates stronger Song Magic. However, alot of later music in the Ar's series, most notably Nosurge, start to combine languages in the music such as Japanese, Russian and Hymmnos of course.

Anyway, the song in Ar Tonelico (No Surge games excluded) are compromised of their original language that is actually functional language so you can actually translate it. This language is called as Hymmnos. In Ar Tonelico 3 there is an inclusion of Ar Ciela but that one is closer to Nier's Chaos language in the way you can't translate it manually and need to trust the composer for it (it is translated). I see people also recommended some song that come from No Surge series, which have different language system than Tonelico series actually so it'll surprise you. Songs from No Surge series are divided into literal program song and one that is more culturalized. They're using rule that is different to Tonelico too XD. Well the two series song have the similarity of song used by the singer to use magic. It really is interesting how one can go so far to create a whole world from Song.

Great to see Ar Tonelico getting some love. (Too bad I don't remember enough about the plot...) In the setting, special enhanced humans use "Song Magic", in combination with the Tower of Ar Tonelico, which is essentially a massive supercomputer that makes magic happen. (Which is why song titles have things like "exec", underscore, forwardslash, etc, as well as the electronic vibe) Using Song Magic involves singing ones feelings and intentions. And most of it is sung in an artificial language. In particular, this is a song of sacrifice, and resurrection of another. The repetitive part where the chorus is saying "VAN" something "VAN", is them listing out what they're sacrificing, "Even misfortune, even hope, even desire, even mercy".

Ar Tonelico 3 was the game that I first played since I only had a PS3 and never had the PS2 to play the first two games. The first impression outside of the outstanding music of this series was the comedy and the Japanese humor of the series especially with the guy mistook one of the characters for being a Man when he soon realized that this Muscle Bound person in a dress was in fact a Cute Girl in her real form.

In the back you can hear the instrument that makes it sound indian, I dont know what it is, but I imagine its a drum. But yeah very interesting piece. Edit 1: Listening to it again it is pretty hard to hear. Dont know if I'm hearing things lmao. Edit 2: Ok no I can sure hear it in part 2

I will comment any more I remember under this one! and maybe the mini songs like Flower Pattern Actual and the dream pattern songs.

The simpelest way to describe whats going on here: Imagen being a spellcaster and casting a spell to revive a very ancient magical being close to a god in power. If you succeed, congrats you have a chance to save the planet. If you fail, well, basically every spellcaster in the land looses the ability to use magic any many just outright die. So theres alot riding on this song.

CAN WE HAVE MORE FROM THIS GAME SERIES BECAUSE I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH. I wish you listen to METHOD_REPLEKIA/. and all the Akiko Shikata's work on this game because of her somewhat classical background. Or better yet, the whole suite of Metafalica consists of 3 songs: EXEC_METAFALICA/. METHOD_METAFALICA/. and its final duet culmination EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA/. For this song, EXEC_METEMPSYCHOSIS/. is purposefully made to feel cyborg-y. This game's OST is somewhat digital-y cybernetic in nature, but this song is especially so. The in-game explanation was the the person singing this song is deficit in expressing her emotion and value efficiency over all else. I see this reflected in a way that the singing sounds cybernetic and almost sprechstimme, layered upon each into cacophonous and the song deny us to latch on to specific melody which is what I interpret as the element that "express emotion" the very thing that the character singing is bad at. One of the aspect that make this song one of may favorite from this game is that it mixed some tribal element of chanting into this layered of cybernetic-esque choir. It definitely make it sounds like, you know, if the AI can express something through some sort of programming language, it would probably sound like this. I hope you can experience more of this game soundtracks. It took you to some weird places and vibes that you can't wrap your head around easily and it's really awesome.

Not everyday you see someone giving Ar tonelico music a try, and boy this is probably the strangest intro to it, but glad to see you put your thoughts on it. Should it ever peak your interest there's a song in the same line of games titled "Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE;" that you might be enjoy giving a listen to. I can't really go into detail on what the song is in context, but the best description I can give is "an innocent light being violently taken over by darkness"

The part which you said is intoned speaking is basically what the singer feeling/thinking. How songs in Ar Tonelico works are that they are 'command words' for a tower, and the intoned speaking is the singer's individuality. In this song, the singer is basically pleading for her best friend to not disappear ('kienai de' is Japanese for 'don't disappear') while she is controlling the tower to weaken the security so the protagonist and his team can release the one who can rescue their friends.

Man, this series are a wild ride music-wise. As you and some of the other comments said, this series takes place on Reyvateil, literally another world with another culture rounded up on the Song Magic; a will of the singer that (correct me if I'm wrong), if it is totally aware and sure of what they plead for, its prayer will be manifested into reality. These songs have their own language, which are also based in codifications to "execute" a program, but they also let run their feelings throughout each lyric, which also gives them their own belief, their own ethnicity, and thus, their own folk.

Ah, yes! ArTonellico Qoga, have been 10 years since I played this one, the music always reminds me of some kind of mix from code geass and tsubasa chronicles songs, the cool whit this series is that you need to adjust your timing in attacks so you can match the rythm whit your singer(Reyvateil) so your synchro attacks can be stronger, it was the first RPG series I found this kind of combat, til last year whit Neptunia Virtual Stars that implemented a similar method for the boss fights and there you can also change the songs betwen the battle to adjust to the kind of attacks you want to perform and get a different bonus and power ups

Ar Tonelico and Ar no Surge are some of my favorite games due to the music alone, if you read the lyrics you would understand there's several different meanings to them, one to tell a story, others to express emotions and the most important is unironically script commands to execute programs.

As far as I know a lot of the music in the series is composed by the singers themselves, many of whom are pretty classically trained. As mentioned in other comments already it's a mix of Japanese and a language they made up for the games. In-game the hymns are entirely(?) diegetic, acting essentially as executable files that are "sung by" (or more often "executed by") characters for practical purposes. Even just beyond the musical element they do some fascinating things with their songs, using them to carry out a conversation or to portray inner conflicts, etc. M My favorite example of the latter is EXSPHERE_NOSURGE from Ar nosurge, which coincidentally has a good translation here on KZread that shows off how the language works. The song is designed to kill anyone who hears it and is being "executed" through someone who doesn't want to sing it, so both the music and the lyrics reflect how the singer is trying to fight against the song.

I stumbled in here and just wanted to say I very much enjoyed your confused expressions. For some added context your close on the inhuman voice trying to become human. The lyrics are going on about chains, downloading, rebirth, and pleas to not disappear. In Ar Tonelico the third tower's god is "missing" cuz she executed a program to become the Tower. This song is to create a new body for her, the last hope of a dead planet.
