Opening the A4 DCC Sound 'Sparrowhawk' by Hornby
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
What a locomotive! There's not much to say, other than that she might just quite possibly be the best A4 locomotive in OO gauge out there! Enjoy

I bought an A4 Paciric Golden Fleece 42 years ago second hand Its the Talisman for which I have four original Talisman coaches Its still running great and after all these years its still my favourite design loco !
Back in 2008 I had a big garage where I had set up a model railway. You could control all the points, lights, and engines from a square cut out in the middle. I moved and I had nowhere to set one up:\ But in June im moving back and i'll be starting a new model railway:D And this engine will be #1 on my list:D Thanks for inspiring me to get this model:) Keep up the reviews.
The "I dont know what she's doing" sound is the safety valve lifting :)
they look so magical beside each other
My Sparrow Hawk arrived the other day and oh what joy, she is a beautiful looking loco and to top things off, she has sound but I hadn't realised it has a LocSound V4 decoder in it until I read the instructions - bonus!!
the safety valve that goes off when you leave her idling is very realistic!great model you have there mate!
WOW THE VERY LAST BIT WAS AWSOME
I absolutely love the BR blue livery! It just looks so lovely and sleek, great review!
Also for a Hornby this train is especially amazing. Their packaging and their train designs are so much better now. About time they listened to their fans. :)
I just can't get enough of that sloped front on those trains, I started watching your videos simply because they were relaxing and I loved your enthusiasm, but the trains like this one, the royal ones etc. are just... stunning. Truly the most beautiful trains or any vehicle I've ever seen. It's led to me buying some trains of my own and learning a lot about the engineering and history behind these things. It's mind blowing! Keep up the lovely vids Will (I'm a Will too). You're great. :)
OK Will, some info. The paint colour is garter blue, as used by BR at the time. The sound when she is 'idling' or 'simmering' is the over pressure being released from the safety valves. Thanks for yet another great review!
LOL, love it how you refer to the train as her and she and keep talking to her !
A great review Will and so glad you are back in helping us to decide what locos to buy next ~~:))
I love the A4s. They are unique and so beautiful. From the Bugatti nose to the back of the tender, they are amazing.
at 9:15 you can see the paragraph under Will's finger says "on passing to the newly formed British railways the Sparrow Hawk was re-numbered as 60018 and painted in experimental BR blue as depicted on the model"
What an engine! I do love the A4s, and got to see all the survivors together in July, and i met Will there too!
Amazing review as always! One of the smartest A4 liveries in my opinion! Certainly has the sound to match it's beauty! LOL! Love the clip of her thunder by at the end! Great work!
I have had one for about a year, wonderful engine.
Would love to see more of her pulling some coaches :)

Ravzir I saw the original "Sparrowhawk" hauling a train of loose coupled coal wagons in the early '60s between Church Fenton and York. If it still existed today there is no way it would be asked to do that. I wonder, would more A4s have been saved if more people had been aware that they were styled by Bugatti ?
Thank you
lovely loco
The A4s that were named after birds were used for general use. That is why Sparrow Hawk does not have a corridor tender.
The mysteries sound is her letting off steam because if the pressure is to high they always let off steam so Hornby, with the sound chip, is mimicking it. At least, I think so
Very lovely loco. The whistle is what grabs me.
Another great Review InterCity82. I cannot wait for the next one.
An outstanding review well done.
That sound after the coal shoveling was the safety valves.

Awesome stuff
WOW!! I was so impressed by your review Will that I searched hi and low for a Sparrow Hawk and managed to track (excuse the pun!) one down and it's being delivered tomorrow - can't wait!! Keep up the great work by the way.
Another great review and my favourite A4 is the mallard
Stunning model.....
amazing
I went up to to York on the 29th June and 3 were in the great hall, Union Of South Africa was having her smoke box cleaned, Bittern arrived in style at York (watch my latest video for that) and Mallard was under rappes and stickers were on the paint shop windows. Still can't wait for the unveiling.
Great model. Gotta have me one of these A4's with sound.
Regards double heading, I saw B1s double head A4s between Leeds and York many times, even travelling on said trains.
She's blowing off steam
Very nice Will
Absolutely amazing model! Great Review! :)
IC82 is the most epic reviewer of trains out there! Keep up the great work man, can't wait to meet you on the 13th
I believe the colour is called Express Passenger Blue, the unveiling of Tornado in her new colour (which was this colour) most people said it was Express Blue. Great review as always, i did miss my weekly dosage of IC82
I love your videos
OK, Im sold! Would look great going round the garden.
oh my god i've never seen a class A4 go so fast like that ps love thw whistle
Very interesting `production`, the presentation is first class....well done.
Asthetically this is my favourite A4 model.
Great review I think Sparrowhawk is beautiful nice one Will
Lets not forget the Allegations about the GREAT AMERICAN PRR S1 Lowey. NOW Thats a gorgeous locomotive, good luck getting a hold of one of those IC.
Magnificent!
The tender had corridor connections in late BR days, this livery tells you it is early BR days, therefore, it was after the war. That means the corridor connections hadn't been added yet. As LNER never built them with corridor connection, that was BR who added them around the 1950's, when the early crest was taken away and replaced with the late BR crest and was late BR days.
Nice A4 that!
another great review Will keep it up :)
As always IC82 a fantastic review.I can't wait for the great gathering.I also recently bought the double tender Bitter, its look amazing.
Great to see how she looks! A wonderful livery - the only one I have yet to add to my collection! I have Sparrow Hawk in BR Green, Kingfisher in LNER Blue, and Silver Link in LNER Two-Tone Grey.
That sound is the safety valve kicking off
Smart loco !! According to Wikipedia it was withdrawn on 19th June 1963.
Loved the video. A bit long-winded but I like your style, especially the plaque on the skirting board, LOL. And I agree, it's a lovely model and the sounds were ace. Gotta get into this DCC stuff myself. Cheers.
The dovetail connector is a menace, drops off all the time

I found that with my LMS 6239 (also Hornby) so I've used a small piece of Blu-Tack to keep it it place.

The actual pocket snapped off my flying Scotsman. Don’t go fast into coaches or wagons when you have the nem pocket with slim Line coupler
nice
Love the loco and really want to get a A4 ! keep it up! -Jacob MRC
In reply to Mallard's record, when you consider that she weighs 100 plus tons minus tender and it was 1938 it's EXTROADINARY!
Hornby says it was withdrawn on the the 27 November 1937, this is actually the date it entered service and was withdrawn on the the 19 June 1963
Regarding the info on the real Sparrowhawk on the box, I think it more likely it was withdrawn November 63 as stated, but cut up in June 64 as opposed to 63, plenty of loco's spent some months stored between withdrawl and scrapping.
nice loco
having just looked up sparrow hawk's lifespan, here's what the conclusion is: entered service 27 November 1937 and then withdrawn 19 June 1963. thought i should share that bit of information. again Will, i do agree that Hornby did make a slight error with that information and as we know, some information can be misleading. brilliant review all around though
I think that particular blue livery is BR Express Passenger blue, like Sir Nigel Gresley wears. Garter blue is the lighter blue that Mallard and Bittern are currently in.
Awsome
Great video! I have this loco myself (albeit a DC modification by Olivias Trains since my setup isn't DCC) and it's probably my absolute favourite. The livery is BR Express Blue, by the way.
Sparrow hawk was actually withdrawn 19th june 1963 and cut up in 10th july 1963. Hornby got the info wrong. if the info had said "Sparrow Hawk enter service on 27th november 1937 and succumbed to the cutters torch on 10th july 1963" then it would be right.
I like your sign!
That sound really sick. For your next video can you do a review on the spectrum plasa tampa
The sound at 25:15 is just the safety valves letting off, quiet compared to a real one, and sounds nicer than a P classes safety valves.
Brilliant. If I had so choose a top link loco it would be a DCC sound a4 in lner
The Garter Blue shade is usually linked to the LNER A4 loco's and this shade of blue as BR Blue (White Lined) the same as the Hornby Merchant Navy "Canadian Pacific". Then you have the BR Green shade and Wartime or Mixed Traffic Black coloured A4's. The other four A4 loco's by LNER are the Sliver and Grey locomotives, Silver Link, Silver King, Sliver Fox and Quick Silver. I hope you find this helpful to you. PS: the sliding slots on the cab roof are ventilation openings for the driver and the fireman.
just started my locomotive hobby. I'm not familiar with hornby but this looks amazing. sadly I don't seen Hornby products at our local hobby shop. ended up buying a kato starter set instead. imho the steam era really championed by the british, diesel by the american and electric by the japanese
The Express Blue has got to be my favourite livery on the A4

Robert Sowden I like the br green
hey will, I looked it up and it really doesn't matter what way you say radious. but then again you can't trust everything you see or read on the internet. and the smoke stack you are thinking of for the mallard is called a double kill-chap blast pipe. still love your vids will. please keep posting!! :)
YES FINALLY AN A4
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video love the A4s and especially the single chimney ones, I have mallard in br green premium, and silver fox in silver jubilee premium, great video mate
To answer your question about the tender, not all A4s were fitted with corridor tenders. Some were, but others were not. As far as a comprehensive list of which A4s recieved corridor tenders or not, I can't say. For example, I believe number 60006 "Sir Ralph Wegwood" didn't receive a corridor tender either. Perhaps there were other examples at the great gathering at York?
that sound was of water being ejected from the cylinders (when a steam loco sits for long time water builds up in the cylinders and needs to be ejected every now and then while the loco is stationary and before the loco starts moving.
it is nice
Epic
went to york's NRM it is fantastic :) i loved it
This Locomotive was withdrawn 19-6-63. Disposal was in Doncaster Works (BR) 10-7-62. (d) = (a) and (c). (e) = (a) and (b). The Class was a development of the famous Class A3 which were first constructed in 1922. The Bugatti nose was developed from wind tunnel testing by the French car manufacturer and all internal steam passages were smoothed to allow a better flow of steam. Number Series 60001-60034 and 4469. Built at London & North Eastern Railway Doncaster Works. No Lot Nos. yet available. 60022 Mallard set up the still unbeaten world speed record for steam locomotives at 126mph while descending Stoke Bank on the LNER main line on the 3rd July 1938. Some locomotives had crests on their boiler casings, plates on their cab sides appropriate to their names or other fittings. These included: 60010 (4489) Dominion of Canada had Presentation Bell positioned in front of the Chimney and cab side plates. 60011 (4490) Empire of India had cab side plates displaying a crown and the Indian Sun. 60017 (2512) Silver Fox carried a Stainless Steel 'Silver Fox' on both sides of the boiler casing. 60022 (4468) Mallard carries plaques on both sides of the boiler casing donoting the World Speed Record for Steam Traction. 60024 (4483) Kingfisher carried plaques on both sides of the boiler casing. 60027 (4486) Merlin carried plaques on both sides of the boiler casing. During 1941 and 1942 the skirting, both in front and behind the outside cylinders, was removed from the whole class to faciliate easier maintenance. Towards the end of 1963 all the locos remaining on the Eastern Region were transferred to Scotland, together with four from Gateshead shed. These remaining engines ended their days in grand style working the 3 hour Glasgow to Aberdeen expresses. The first loco withdrawn was by the LNER when 4469 Sir Ralph Wedgwood was condemmed after suffering extensive bomb damage at York shed on 29 April 1942 during World War II. The tender, however, was repairable and was given to Class A2 60507 Highland Chieftain. The first five locos to be withdrawn by BR were 60003, 60014, 60028, 60030 and 60033 in December 1962 from Kings Cross shed. The last loco withdrawn was 60019 on 5th September 1966 from Aberdeen Ferryhill shed. Six Class A4 locos are Preserved: 60022 Mallard. I think it had only 3 coaches during the record run, and leged says the BR class 05 (or 06 not sure) do reached a higher speed during a test-run, but it couldn't repeat it on a second run, so it wasn't official. "Covered" locos like this was the mechanics nightmare, we even got an accident with our high speed steamer (MÁV class 242) when a engineer was doing some maintenance under the "skirt" , and the driver didn't knew or saw he was there, and he started the engine. The mechanic lost an arm.
That noise is the blowout from the safety valves to make sure she doesn't explode.
hi will wow what can i say what another awesome video from you and what a great loco to do a video on i love the a4s and with sound just brings it so much to life this looks a great loco an i agree withyou will you cant beat the a4s from hornby they are at the top of their game with this model 10/10 as always will great video keep them coming peter from essex
You can select all of the different sounds on chip by keying on 10 - I think from watching your other videos you have a Hornby select system so it is possible.
What control system do you use ? Can you control two engines separately on one line ? Dam this video has made fall in love with Hornby agian :D
Have you shown any shots of your layout ? That would be interesting
The standing sound is either the blower that keeps the fire hot or it's steam leaving the cylinders..
it is epic
I like that model
I love A4
Hey,Intercity82,can you see if you can find a bachmann GWR 14xx?I havent seen any reviews on one and you're really great at reviewing loco's.Thanks!
I like it
