Opening Credits: Final Conflict

This is the opening sequence for the third film in the Omen series. Between the brilliant cinematography and Jerry Goldsmith's score this part of the film accomplishes more storytelling (and more effective storytelling) than most other films -and all without uttering a single word.
Unfortunately, the rest of the movie is terrible.
[For some reason I couldn't get this video to appear in widescreen: it's all scrunched up, but I hope people can see this and maybe give the film a chance. Four minutes of good filmmaking out of a two-hour movie might seem pitiful, but it's four minutes more than most other films.]

sam neill carries the movie , any scenes without him are boring he's a terrific actor. it's a shame the writers couldn't come up with a better story for the trilogy ' s finale.

Yes, Lee and you're right. This film began great. Now if I'm wrong, There was to be a four film cycle. Jonathan Scott-Taylor would have to reprise as Damien still in his teens or early twenties. then This one with Sam Neill, who does a magnificent performance as the older evil Damien, whose mission is to rule the world and prevent the Second Coming of Christ. (He knows he will be destroyed). Richard Donner should have returned as director but he was having issues with the release of Superman II and all that drama.

@@travismclaurin9419 , LOL a long time ago I wrote a fan fiction story of Damien in his 20s (Damien: Omen 3). This time he was living with his aunt, the sister of Robert and Richard Thorn. The animal hanging around him this time was a black cat. Needless to say it was pretty bad, with the black cat attacking Joan Hart's sister.

The guy at 1:27 was also at Damien’s birthday party in the original ‘Omen’. He is wearing some kind of military uniform. Clearly playing a different character. He was also in the Oval Office scene in ‘Superman II.’

The look of the film was impressive. You'd expect the films to look cheaper with each sequel and this and the scale of the music was a surprise back in 1981. Roger Ebert praised the storytelling during the credits. The problem was that the script didn't know how to end the series.

I agree. I don't think he became as powerful as he was supposed to be or as loved. I didn't like the odd rape scene or weird relationship he had. I thought that they should have kept to the whole need to use all 7 daggers. The ending needed to be better and I am not suer how it could have been done.

Not bad as a standalone film but nowhere near as good as the first one. David Seltzer should have done himself justice and gotten involved in the rest of the series.

Lionel Newman's orchestration and conducting of Goldsmith's composition was magical. Newman was a legend himself in film scores. Listen to his St. Bernadette score as an example and you can hear the similar style of orchestration.

I love that others' opinion of this movie is similar to mine, its not as good as the first 2, they clearly rushed the story and production values but at least they got a proper actor in Sam Neill to sell the dialogue. Imagine how much worse it would have been if they just got an 'up and comming' unknown to play Damien in this.

Kinda hard to predict or write how this movie should have gone or ended but the writing about control trolling the youth minds and religious radicals equals the current time we're in. I love how only the people of faith and the apostles of Satan are the only ones who know what's going on. The intro is the epitome of prophecy must happen regardless of how it ends. This movie is good until the showdown between Damien and Christ.

  • @davidterry4952

Excellent opening scene. We know upon seeing the daggers, Damien is good as dead. However, having waited for three movies for Damien to get killed, let alone injured, the writer couldn’t do any better than have an agnostic at best stab him in the back??? According to the first movie, you had to have some sort of religious affiliation. And you had to use all the daggers. Makes no sense how the evil forces that be allowed her to get as close as she did considering the fate that befell those before her. Big disappointment. I’d have rather seen the Majesty himself jump from the window and kick Damien’s ass.

There are good things in this film, but they don't amount to much unfortunately (besides the music). It just feels routine too often. I take your points about the daggers and Damien's defeat is almost "Can anyone think of how to wrap this all up in 2 minutes of screen time?". And the ending is confusing, with the chief monk not in fact being strangled to death by Damien after all, but it's also not clear that it is him in the final shot.
