The surrealness to me came from the references, the Half Life map & i can't remember any map like it, but the map with the subs in it, it's music gave me flashbacks to Goldeneye 64, but that was so long ago i can't tell if my minds playing tricks on me.

always when im watching open fortress i feel like living in alternate universe

The Civilian announcer is so much better than not just the other 7 options, but almost any other announcer I can think of in any game ever, that it's like, insane. I love him, he's perfect. Open Fortress on its own is an insanely good time, but a huge part of my enjoyment of the game just comes from wreaking havoc and getting to hear Benjamin Rudman comment on your carnage with glee and shock in his best "upper-class twit" voice: THAT'S IT WIPE THE WALLS WITH THEM! KILLING SPREE! MY GOD, HE'S KILLING EVERYONE! TRIPLE KILL! IS THE LITTLE BABY GOING TO CRY? MWAH! MONEY WELL SPENT! WELL, *THAT* WAS PRETTY SAD. GET THAT LAST BASTARD BEFORE HE GETS AWAY! Civilian's personality just fits so well as an announcer

Man the big band music slowly building in the background and then SWINGING IN with intensity during your killing sprees is such a vibe it just needs to be a feature in TF2. I want swingy Jazz orchestras to roar alongside my pro killstreak

I've never played a "proper" arena shooter before, and even though I sucked shit I still had fun.

This should be noticed by ESports community. Not only you don't need money to buy weapons. You just need cosmetics and all of that kind of stuff.

Holy shoot its so good, I feel like this is on the precipice of huge popularity which is both really good but also intimidating for a smaller project. Additionally both sad at how much more "playable" this is compared to a lot of triple A releases lately, but also makes me happy with how genuine the general community has been around these games despite more recent issue's.

It's a really refreshing take on a fast-paced multiplayer shooter in that timeless TF2 style, I'd love to see what different content they could add if they got the proper support for it

I'd gladly play it, if it was selectable in Casual. Arena has three of my favorite maps in the entire game: Watchtower, Offblast and Lumberyard. I think it's a crying shame those three maps haven't been reworked into some other gamemode because they've been left to rot. EDIT: forgot about Ravine, that's another great map.

I bet this is canon in some part of tf2 world.

I wish open fortress was made somewhat official its genuinly an amazing mod that makes tf2 into more of an arena shooter. I love it but its just not as popular as it should be.

I imagine that the Mann brothers just put a bunch of people in a ring, make them all fight to the death, and the best ones gets hired. And that's how we got the different classes

The Mercenary: can pick up and use any weapon, 200 health. Moderate speed, great bunnyhopping. I'd say to make it balanced they can only use 2 weapons, a primary and melee, but they get instead the ability to pick up anything and get the slot system here, at a cap for one weapon a slot. Weapons will have their advantages and disadvantages, such as the minigun being extremely powerful but makes you slower than heavy, or the pistol making you _SUPA FAST_ but your damage sucks ass. As for movement he could do anything another class could do, like rocket and sticky jumping; but I would like to note some weapons should be off the table, being the wrench/PDA (unless the PDA was primary and the wrench had blood be equipped to upgrade buildings, along with metal) spy's knife, (mercenary is so fast and with more health) and probably the nade launcher and the sticky launcher in separate slots. (They are close enough to both be primaries, so it kinda works.) What other balancing Ideas can you think of?

​@@MsMacintosh Actually I was thinking of just your standard first person shooting inventory. An assault rifle, a pistol, hand grenade, and a combat knife. Almost like Counter Strike but in Team Fortress weapon layout. I would call this new class the Trooper Assault Rifle slot would consist of assault rifles that do automatic fire, semi-auto, or three round burst. There's the pistol with other unique variants compared to the other classes like the scout. This could include giving him a magnum with high recoil, high damage, and a little slower firing speed. The hand grenade can be your standard frag grenade which can be scavenged by dead soldiers. Other throwables include a sticky hand grenade that sticks on enemies and deal more damage if it does stick. Then of course there's smoke screen to blur vision or maybe a flash bang to stun enemies. Those other grenade variants cannot be scavenged by dead soldiers. The combat knife has medium attack speed. So it hits slower than scout and spy, but it does deal more damage. Some variations of these knives can include dealing bleed damage upon crits, but those bleed damages are crits. However it has half the random crit chance and has a slow attack speed between each attack that lands a strike. So yeah, a Trooper mercenary that's based on your standard first person shooters.

@@ViceN53X well, yes, that can work. What about unlocks then? Movement abilities? How do we balance the assault rifle to not be blatantly broken and too easy like _every other modern shooter?_ Start with the assault rifle, maybe an AK of sorts. It could act similar to CsGo, where it has a lot of bloom, so repetitive shots are inaccurate, but using it like a marksman rifle would be viable. Take, say, a 30 round mag, 1 degree inaccuracy at base, up to 45 degree (radially) when moving and spamming. It should likely fire slower than the SMG, maybe about as fast as the sentry, 6-8 bullets a second. As for damage, it would likely have around the same as the SMG but with less ramp up or falloff, around 20 damage a shot with 30 max ramp up and 5 max falloff. The pistol would most likely act the same as scout's, with the same unlocks perhaps. As for grenades, this could be the movement ability, in which the grenade has a set time, and then explodes for about 100 max damage, 5 for the edge of the blast radius.. The blast force would be equivalent to demo's grenades, pretty much the same interactive object but with a different model. Heck, make it simple and copy soldier's but alter the colors. The combat knife should act like spy's knife, 40 damage and swinging moderately fast. However, no backstabbing, but a small moment boost when deployed, around 10%. So what about unlocks? First, one for primary: an AR style rifle, with a 3 round burst instead of automatic fire. The burst would fire faster, maybe about 35%, but the time between bursts makes it act more like a mid range damage dealer instead of having the option to spam at point blank. For this, I would suggest less mag size, from 30 to 24, and tighter spread. An alternative to the pistol, a revolver with tight spread and high damage at cost of firing speed and clip size. Essentially the same as spy. An alternative to the frag grenade, a concussion grenade that has less damage but far more knockback force, great for getting into places you shouldn't be. It could also be contact based instead of on a timer, to make it easier to use for mobility but be heavily lacking in damage, maybe down to 40 from 100. Then, a knife alternative. How about a heavier melee that acts like demo's swords: more range, slower deployment and holstering. I would also add a swing speed penalty, but give it slightly more damage. Of course, this all assumes random crits are non-existent.

@@ViceN53X to add to your ideas, the assault rifles slot should have two directions for primaries, either the more accurate but slow marksman, such as a grand or burst m16a1, or the close range "fuck off" weapons that your use to hold a small area, like an uzi. As for the pistols, a magnum such as the Deagle would certainly be appreciated, maybe a variant of high damage but low fire rate like a revolver. As for grenades: smoke grenades may fit in other games, but I am not sure crowd control tools would be fun to play against; however, a sticky grenade that can stick to players but have less damage, being easier to aim, would make sense: along with the concussion grenade ideas I mentioned earlier. The knife you mentioned seems to fit well in the edits weight class of melee, such as pro's axe or heavy fists. 65 damage and medium swing speed. A knife with bleed is certainly a good idea, and also some way to have a melee based style for this class would also be nearly necessary. Maybe instead of a rifle primary, a heavy tactical vest that reduces damage and gives health: 50 more health, say on a 200 base, and 10% damage resistance in exchange for your source of mid range power damage. Another could be a light vest, with only 25 more health, but a movement boost due to lack of ammo or heavy armor to carry. As for other out of the box alternatives, how about replacing the grenade with a healing source? Similar to heavy sandwich, but more skill based: On kill, you receive a healing flask, that give you 75 health in 15 point bursts over five ticks. Maximum charge amount should probably be 2. As for a pistol replacement, how about a sawed off double barrel? One shot, wide spread, but Maximum ramp up could knock someone off you and into your medium range suited for your rifle. Bingo bango, you have a combo of shotgun to full auto. This idea is certainly fun to play with, what are some other ideas you have? Maybe an automatic shotgun, or an LMG? How about an axe or sword? What about cosmetics? So many ideas!

@@MsMacintosh I also like to add medieval theme'd arsenal into the kits. So like his primary would be this sort of three bolt crossbow acting as a shotgun. Then perhaps a shield worn similarly to Demoman's Charg'n Targe but for more defensive means like being able to deflect bullets completely. Then there's these medieval flasks that were used as explosives during those ages (Or maybe the Holy Hand grenade if you want to reference Monty Oum) And finally I'm thinking maybe a spear. Swords are overused weapons so maybe the trooper could use a spear instead. Cosmetic wise I'd say make the medieval spearman clothing. The coats, the helmet, pants, chainmail... something that would make them look like the prominent type of soldier at the time.
