I'm going to say I enjoy the weather here in Thailand. 🙂 I moved here in 2011 so I've been enjoying it for a while. During my career in the US, I would move anywhere that offered me a pay raise, which means I finished out my working life in NE Montana (10 years in NE Montana). Every year I could expect to see -40C in the winter, and +40C in the summer. I enjoy that Thailand does not have those temperature swings. I enjoy that all my Raynaud symptoms have vanished here in Thailand. I get a kick out of looking for a hoodie when the temperature dips down to 20C. Simple pleasures. My retirement here is all about simple pleasures, and Thailand is full of them. 🙂

A lot of guys come out here and think they are going to live the dream on a limited budget Thailands not cheap anymore especially Medical care if you need it and to live well here you need an income of between 80,000 to 100,000 a month for that you can live really really well here, many guys come here realise they have made a mistake and then get resentful towards the Thais and the country,Ive lived here very very happily for 30 years I know longer mix with expats they are far to toxic.

Color me strange but I enjoy both sides of Thailand. I'm perfectly happy sitting in my house in Chonburi reading a book, walking across the street to the market, the 7-11 etc... But I also enjoy the excursions to the malls in the area with the over the top Bangkok malls a special treat.

01:56 Thank God I can just walk from my place directly into Benjakitti park. The city centre has became extremely busy (it was honestly amazing during Covid. So quiet and peaceful). Bangkok is changing too quickly compared to when I first got here in 2001. Or maybe I'm just getting older and easily tired of all the extroverts being everywhere. You made a smart choice of moving to a more quiet place in Thailand.

look, there's 2 kinds of people in this world-those who are prepared to extrapolate from inadequate data sets and....... seriously though, he made an important distinction between people who are pulled towards Thailand & others who are pushed away from where they used to live. It made me think about myself. I'm in the latter category so maybe I won't last the course here.

@@ferney2936I'm perplexed, I'm in both camps. Moved because I love Thailand and it's people and also moved because I'm trying to get away from something, but I don't put down my home country. I also love little country markets in issan etc or being on the beach and also love massive Bangkok Malls and crowds. Live there because it's cheap but is that wrong, doesn't mean I should be better off in Philippines or Costa Rica? I'm not American by the way 😉

Hey Steve, I have a conundrum. My wife of ~40 years is Thai and wants us to retire in Thailand. Though it would be significantly cheaper, I have grave reservations about this due to the weather, the boredom and probably a few other things. To me Thailand is a great place to visit for a few weeks but anything more drives me crazy. Yes people say "take up a hobby to keep yourself busy", yeah but what fishing, golf etc? I guess I'm the type who loves my western lifestyle and that would be difficult to create in Thailand.

Probably 5 kinds in reality. Looks like your mate Tim is standing by for the Next M.V. Phoenix. I came back to AU for Xmas to visit my 94 year old mother for Xmas cause I may never see her again. Whilst here, was an ideal opportunity to give up 3 to 4 packs L&M Si Dang Lek nung waan. I lasted 3 whole days 1st time as AUD$59 pesos per pack is good encouragement, then I broke down & bought a 30 gram pack of White Ox @ 70 AU pesos , gone in 4 days. Now with a little help from the Nicorrette QuickMist 1mg spray, which are now illegal in Thailand, lasted all day without a smoke. Now, after 50 years of smoking & 100s of attempts, I may at least last another week without a smoke. Thanks for the great vid Steve.

But.... as soon as i have to pay serious taxes here I'd be out in an instant. Just as you said, the weather, traffic, dogs, corruption are only manageable when you are sort of an outsider on the inside. My honest 2 cents :-) Great monologue as always, keep it going and just for fun : go visit Icon Siam mall, seriously nothing in the US or EU compares.

Malls may be dead in America but they are happen’n places in Thailand. I am expat #1. The curious comment I see all to often is, “Why would anyone with money move to Thailand?” I actually do love the weather. No more damp chilly weather for these old bones. Love the food. Love visiting Thai temples. Love my wife. Love the freedom. I even sorta love the driving. Been here 7 years.

I think many vloggers (not you Steve) are running out of ideas. They can only make so many vids about hookers eating their foreign prey, living on $1000 a month, expat insurance and night markets. I definitely count myself as one who wants to live in Thailand. Financially I could live comfortably anywhere in the world, but I want to live in Hua Hin. It just suits me. It feels like home and is my Turtle Beach! How about a special Festivus show on the 23rd! The Airing of Grievances could be epic!😂

I think there must be some financial pressure about putting out more videos? Some vloggers that I used to see creating 1 or 2 a week have doubled or tripled their output. And you're right, a lot of those extra videos seem to be very generic non-insightful fluff. The algorithm must be tightening up as to what pays and what does not. Not an active content creator myself, but there seems to be something pushing this increase in volume.

16:27 Well, as someone who knows a lot about US electrical standards, I was fascinated by Thai wiring practices/standards, especially having built a house in Thailand. I was NOT critical of Thai practices. Many Thai wiring practices make a lot more sense to me than what is mandated in the US. Especially the US obsession regarding putting a box around every junction/wire splice.

Junction boxes are to prevent fire when loose wires create heat and will cause a fire. Yes there’s lots a code on electrical but all is done for good reason and because of what we have learned by our mistakes. Just as the airline industry has learned by plane crash investigations.

@@coryjackson3131 Yes, I understand why junction boxes are mandated in the US. Modern nearly idiot proof connectors like Wago's that are in wide use everywhere in the world except the US, which is still obsessed with wire nuts, makes boxes for connecting things like those modern LED downlights unnecessary. But in the good old US, every cheap LED downlight has to have a dumb junction box attached to it. Many of the electric codes in the US are very old, and apparently impossible to remove. Also, the boxes you see in US residential wiring are cheap thin PVC, not metal, usually. Barely a deterrent to fires from junctions. If you make connections idiot proof with Wago's and stop using wire nuts, I would argue boxes have no impact on safety in many cases.

Avoiding any type of connection being buried in a wall.. wago or not, is a real plus if any electrician is trying to trace any failures in a circuit... just sayin, I think that is part of the logic/ consideration for junction boxes. I much prefer metal boxes, but the claim is that with plastic ones, you won't get arcs or trip circuits when wires are somehow exposed. The plastic boxes that are popular in the U.S. are way too thin and flexible .

@@rickwilson478 I agree all connections/junctions should be accessible. The most common scenario is regarding those cheap LED downlights you see everywhere in Thailand, they are commonly connected without boxes.

No country is perfect, I think the one thing that always amazes me is living in Thailand for 4 years I have never had anything stolen. Can leave my helmet on the bike, all my food shopping 🛍️. Left my keys too, someone gave the keys to the restaurant I was eating. This was in Pattaya area not some out of the way place! It’s partially due to the way Thais are indoctrinated to not take something from someone due to their culture and Buddhism! 🙏

Took me about 4 years, to realise they do steal. Backpack stolen, on a earlier occasion my Thai girlfriend had her phone snatched too from table. Yes it's safer as in violent behaviour and young are taught to respect that carries through to adulthood but Thailand is not void of stealing, stay alert but don't panic it's fairly safe 😉

3 weeks in BKK and must admit I made no effort to try to visit the new mall. i did spend plenty of time in malls, however, because of the weather issue you mentioned. what else is there to do? yep, I need a place on the beach with constant, strong sea breezes like Steve-o.
