His body changed so much by the time he was at Madrid, i reckon he was about 60% of the player he had been and he was still good enough to humiliate great defenders. In his prime he was truly a phenomenon.

There was a goal I believe vs Levante where he outran a defender and still able to round the GK. And even more impressive when the obviously out of shape R9 outran both Cannavaro and Thuram unfortunately his shot was saved by Buffon. He should’ve peaked and prime in 2001-2002 but we all know it never happened.

@@iganpparamarta8813He should not have peaked in 2001/2002 and he didn't. Ronaldo never peaked because he was destroyed by 2 major injuries and was at only 65% and never the same player in 2002. He did never reach his full potential but when he was 100% he had stats that no player ever had on that age and did things on the field other could not do at their peak. He was not only allround but also played on a lot of positions on the field from CVM till CA and from the left middle and right he could make a difference from all those positions.

And like you said was the destroyed version of Ronaldo still the best player of his era who had no problem even with the best defenders Not many people know that Owen was also very good on a young age. He is one of the youngest golden ball winners ever but when he joined Real madrid he did not believe what destroyed Ronaldo could do. And he could not put in his mind how a 100% Ronaldo must have been. Before his major injuries Ronaldo was the best player ever.

‘If he never had those injuries....’ Heard this too many times. His playing style is certainly phenomenal hence his nickname. But all those acceleration, explosiveness, charging defenders head-on were just too much for his body. He might have avoided them if he played ‘slower’ and relying on positioning with occasional dribbling but it’s not il fenomeno that we love isn’t it? He should’ve played in la liga exclusively which is more forgiving for fast dribbling players. He could easily score 1000goals. The ‘lesser’ Ronaldo scored 450 goals in la liga in 9 seasons. Imagine the ‘better’ Ronaldo played in la liga for 9 seasons!! Imagine!

@@iganpparamarta8813 I think his bulking up put too much pressure on his knees, given his playing style. I don't remember the slimmer version of himself having been so prone to injuries.

Some of the dribbles he did in his prime at Inter Milan were simply mindblowing. Fastest dribbler of the ball Ive ever seen. He could do stuff that Messi could not.

Taking the ball with skill,directly going forwards on defenders with unbelievable pace and body balance,full of joga bonito technique , awesome vision and passing to friends and deadly finishing with his signature move (going past goalie).Still not enough to describe R9 El fenomeno. He was always smiling in the pitch except his heartbreaking injuries. The fans who watched him alive loved him and will always do like me. If FIFA ever opens a Soccer Hall Of Fame for the legends of the game, I don’t think Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima deserves to be inducted. He simply hasn’t done enough to prove that he was an exceptional player, he was neither impactful or a game changer.

Watching Ronaldo destroys my heart knowing that this was not even half of what he could have been he had bad luck with his knees he could’ve been the best of all time by far he had it all before he had the enjuries he was light and strong and fast really fast!

Well i wonder why in videos like these (which are good) there are only clips from him at madrid, not before... This will make younger fans think this here was peak ronaldo... Thats not true peak ronaldo was in psv barça and inter from 94 to 99... In madrid he was still awesome of course but before he was all time great material.

Wow, he really used stepovers quite a bit with playing for RMA. Strong and physical forward with skills - you don't see many like him anymore.

He was an alien experiment that went wrong. Giving too much talent without enhancing his physiques. Thank goodness he returned in time and won WC plus golden boot.

Along with the what if he never had those horrible knee injuries question every football fan has pondered, my other big what if question is what if he never had a fit before the '98 WC final. My opinion is he would've destroyed France and lifted the World Cup but that would have ruined what I believe to be the greatest redemption story in football. The complete arc of the boy wonder who failed to win the World Cup and go through years of injury hell only to return and inspire his team to victory four years later.
